What AACEI does and does not say about study time, and a planner that turns your own weekly hours into a plan for each domain.
AACEI Approved Education Provider · Licensed by KHDA (Knowledge and Human Development Authority), Dubai
Many candidates ask how many hours a week they need. The answer is personal, because AACE International (AACEI) does not publish a recommended figure. This guide explains what AACEI does say. Then it shows you how to work out your own number.
Quick answer
AACE International (AACEI) does not publish a recommended number of study hours for the Certified Cost Professional (CCP) exam. Therefore, the best figure is the one that you can keep. Count your weeks, count the hours that you can protect, and split the total across the six domains. Then adjust after each mock exam. The planner below does the sums.

What does AACEI say about study time?
We found no recommended study time in the CCP material from AACEI. The official CCP details page describes the exam, the eligibility rules and the pass mark, but it gives no hours. Figures from other sources vary, so we do not quote them.
What AACEI does say
The exam has 119 multiple-choice and compound scenario questions across 6 domains, plus a memo. Also, AACEI says that you have six months from the clearance email to book your exam. Therefore, your exam date can shape your weekly plan.
What decides your weekly hours?
Your own situation decides the number. The table below lists five factors and a question for each. However, the table is our suggestion and not an AACEI statement.
| Factor | Why it matters | Question to ask yourself |
|---|---|---|
| Your experience | A candidate who works with costs daily may need less time on familiar topics | Which domains do I use at work? |
| Your exam date | A near date means more hours each week | How many weeks do I have? |
| Your weekly capacity | Hours you cannot protect will not happen | Which evenings and weekends are really free? |
| Your study style | Video lessons, reading and practice take different amounts of time | How do I learn best? |
| Your mock exam results | They show where extra time pays off | Which domain scored lowest? |

How do you work out your own number?
Use a simple four-step method. It starts with your calendar and ends with your mock exam results. Our CCP study plan guide shows how to lay out the weeks.
Step 1: count your weeks
Pick a target exam date. Then count the weeks between today and that date. Remember that AACEI gives you six months from the clearance email to book.
Step 2: count hours you can protect
List the weekday evenings and weekend slots that are really free. Be careful here, because a plan built on hours that you cannot keep will fail. Instead, choose a smaller number that you can repeat every week.
Step 3: split the total across the domains
Multiply your weekly hours by your weeks to get a total. Then split it using the blueprint weightings. For example, Managing Project Costs carries 36%, so it receives about 36% of your hours. Our guide to the three small domains covers the smallest ones.
Step 4: review after a mock exam
Take a mock exam and review your results by domain. Then move hours towards the weak domains. Also, repeat this check every few weeks.
Protect the hours you can keep.
Can you plan your hours now?
Enter the hours you can protect on weekdays and weekend days. Then add the weeks until your exam. The planner shows your weekly total and a split by domain.
Weekly study time planner
For planning only. Enter the hours you can protect and the weeks you have. The planner then shows your weekly and total hours, and splits the total by blueprint weighting.
About this example: the numbers only show how the planner works. They are not a recommended amount of study time.
Want to check your progress? The program includes 3 full-length mock exams.
What if the numbers look too small?
A small total is not a failure. However, it tells you to adjust something. You have two main levers, which are your weekly hours and your exam date.
Raise your weekly hours
Look for one more session each week. For example, use a lunch break for video lessons. Also, keep long blocks for mock exams.
Move your exam date
If your hours are fixed, give yourself more weeks. Our guide to the 72-hour rescheduling rule explains the rules for changing a booking. A fee can apply.
Use the course to save planning time
In addition, our CCP exam preparation program includes 40 on-demand video lessons, a complete CCP study guide, 3 full-length mock exams, a memo writing guide and a formula sheet and glossary. Our CCP mock exam guide explains how to use the mock exams.
