Reducing negative environmental impacts to occupants and the surrounding territory is the leading goal of Green Buildings.
There are 7 components needed to be concentrated on to achieve the goals of green building:
- Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
- Water Efficiency
- Environmentally Preferable Building Materials and Specifications
- Waste Reduction
- Toxics Reduction
- Indoor Air Quality
- Smart Growth and Sustainable Development
What is USGBC?
USGBC – The United States Green Building Council helps you understand the need and importance of green building projects. With the help of the Federal Energy Management Program, USGBC launched the first version of LEED in 1998. In LEED Certification there are 2 levels of training which are LEED GA and LEED AP.
USGBC was founded in April 1993 by Mike Italiano, David Gottfried and Rick Fedrizzi. LEED v1.0 was piloted in 1998 and LEED v2.0, released in 2000, was the first version to be widely adopted. The current system is LEED v5, launched on 28 April 2025.
In this article, we will provide you with information on each and help you find accredited LEED training in Dubai.
1. LEED Green Associate (LEED GA):
LEED GA is the first step towards increasing your knowledge of green building and its practices. The LEED examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions and must be completed in 2 hours. To pass the exam you must earn a scaled score of 170 or higher. It can be sat at a Prometric test centre or remotely with online proctoring, and the current specification is always published in the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook. A LEED Green Associate is a professional who thoroughly understands green building principles and practices. There are no eligibility prerequisites.
2. LEED Accredited Professional Specialty (LEED AP BD+C):
After the completion of the LEED GA Exam, You can pursue the LEED AP. LEED AP has multiple specialties available. You can choose the category that suits your designation. Example:
- LEED AP Building Design + Construction (BD+C)
- LEED AP Operations + Maintenance (O+M)
- LEED AP Interior Design + Construction (ID+C)
- LEED AP Homes
- LEED AP Neighborhood Development (ND)
Of these, 3FOLD TRAINING delivers exam preparation for the BD+C specialty, which is the most widely held and the most relevant to design and construction professionals in the region.
The LEED AP professional has advanced knowledge of green building principles and practices. The LEED AP Exam consists of 100 questions with 2 hours to complete the exam. To pass the exam you must earn a scaled score of a minimum of 170 or higher. You must hold an active LEED Green Associate credential when you register, unless you sit the combined LEED GA and LEED AP exam. Full format details are in the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook.
Which LEED version will my exam be based on?
The LEED Green Associate exam is based on LEED v5. The LEED AP BD+C, O+M and ID+C exams are transitioning to v5, while LEED AP Homes and LEED AP ND remain based on LEED v4. Available exam formats can change during a transition, so confirm the current position in the USGBC LEED Candidate Handbooks before you register. All 3FOLD TRAINING course materials are written to v5. Our LEED v5 guide for GA and AP candidates explains the change.
On the project side, LEED v5 becomes the only version available for new registrations from 1 July 2027, and all remaining v4 and v4.1 projects must complete certification by 30 June 2033.
What do the LEED exams cost?
GBCI exam fees are paid to USGBC separately from any training fee, and they are reviewed from time to time. Always check the current fee on the USGBC website before registering.
Does LEED matter in Dubai if Al Sa’fat is mandatory?
Yes, and the two work together rather than competing. Al Sa’fat is Dubai Municipality’s mandatory green building rating system for new construction in the emirate; Abu Dhabi has its own Estidama Pearl Rating System. LEED is voluntary and international, which is why developers, multinational tenants and ESG-reporting owners pursue it alongside local compliance. For a Dubai-based professional that combination is the career argument: local regulatory knowledge plus a globally portable credential.
