You can earn the Certified Cost Professional (CCP) credential from AACE International (AACEI) as a freelancer, independent consultant or small-firm owner. The catch is proof: AACEI asks a third party to confirm your experience, and you have no employer to sign the form. This guide covers the experience rules, the documents to prepare, and what to do when no one can vouch for a given year.
Quick answer
Self-employed professionals qualify for the AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) credential on the same terms as employees: 8 years of industry-related experience, or 4 years plus a 4-year industry-related degree. The difference is proof. AACEI requires third-party verification of experience, and self-employed applicants follow AACEI’s Self-Employment Policy. Applicants should prepare a diploma, verification from clients or former employers showing dates, job title and duties, and supporting contracts and invoices.

What experience and education does the CCP require?
The CCP exam requires either 8 years of industry-related experience, or 4 years of industry-related experience plus a 4-year industry-related college degree. AACEI (AACE International) publishes these rules on its CCP details page. Applicants must also agree to follow AACEI’s Canons of Ethics.
What counts as industry-related experience?
Qualifying experience covers the work areas of Total Cost Management (TCM), AACEI’s framework for managing cost across a project’s life cycle. Examples include cost engineering, cost estimating, cost control, project controls, planning and scheduling, project management, commercial and contracts management, and performance measurement.
Your duties count for more than your job title.
A “consultant” whose daily work is estimating and cost control can still qualify.
| Route | Experience | Education |
|---|---|---|
| Route 1 | 8 years industry-related | None required |
| Route 2 | 4 years industry-related | 4-year industry-related degree |
Do you need AACEI membership or a prep course?
No. AACEI membership is optional, and you do not need to complete a prep course to apply. The exam fee includes application review and is due when you submit the application. The fee is non-refundable.

How does AACEI treat self-employed applicants?
Self-employed applicants qualify on the same terms as employees, but they must follow AACEI’s Self-Employment Policy when verifying experience. The policy replaces the standard employer verification form for self-employed years. Read the current version in AACEI’s application guide before you start, because the policy sets the exact evidence AACEI will accept.
Why is verification harder when you work for yourself?
Experience must be confirmed by a third party, normally an employer stating your employment dates, job title and a description of your duties. As 3FOLD Training’s CCP eligibility guide explains, a CV (curriculum vitae), resume, application, job description, employment contract or offer letter, or another organization’s certification cannot be used as employment verification.
That rule matters most for the self-employed, because the documents you would naturally hand over, such as your own resume or a company profile, are documents AACEI does not accept on their own. You need independent evidence that someone else can vouch for your work.
Which documents do self-employed applicants need?
Every applicant needs proof of education and proof of experience, and self-employed applicants should add independent evidence of their client work. The first three rows below come from AACEI’s published rules. The remaining rows are supporting evidence we suggest you gather, and whether AACEI accepts them depends on its Self-Employment Policy, so confirm that before you rely on them.
| Document | What it proves | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Diploma, degree certificate or official transcript | Education credit for Route 2 | AACEI requirement |
| Official translation, if the original is not in English | Makes the education record readable | AACEI requirement Official translation service only |
| Signed verification of your work from a third party, with dates, title and duties | Experience in a qualifying role | AACEI requirement |
| Client letters confirming your engagement and scope | Independent confirmation of the work | Suggested, check the policy |
| Contracts, purchase orders or statements of work | The dates and scope of each assignment | Suggested, check the policy |
| Invoices and proof of business registration | Continuous, real trading over the years claimed | Suggested, check the policy |
| A year-by-year experience timeline | Shows that 8 years (or 4 with a degree) add up | Suggested |
Keep each document consistent with the others. The dates on your client letters, invoices and timeline should agree, and the duties should match the Total Cost Management areas listed in the eligibility rules.
Can you meet the experience requirement?
Add up the years that a third party can verify, then compare the total with 4 years (with a degree) or 8 years (without one). Use the checker below to test your own timeline.
CCP experience checker
For planning only. AACEI decides eligibility and what evidence it accepts.
About this example: A 4-year industry-related degree lowers the requirement to 4 years. 1 year as an employee plus 3 verifiable self-employed years reaches 4, even though 5 years were self-employed. The checker counts only years that can be verified, and assumes employee years have employer verification.
What if you have no employer to verify your experience?
Earlier years as an employee still count, and self-employed years need a third party who can vouch for them.
Which past employers can verify your work?
For past employers you can no longer reach, AACEI says it will usually accept an employer’s verification of your work history if the employer carried out a background check when it hired you. Ask your former employer’s HR (human resources) team whether that record exists.
AACEI offers a Certification Application Verification Form that your current or past employer can complete to verify your experience. Ask the employer to state your employment dates, job title and duties, and to sign and return the form. You can download the form from the “Do you have a template for verification?” question on AACEI’s certification FAQs page.
Who can verify your self-employed years?
Think about who can credibly confirm your work. Good candidates are:
- Clients or project owners who hired you and can state your role, dates and duties.
- Prime contractors or main consultants you worked under as a subcontractor.
- A senior colleague or partner who reviewed your deliverables, such as estimates, schedules or cost reports.
Ask each person to describe your actual duties in Total Cost Management terms rather than just your title. Send a short draft of the facts to make this easy, and let the verifier edit it so the letter stays in their own words.
What mistakes should you avoid?
Five mistakes weaken a self-employed CCP application.
- Submitting your own resume as proof. AACEI does not accept a CV, resume or job description as verification, so it will not carry the application.
- Describing titles instead of duties. Eligibility follows the work you did, so spell out estimating, cost control, scheduling or contracts tasks.
- Leaving gaps in the timeline. Account for every year you claim, including years between assignments.
- Waiting until the last minute. Client letters take weeks to collect, so request them before you apply.
- Missing the translation rule. A diploma not in English needs an official translation, and AACEI accepts only translations from an official translation service.
Want structure while your documents are collected? The program is self-paced, so you can study around client work.
How should you prepare for the CCP exam?
Plan for 119 multiple-choice questions plus 1 written memo, and a 70% overall score to pass.
How many attempts do you get?
Registration gives you 6 months to take the exam up to 3 times, twice at a reduced fee. Start preparing while your documents are being collected, and use the AACE CCP study plan to structure your weeks.
Do you need to recertify?
Yes. Recertification is every 3 years and requires a minimum of 12 CEUs (continuing education units) from the period, according to AACEI’s certification FAQs. One CEU equals 10 contact hours of organized continuing education.
