Many candidates for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE)® exam plan to sit it from home, because the American Society for Quality (ASQ) offers remote proctoring. The catch is that remote testing is not available everywhere, and candidates often find this out late. This guide settles how to check your country before you build leave, travel or study plans around a remote exam.
Quick answer
The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) exam from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) can be taken through Prometric ProProctor remote proctoring in some locations, but ASQ states that live remote proctoring is currently not available in China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan. Candidates in those countries must test at a Prometric test center. Eligibility for the exam does not make a candidate eligible to test remotely from any country, so candidates should check their testing options before planning.
| Awarding body | American Society for Quality (ASQ) |
| Test delivery partner | Prometric |
| Testing options | Prometric test center, or Prometric ProProctor remote proctoring where available |
| No live remote proctoring (per ASQ) | China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan |
| Where candidates in those countries test | At a Prometric test center |
| Country selection | Chosen on the application; ASQ states it cannot be changed afterward |
| Test center check-in | 30 minutes before the appointment |
| Remote testing needs | A stable internet connection and a system check before scheduling |
Can you take the CMQ/OE exam remotely from any country?
No. Remote proctoring exists for the CMQ/OE exam, but ASQ states that it is not currently available in every country.
ASQ offers 2 ways to take the computer-based exam: at a Prometric test center, or from home with Prometric ProProctor. The second option depends on your country and on current arrangements between ASQ and Prometric. Do not assume that remote testing is open to you because a colleague or a friend sat the exam from home. Being eligible to take the CMQ/OE exam is a separate question from being eligible to take it remotely.
Which assumptions cause problems?
- “A colleague took it from home, so I can.” Remote availability depends on the country where each candidate tests, not on the exam alone.
- “The exam is computer-based, so it must be remote.” Computer-based means the exam is taken on a computer. It can happen at a Prometric test center or at home, depending on where you are.
- “I will sort out the location later.” Your country is selected on the application, and ASQ states that it cannot be changed afterward. Choose it with your real testing location in mind.
Which countries does ASQ list as having no live remote proctoring?
ASQ currently lists China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan.
| Country | Live remote proctoring | Where you test |
|---|---|---|
| United Arab Emirates | Not currently available | Prometric test center |
| Saudi Arabia | Not currently available | Prometric test center |
| Qatar | Not currently available | Prometric test center |
| China | Not currently available | Prometric test center |
| Pakistan | Not currently available | Prometric test center |
This list comes from the ASQ computer-based testing page, checked on 5 Oct 2026. ASQ words it as “currently”, so treat it as a position that can change, and read the page again before you plan. If your country is not on the list, remote testing may be available to you, but you should still confirm it for your own application.
Not sure which option applies to you? Ask about CMQ/OE exam options and training on the course page.
When do you find out which testing options apply to you?
The surest way is to check before you apply, because the country you select on your ASQ application matters.
ASQ states that the country selected on the application cannot be changed after you apply. In our experience, candidates often notice the remote testing restriction only when they reach the application or scheduling stage, which is late if plans are already made. You can avoid that by reading the ASQ page first, then confirming the options shown during your application and in Prometric ProScheduler when you book. Our guide to how to schedule your CMQ/OE exam walks through the booking steps.
Why does this matter for your leave, travel and study plans?
If remote testing is not available to you, your exam day involves a test center, and that changes how you plan.
- Leave from work. A test center appointment means a fixed slot away from home, so book your leave around it.
- Travel and accommodation. Test centers are in set locations, so some candidates travel to reach one.
- Limited choice later. Appointments are booked by other candidates, and your preferred date, time or location can disappear. Our article on CMQ/OE exam dates and scheduling explains why checking early helps.
- Arrival time. At a test center, ASQ advises arriving 30 minutes before your appointment for check-in.
Candidates who work full time feel this most. A remote exam can fit around a work schedule, while a test center asks for a half day or a full day, plus travel time. Decide which one you can manage before you pick your testing window, not after.
Changing an appointment can also carry fees, which our guide to ASQ refunds, rescheduling and cancellations explains.

What if remote proctoring is available in your country?
Then you can test from home, but you must prepare your connection and your room before the exam.
ASQ states that a stable internet connection is extremely important and recommends a system readiness check before you schedule and again near your exam date. A wired connection is recommended where possible. If you fail to launch or complete the exam because of connectivity problems on your side, ASQ states that a reschedule fee applies. How do you check your testing options before you plan?
You check 4 things, in this order, before you commit to leave, travel or a study schedule.
- Read the ASQ list. Check the current countries on the ASQ computer-based testing page.
- Select your country carefully. Choose the country where you will actually test, because it cannot be changed after you apply.
- Watch your application and eligibility email. Confirm the testing options presented for your application.
- Check Prometric when you schedule. Compare test center dates and, where allowed, remote dates, then book early.
CMQ/OE testing option checker
For planning only. ASQ and Prometric decide which options are available to you.
The preloaded example is a candidate in the United Arab Emirates who planned to test from home. ASQ lists that country as having no live remote proctoring, so the tool recommends switching the plan to a test center.
