What is new in Leadership and strategy?
Leadership and strategy now name governance, ethics and technology risk directly, which means you need to recognize them as exam topics, not background reading.
Domain I: Leadership (28 questions)
- A new subsection titled Business Governance, Ethics, and Compliance.
- Engagement, confidentiality and hybrid work structures now appear as named topics.
Domain II: Strategic Plan Development & Deployment (23 questions)
- PESTLE analysis (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) joins the strategic analysis tools.
- Artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity appear as technology topics. Comparisons of the two versions report that machine learning is no longer named separately.
What is new in management elements and quality tools?
Management Elements & Methods lost 5 questions while Quality Management Tools gained 1 and added several named problem-solving methods.
Domain III: Management Elements & Methods (26 questions)
- Emotional intelligence and virtual or hybrid team communication are new.
- Comparisons of the two versions report that named performance excellence models, such as Baldrige and the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) model, no longer appear as listed topics. Check the official 2026 BoK before you drop them from your notes.
Domain IV: Quality Management Tools (31 questions)
- New named tools: SIPOC (Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers), 8D (Eight Disciplines), CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Action), A3 problem solving, Is/Is Not analysis and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).
- Process reliability concepts are added. Kepner-Tregoe is reported as removed.
The titles stayed the same. The topics under them are what you will be tested on.
What changed in customer, supply chain and training?
These three domains changed least in size, but each gained a more specific expectation that is easy to miss if you study from 2019 notes.
- Domain V: Customer-Focused Organizations (22 questions). More emphasis on analyzing customer and contractual requirements.
- Domain VI: Supply Chain Management (19 questions). Supplier risk, supply chain resilience and evaluating supplier exit strategies are expanded, and the domain gains 2 questions.
- Domain VII: Training & Development (16 questions). Skill matrices are added to training needs analysis. The question count is unchanged.
How do you study the new topics?
Study in proportion to question count and your own weak spots, because a domain with 31 questions and low confidence costs more marks than a domain with 16 questions and high confidence.
Start with Quality Management Tools and Supply Chain Management if your notes predate 2026, since both gained named topics and questions. Then check every Leadership and Strategic Plan item against the official 2026 CMQ/OE Body of Knowledge from ASQ. CMQ/OE study-hours planner
For planning only. Hours are split by 2026 question count and your confidence in each domain.
The preloaded example is a learner with 60 hours who is strong in Leadership and Training & Development but weak in Supply Chain Management. Quality Management Tools and Management Elements & Methods get the most hours because they carry many questions and low confidence, and Supply Chain Management comes next.
Which version of the CMQ/OE BoK are you tested on?
You are tested on the 2026 version if your exam is in the July 2026 window or later, since ASQ made it effective 1 Jul 2026.
Before you apply, confirm the eligibility rules on the official ASQ CMQ/OE page. The exam needs 10 years of on-the-job experience, with at least 5 years in a position that can define, execute or control projects or processes. A technical diploma waives 1 year, an associate degree 2 years, a bachelor’s degree 4 years and a master’s or doctorate 5 years. Our ASQ certifications page lists the other ASQ credentials we prepare for, such as the Six Sigma Black Belt. If your work is quality systems rather than management, see our Six Sigma Green Belt and ISO 9001 Lead Auditor programs.
