What Prior Knowledge Does the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Course Assume?

The ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course has no prerequisites. It does assume two things: an understanding of information security management principles and the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, and knowledge of ISO/IEC 27001 with ISO/IEC 27002 and the terms in ISO/IEC 27000. Recommended, not required — but the course will not teach them to you.

What prior knowledge does the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor specification list?

PR373 sets the prior knowledge out in two parts, and it is short enough to give in full.

Part one, management systems and information security management. An understanding of the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, and knowledge of nine listed information security management principles and concepts:

  • awareness of the need for information security;
  • the assignment of responsibility for it;
  • incorporating management commitment and the interests of stakeholders;
  • enhancing societal values;
  • using the results of risk assessments to determine appropriate controls to reach acceptable levels of risk;
  • incorporating security as an essential element of information networks and systems;
  • the active prevention and detection of information security incidents;
  • ensuring a comprehensive approach; and
  • continual reassessment with modification as appropriate.

Part two, the standard itself. Knowledge of the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001 with ISO/IEC 27002, and the commonly used information security management terms and definitions given in ISO/IEC 27000. The specification adds that this “may be gained by” completing the Foundation course FD134 “or equivalent”.

That is the whole list. There is nothing about experience, qualifications, job role or technical background in it.

ISO/IEC 27000 has been revised: which edition should you read?

Worth knowing before you go looking for a copy. ISO/IEC 27000:2018 has been withdrawn and replaced by ISO/IEC 27000:2026. The title changed with it — the standard is now “Overview” rather than “Overview and vocabulary” — and its terms clause has been cut back to the terms that the new document itself uses.

Read the 2026 edition, because it is the one in force and it is where the standard’s account of ISMS concepts and relationships now sits. But do not expect it to be the glossary the 2018 edition was.For the vocabulary itself, note that ISO/IEC 27000:2026 has changed its role and no longer serves primarily as a terminology document. PR373 nevertheless still specifies knowledge of commonly used information security management terms and definitions as given in ISO/IEC 27000, so follow the terminology and study guidance applicable to the current course. If your reading list came from a page written before the change, check which edition it points you at. What you actually need has not changed — asset, threat, vulnerability, risk, control, residual risk, risk owner, used the way the standards use them.

What about the “four years of experience” you have read elsewhere?

Those figures — four years in IT, two in information security, a number of completed audits, sometimes a degree — are not in PR373 and are not prerequisites for anything you attend. They come from certification criteria applied to an application made after a course, or from a different body’s credential altogether. Who is eligible for the course separates the two properly.

Is ISO 27001 Lead Auditor prior knowledge required, or only recommended?

Read the wording rather than the summary of it. The specification’s own words are “recommend”, “assumes”, “designed for learners who have” the knowledge, and “expected prior knowledge”. The words prerequisite, entry requirement and required do not appear anywhere in it in connection with prior knowledge.

There is a catch, and it is the part the summaries miss. Nothing here gates the learner, but it does bind the provider: an Approved Training Partner has to verify and record that learners have the recommended prior knowledge before the course starts, and hold documented evidence that it does so. In practice that usually means a questionnaire or a short assessment before the course opens, so expect to be asked about your background rather than waved through.

Why will the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course not simply teach it?

Because the certified course is designed on the assumption that learners already have that prior knowledge. A certified Lead Auditor course may include some coverage of the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001 — but only enough to let learners refresh what they already know.The certified course is designed on the assumption that learners already have that prior knowledge, so it is not intended to provide the full foundation that should be acquired before the course.

That rule is the reason the course spends its time on audit technique rather than on the standard. It is also why arriving without the prior knowledge is expensive: nobody will stop, and the exam will not make allowances.

The examination follows the same logic. It assumes you have the prior knowledge. Its questions can relate to any requirement of ISO/IEC 27001 and to the expected prior knowledge, not only to what the course itself covered — a line in the specification that is easy to read past.

How do you know whether you have the prior knowledge?

Ask yourself six questions. They are not a test anybody administers; they are the things the course will assume from the first morning.

  • Can you say what Clauses 4 to 10 of ISO/IEC 27001 require, without looking them up first?
  • Do you know what a Statement of Applicability is, what goes in it, and which clause produces it?
  • Can you explain the difference between a threat, a vulnerability, a risk and a control, and say how the size of a risk is arrived at?
  • Do you know that Annex A holds 93 controls in four themes, and that it is a reference set rather than a checklist?
  • Can you describe what residual risk is and who accepts it?
  • Could you place the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle onto the clause structure of the standard?

If most of those are comfortable, the course will land where it is meant to. If several are not, the gap is real and it is worth closing before you book rather than discovering it on the first morning.

How to use it: Tick every question you could answer comfortably today. Your result appears below.

Not a test anybody administers: these are the things the course assumes from the first morning. Tick only what you could do comfortably today.

What the prior knowledge is not

Two misreadings are common enough to be worth naming. The first is that the list describes a level of expertise. It does not — it describes familiarity. You are not expected to have implemented an ISMS, or to know the standard by heart, or to be able to recite control numbers. You are expected to be able to follow a discussion that uses the vocabulary of the standard without having to stop and ask what a term means.

The second is that the prior knowledge is somehow a proxy for how the qualification is awarded. It is not. Meeting it does not entitle you to anything, and neither does the course: passing it satisfies the training requirement, and certification is decided later, by CQI and IRCA, on an application of its own. Prior knowledge is about being able to follow the course, and nothing more.

How do you close the prior knowledge gap?

The specification names one route, a Foundation course, and then opens the door with “or equivalent” without defining what that means. Most candidates arrive by the other two routes below. Whether what you have is enough is a judgement your provider has to be able to record.

  • A Foundation course, FD134. The route the specification names by name. It is a knowledge course rather than a step on the auditor route, so it is worth the time only where the gap is wide — Foundation or Lead Auditor sets out when that is and when it is not.
  • Work with the standard itself. Having implemented an ISMS, run one, or audited one internally. No period is defined anywhere, so the conversation with a provider is about substance rather than duration.
  • Reading the standard properly. Not skimming it — working through Clauses 4 to 10 and the four Annex A themes until you can place a requirement without hunting. This is the cheapest route and the one that needs the most discipline.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course prerequisites

What are the prerequisites for the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course?

There are none in the formal sense. The specification lists recommended prior knowledge — information security management principles, the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, and the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001 with ISO/IEC 27002 and the terms in ISO/IEC 27000.

Can the CQI IRCA ISO 27001 Lead Auditor exam ask about the course prior knowledge?

Yes. The specification states that examination questions can relate to any requirement of ISO/IEC 27001 and to the expected prior knowledge, not only to what the course covered.

How long should I allow to close the prior knowledge gap before the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course?

It depends where you are starting. Someone refreshing knowledge they used a year ago may need an evening with the standard. Someone meeting Clauses 4 to 10 for the first time should think in weeks, or take the Foundation course, rather than trying to absorb it in the days before training starts.

Do I need ISO/IEC 27002 as well as ISO/IEC 27001 for the Lead Auditor course?

The prior knowledge is written as ISO/IEC 27001 with ISO/IEC 27002, so a working familiarity with the implementation guidance is assumed. Annex A of ISO/IEC 27001 provides the reference set of controls; ISO/IEC 27002 provides guidance on those controls and their implementation. .

Where to go next: more on the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course

If the six questions above went well, the full route to certification shows what follows the course and what the certification actually asks of you. If you are coming to this from outside technology, whether you need an IT background deals with the other worry that usually travels with it.
