What happens if you fail the PMP® exam three times within one year?

PMI allows 3 attempts in 1 year. Fail all three and you wait 1 year from your last exam before you reapply. Here is how the dates, timing and fees work.

Failing the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam once is common, but failing it three times in a year has a specific consequence. PMI (the Project Management Institute) limits you to 3 attempts per eligibility period, so the third result decides whether you keep going or start over. This article settles how the one-year window works, when you can retake, what a retake costs and what to change before your next sitting.

Quick answer

If you fail the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam three times within your one-year eligibility period, PMI (the Project Management Institute) requires you to wait 1 year from the date of your last exam before you reapply. The eligibility period starts when PMI approves your application and does not restart after a failed attempt. Reapplying means a new application, a new approval and a new exam fee. Confirm current rules in the PMI Project Management Professional Examination Handbook.

How long does your PMP exam eligibility period last?

Your eligibility period lasts 1 year, starting when PMI approves your application. It does not start when you book the exam or when you sit it.

PMI’s own PMP page states that you may take the exam up to three times in one year (PMI, Project Management Professional certification). All 3 attempts draw on the same 12 months. A first attempt in month 2 and a third attempt in month 11 sit inside one window.

The clock does not restart when you fail. Attempts you do not use are lost when the year ends. If you want the full picture of how eligibility and the application fit together, read our guide to PMI PMP certification.

What happens if you fail the PMP exam three times?

After a third failed attempt, you must wait 1 year from the date of your last exam before you reapply for the PMP certification.

That rule comes from the PMI Project Management Professional Examination Handbook: after three attempts you wait one year from the date of the last examination, then reapply (PMI PMP Examination Handbook). Reapplying means a new application, a new approval and a new exam fee. You must also meet the eligibility requirements as they stand on that date, including 35 hours of project management education.

Does the wait apply if you use fewer than three attempts?

No. If your one-year eligibility period expires without a pass, you must reapply for the certification. The one-year wait after your last exam belongs to the case where all 3 attempts are used.

Why does this rule matter for your planning?

It turns the third attempt into a deadline. Sitting the exam three times in quick succession does not raise your chances of passing, but it can cost you more than a year. Every attempt should follow a clear change in how you prepare.

What does the eligibility window look like in practice?

A timeline counted in months from approval shows how three attempts, a pass or an expired window each play out. The months below are illustrative and count from the day PMI approves your application.

ScenarioAttempts usedWhat happensEarliest new application
Pass on the second attempt2Fail in month 2, pass in month 4. The credential is awarded. Not needed
Fail all three attempts3Fail in months 2, 5 and 8. No attempts remain, although the window runs to month 12.Month 20, which is 1 year after the last exam
Window closes with attempts unused1Fail in month 10, do not retake, and the window closes in month 12.Reapply after the window has expired

The second row surprises most learners. The one-year wait counts from the date of the last exam, not from the end of the eligibility window. A third failure in month 8 therefore means reapplying in month 20, even though the window itself ended in month 12. Confirm how PMI counts the date in your own case.

The third row is a different rule. Because not all attempts were used, the one-year wait after a third attempt does not apply. The rule that applies is reapplication after the year expires.

When can you take the second and third attempts?

The PMI handbook limits you to 3 attempts in 1 year and states no fixed gap between them, so your practical date is the first slot your PMI account offers after a failed attempt.

Some training sites report a waiting period of 14 days, and others report 30 days. Those figures disagree, and neither comes from the handbook. Do not plan around either number until you have checked your own account.

How do you check your retake date?

Sign in to your PMI account after a failed attempt and open the exam scheduling page. The first date offered is your earliest retake. PMI lets you test at a Pearson VUE test center (PMI’s testing provider) or remotely with online proctoring, so availability in your city also shapes the date. Our guide to when and where to take the PMP exam covers the choice.

How long should you leave between attempts?

Leave several weeks, not days. A retake within days of a fail repeats the same preparation and usually the same result. Your third attempt is the last on this application, so it needs the longest preparation of the three.

PMP retake planner

For planning only. Confirm your dates and fees in your PMI account.

The preloaded example shows 2 failed attempts with 3 months left. One attempt remains, so the next sitting must be your best-prepared one.

Do you pay a fee for each PMP exam retake?

Yes, each retake carries its own fee, paid to PMI when you schedule the exam.

Several training sites report USD 275 per retake for PMI members and USD 375 for non-members. PMI’s handbook describes a retake discount that depends on membership and regional pricing, and fees change, so confirm the amount at checkout. Reapplying after a third failed attempt means paying the full exam fee again.

The fee is a stronger argument for preparation than for speed. Each extra sitting adds cost, and a third failure adds a year before you can apply again. The retake planner above totals the fees for your remaining attempts once you enter the amount PMI shows you.

What should you change before your next attempt?

Change the method first: find your weakest domain, practice with full-length timed mock exams and leave several weeks before the next sitting.

A fail usually means the method needs to change, not just the hours.

  • Diagnose the weak domain. Use your score report to decide where the next study block goes.
  • Practice under exam conditions. The exam has 180 questions, so stamina is part of the test.
  • Review every wrong answer. Understanding why an option fails teaches more than counting your score.
  • Match the current exam content outline. PMI publishes it, and the exam follows it.

The updated PMP exam launched in July 2026 and weights 3 domains: People, Process and Business Environment. The exam content outline gives Business Environment 26 percent, People 33 percent and Process 41 percent (PMI, new PMP exam). Check that your study material matches the current outline, which you can read in the PMP Examination Content Outline.

Should you change trainers or study groups?

Only if the current approach has no feedback loop. Learners who pass after a fail usually add scenario practice and a trainer who explains the reasoning behind each answer, not more reading.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if you fail the PMP exam three times?

If you fail the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam three times within your one-year eligibility period, PMI (the Project Management Institute) requires you to wait 1 year from the date of your last exam before you reapply for the PMP certification.

How many times can you take the PMP exam in one year?

PMI allows up to 3 attempts at the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam within your 1-year eligibility period. The period starts when PMI approves your application.

Does the PMP eligibility period restart after a failed attempt?

No. For the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, the 1-year eligibility period starts at application approval and does not restart after a failed attempt. All 3 attempts must fall inside that single year.

How long do you wait between PMP exam retakes?

The PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) Examination Handbook limits you to 3 attempts in 1 year and states no fixed gap between them. Some training sites report a waiting period of 14 or 30 days, so check your PMI account for the first available retake date before you plan.

Do you pay a fee for each PMP exam retake?

Yes. Each retake of the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) exam carries its own fee, paid to PMI when you schedule. The amount depends on your PMI membership and region, so confirm it in your PMI account.

What if the PMP eligibility year ends before you pass?

If the 1-year eligibility period for the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) exam ends without a pass, unused attempts expire and you must reapply for the certification, including a new exam fee.

Do you need the 35 hours of training again after failing the PMP exam three times?

The PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) certification requires 35 hours of project management training at application. A new application after 3 failed attempts must meet PMI’s requirements as they stand on that date, so confirm with PMI whether earlier training still counts.
