Why LEED exam vocabulary matters

The LEED Green Associate exam is not simply a test of whether you have memorised a list of definitions. USGBC states that the exam measures general knowledge of green building practices and how to support others working on LEED projects. The exam questions reflect both Task Domains and Knowledge Domains.

That means understanding the terminology used in LEED can make it easier to understand what a question is asking. A candidate who knows the difference between a prerequisite and a credit, for example, can interpret a project scenario more accurately than someone who treats the two terms as interchangeable.

The current LEED Green Associate exam is based on LEED v5. USGBC also maintains a dedicated LEED v5 glossary containing terminology applicable to the current commercial LEED v5 rating systems.

Important: Vocabulary should be learned in context. Do not rely only on memorising one-line definitions. Understand what each term means and why it matters within a LEED project.

Terms 1–5: The LEED fundamentals

01

LEED

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a green building rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

Exam use: Understand LEED as a framework for evaluating and recognizing building and project performance.

02

USGBC

The U.S. Green Building Council is the organization that develops and advances LEED and provides resources supporting the rating system.

Exam use: Know the role of USGBC and distinguish it from GBCI.

03

GBCI

Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) administers LEED professional credentialing and project certification activities.

Exam use: Understand which organization administers LEED certification and credentialing functions.

04

Rating System

A LEED rating system provides the structure, requirements and categories used to evaluate a particular type of building or project.

Exam use: Recognize that different project types may use different LEED rating systems.

05

LEED Certification

LEED certification is the process through which a project demonstrates that it has satisfied the applicable LEED requirements and earns recognition at the corresponding certification level.

Exam use: Understand the difference between project certification and an individual’s LEED professional credential.

Terms 6–10: Requirements, credits and project structure

06

Prerequisite

A prerequisite is a mandatory requirement within a LEED rating system. A project must satisfy applicable prerequisites; they are not optional point-earning credits.

Exam use: If a question says a requirement is mandatory, consider whether it is describing a prerequisite.

07

Credit

A credit is an optional LEED requirement for which a project can earn points when the applicable requirements are satisfied.

Exam use: Know the distinction between mandatory prerequisites and optional credits.

08

Minimum Program Requirements (MPRs)

Minimum Program Requirements establish fundamental conditions that a project must meet to be eligible for LEED certification.

Exam use: Do not confuse MPRs with individual prerequisites or credits.

09

Project Boundary

The project boundary defines the limits of the LEED project. USGBC’s LEED v5 glossary describes it as the limits of the LEED project drawn in compliance with the Minimum Program Requirements and consistently applied to every attempted prerequisite and credit.

Exam use: Boundary questions may test what is included within the LEED project.

10

LEED Scorecard

A LEED scorecard is used to organize the prerequisites and credits a project is pursuing and to track the potential points associated with those selections.

Exam use: Understand how project teams can use a scorecard when planning certification strategies.

13

Embodied Carbon

Embodied carbon refers to greenhouse gas emissions associated with materials and products across relevant stages of their life cycle, including impacts associated with producing and using building materials.

Exam use: Connect material-selection questions with life-cycle and carbon impacts.

14

Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Life-cycle assessment evaluates environmental impacts associated with a product, material, building or system across defined stages of its life cycle.

Exam use: Recognize when a question is asking you to consider impacts beyond the construction stage.

15

Water Efficiency

Water efficiency focuses on reducing unnecessary water use and improving the performance of water-related systems and strategies.

Exam use: Connect indoor, outdoor and process-water strategies with water-performance objectives.

Terms 16–20: Site, indoor environment and transportation

16

Heat Island Effect

The heat island effect describes the tendency of developed areas to become warmer than surrounding less-developed areas because of surfaces and conditions that absorb and retain solar heat.

Exam use: Questions may connect site and roof strategies with reducing heat-island impacts.

17

Stormwater

Stormwater is water from precipitation that flows over or through developed surfaces. LEED addresses strategies for managing rainfall and reducing negative impacts on site and watershed conditions.

Exam use: Identify strategies intended to manage rainfall and site water impacts.

18

Solar Reflectance Index (SRI)

The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) is a calculated value that combines solar reflectance and thermal emittance. USGBC’s LEED v5 glossary notes that SRI is expressed on a scale from 0 to 100.

Exam use: Understand how roof and paving material properties relate to solar heat and surface temperature.

19

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ)

Indoor Environmental Quality covers conditions inside buildings that affect occupants, including areas such as indoor air quality, lighting, thermal conditions, acoustics and other indoor-environment considerations.

Exam use: Identify the IEQ category when a question focuses on occupant conditions inside a building.

20

Alternative Transportation

Alternative transportation refers to transportation options that provide alternatives to single-occupancy vehicle travel, supporting transportation efficiency and reduced environmental impacts.

Exam use: Connect transportation strategies with location, access and mobility objectives.

Terms 21–25: Certification and exam vocabulary

21

Integrative Process

An integrative process brings relevant project disciplines and information together early in planning and design so that teams can identify interactions and make more informed decisions.

Exam use: Look for questions involving early collaboration, systems thinking and cross-disciplinary decision-making.

22

LEED Green Associate

The LEED Green Associate is a foundational professional credential demonstrating documented, up-to-date understanding of green building principles and practices.

Exam use: Understand the credential’s foundational role and its relationship to advanced LEED credentials.

23

LEED AP with Specialty

A LEED AP with Specialty is an advanced LEED professional credential associated with a specific specialty, such as Building Design and Construction, Operations and Maintenance, or Interior Design and Construction.

Exam use: Distinguish an advanced specialty credential from the foundational Green Associate credential.

24

Reference Guide

A LEED reference guide provides detailed guidance for a particular LEED rating system. For LEED v5, USGBC provides digital reference guides through its LEED resources and credit library.

Exam use: Know the difference between an exam reference document and a general study resource.

25

Knowledge Domain

A Knowledge Domain represents an area of knowledge associated with LEED rating-system categories. USGBC states that LEED Green Associate exam questions reflect both Task Domains and Knowledge Domains.

Exam use: Use the knowledge domains to organise your revision and identify content areas that require more practice.

How LEED vocabulary appears in exam questions

Knowing a definition is useful, but the real value comes from being able to recognize the term when it appears in a question.

A question might describe a project situation without using the exact phrase from your study material. You may need to identify the concept from the description.

If the question describes…Think about…
A mandatory requirement that must be satisfiedPrerequisite
Optional requirements that can contribute pointsCredit
The limits of the project being certifiedProject boundary
Basic eligibility conditions for certificationMinimum Program Requirements
Early collaboration between project disciplinesIntegrative Process
Impacts associated with building materials and productsEmbodied carbon / Life-cycle assessment
Indoor air, lighting, thermal comfort or acousticsIndoor Environmental Quality
Rainfall flowing across developed surfacesStormwater
A value combining solar reflectance and thermal emittanceSolar Reflectance Index
The knowledge area represented by an exam content categoryKnowledge Domain

Exam tip: When you see an important LEED term in a question, do not immediately choose the answer containing the same word. First understand what the term means in the context of the question.

How to study LEED terminology effectively

A vocabulary list becomes much more useful when you turn each term into a practical concept rather than memorising a dictionary definition.

  • Write the term in your own words.
  • Learn what problem or objective the term relates to.
  • Connect the term to its relevant LEED category or process.
  • Practise identifying the term from a scenario.
  • Compare similar terms that are easy to confuse.
  • Use practice questions to test whether you can apply the concept.
  • Review mistakes rather than simply counting your correct answers.

Do not confuse similar LEED terms

Some vocabulary pairs are particularly important because they can sound similar or appear together in questions.
