The PMP exam is not automatically booked when you finish your 35 hours of project management education. Training makes you eligible to apply, but the exam appointment comes later: PMI must approve your application, you must pay the certification fee and then you choose an available appointment through Pearson VUE.

The present PMP exam contains 180 questions, allows four hours and includes two 10-minute breaks. PMI offers two delivery options: an in-person appointment at a Pearson VUE test centre, which PMI recommends, or a secure online-proctored appointment. The best option is the one that gives you a stable, controlled four-hour testing environment.

The short answer: when and where can you take the PMP exam?

You may submit your PMP application whenever you feel confident that you meet the requirements and that the experience stated in your application is complete and accurate. PMI advises that the application review may take up to five days, so candidates should normally allow approximately five working days to receive the decision.

Once the application is approved, you can make the exam payment. The approval is valid for one year. After payment, PMI issues your eligibility notification and Eligibility ID, allowing you to book your preferred exam date and location through Pearson VUE.

You may take the exam:

• In person at an available Pearson VUE test centre; or
• Online from an approved private location using Pearson VUE’s OnVUE proctoring system.

Your training provider does not decide the appointment, reserve the seat or administer the PMP exam. The appointment is made through your PMI account and completed on Pearson VUE’s scheduling platform.

When are you allowed to schedule the PMP exam?

The normal sequence is straightforward:

• Complete the required project management education.
• Submit your PMP application through PMI.org when you feel confident that your eligibility details are ready.
• Allow approximately five working days for PMI to review the application.
• If selected for audit, complete the audit successfully.
• Receive PMI’s application approval.
• Pay the PMP certification fee.
• Receive your eligibility notification and Eligibility ID.
• Use the scheduling link in your PMI account to choose your preferred date, time and Pearson VUE location.

You do not pay the exam fee while the application is still under review. Payment becomes available after approval. If your application is selected for audit, you must complete the audit successfully before you can proceed to payment and exam scheduling.

How long do you have to take and pass the exam?

Your PMP application approval is valid for one year. During this one-year eligibility period, you must schedule and pass the exam. You may attempt the exam up to three times during that year. A second or third attempt requires payment of the applicable re-examination fee.

If the one-year period expires before you pass, you must submit a new application if you want to continue. If you fail three attempts within the eligibility period, PMI requires you to wait one year from the date of the final attempt before reapplying for the PMP certification.

When should you book your PMP exam?

There is no compulsory waiting period after training. You may apply whenever you feel confident about proceeding with the PMP certification process. After the application is approved and payment is completed, you may select the exam date you prefer from the appointments available in Pearson VUE.

A sensible approach is to choose a target date that gives you enough time to complete the syllabus, review weak areas and sit realistic timed mock exams. Do not keep postponing simply because the approval is valid for one year, but do not select a date that leaves insufficient preparation time.

Choose an appointment time that matches your concentration

The PMP exam is a four-hour assessment before check-in time is added. If you think most clearly in the morning, choose a morning appointment. If you work night shifts or need time to travel, an afternoon appointment may be better. For online testing, also consider when your home is quietest and when your internet connection is most reliable.

Where can you take the PMP exam?

PMI currently offers the PMP exam at Pearson VUE test centres and through Pearson VUE’s OnVUE online-proctored service. Test-centre locations and available seats are shown during scheduling and can change, so use the live Pearson VUE availability shown through your PMI account rather than relying on an old list of centres.

If you select the test-centre option, the booking system will display the available Pearson VUE centres for the location you search. You may compare them and select the centre nearest to your home or workplace. If your preferred date is not available at your first-choice centre, check another nearby test centre before changing the date.

For UAE candidates, search around Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or another convenient emirate. Do not assume that every Pearson VUE centre offers every PMI exam or that the nearest centre will have a PMP seat on your preferred date. Availability differs by centre and is updated in the live booking system.

Should you choose a test centre or the online exam?

Both routes lead to the same PMP certification, but the testing experience is different.

For a high-stakes, four-hour exam, a test centre is often the safer choice. Online testing can still work well, but convenience should not be confused with simplicity: you are responsible for the technology, the room and preventing every interruption.

Example for a PMP test taker in the UAE

Consider a candidate who lives in Dubai. She feels confident that her training, experience and application details are ready, so she submits her PMP application on 1 October 2026. She allows approximately five working days for PMI’s review. Once the application is approved, she makes the exam payment and receives her Eligibility ID. Her approval is valid for one year, but she does not plan to use the whole period.

She prefers to take the exam on a Saturday morning in November. From her PMI dashboard, she selects Schedule Exam, chooses the test-centre option and searches around her area in Dubai. The booking system displays the available test centres. She first checks the centre nearest to her home. If her preferred Saturday is unavailable there, she checks the date at another nearby centre before deciding whether to change her exam date.

After finding the right combination of date and location, she compares the distance, parking and expected traffic before confirming the appointment. For a 9:00 a.m. appointment, she plans to be at the centre before 8:30 a.m., because PMI requires check-in 30 minutes before the scheduled time and late candidates may be refused admission.

If the available centre dates do not suit her, she can consider online testing. Before selecting it, she runs the required system test on the same laptop and internet connection she will use on exam day. She chooses a private room, confirms that nobody will enter and checks that her identification matches the name on her PMI scheduling notification exactly.

How to schedule the PMP exam through PMI

• Submit the application when you feel confident that your eligibility and experience information are ready.
• Allow approximately five working days for application review and check your email for PMI’s decision.
• Once approved, pay the PMP certification fee and receive your Eligibility ID.
• Sign in to your account at PMI.org.
• Open your certification application or exam status in the dashboard.
• Select Schedule Exam. PMI will direct you to Pearson VUE.
• Choose either a test-centre appointment or the online-proctored option.
• Confirm the exam language and review the testing policies.
• For a test-centre exam, review the available centres and select the nearest suitable location.
• Select your preferred date and time. If that date is unavailable at your first-choice centre, check another nearby centre.
• Review every detail before completing the booking.
• Save the confirmation email and add the appointment to your calendar.

If you choose a test centre, use the live availability to verify that the centre administers the PMP exam. If you choose online testing, review the current Pearson VUE OnVUE requirements and run the system test before you book—not only on exam day.

What should you check before exam day?

For both delivery options

• Confirm the exact appointment date, time, time zone and delivery method.
• Make sure your current government-issued photo ID meets the rules and your name matches the scheduling notification exactly.
• Review the current exam-day and security policies.
• Plan for the full exam: 180 questions, four hours and two 10-minute breaks.
• Keep your PMI Eligibility ID and appointment confirmation available.

Additional checks for a test centre

• Check the centre address, building entrance, parking and travel time in advance.
• Plan to check in 30 minutes early. Add extra time for Dubai or Abu Dhabi traffic.
• Bring only permitted items; personal belongings will normally be stored outside the testing room.

Additional checks for an online appointment

• Run the system test on the same computer and network you will use for the exam.
• Avoid a corporate laptop if security controls may block the proctoring software.
• Use a quiet private room and clear the desk and surrounding area.
• Prevent family members, colleagues, pets, calls and notifications from interrupting the session.
• Connect the laptop to power and, where possible, use a reliable wired internet connection.

What if you need to reschedule or cancel?

PMI’s current certification handbook applies the following rules to both centre-based and online-proctored appointments:

• More than 30 days before the appointment: you may reschedule or cancel without the late-change fee.
• Within 30 days: PMI charges US$70 plus applicable taxes to reschedule or cancel.
• Within 48 hours: you cannot reschedule or cancel. If you do not attend, you forfeit the exam fee and must pay the applicable fee to book again.

Make changes through your PMI account, which directs you to the exam-delivery system. An email to PMI or Pearson VUE does not count as a completed cancellation. If you want to switch from online to a test centre, or the reverse, you normally cancel the current appointment and schedule the new delivery method; the same cancellation rules apply.

PMI may consider documented emergencies under its extenuating-circumstances policy, but ordinary work commitments do not qualify. The safest approach is to change the booking as soon as you know you cannot attend.
