CCP Mock Exam Results: How to Find Weak Areas
How to split a mock exam score by domain, find the reason behind each miss and turn the results into a revision plan.

A mock exam gives you a score, but the score alone does not tell you what to study next. The useful part is the breakdown by domain and by cause. This guide shows how to split your results. Then it helps you turn them into a revision plan.
Quick answer
A mock exam total hides weak areas, so split your score by domain and rank the percentages from lowest to highest. AACE International (AACEI) says that 70% is the pass mark as an overall average across 7 domains, and we found no separate domain pass mark. Therefore, 70% in each domain is only our working target. Then log why you missed each question, and plan your next study block. The finder below ranks your domains.
Mock exam results at a glance
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Awarding body | AACE International (AACEI) |
| Credential | Certified Cost Professional (CCP) |
| Mock exams in our program | 3 full-length mock exams |
| Question domains | 6, plus a memo for Communication |
| Pass rule | An overall average score of 70% across 7 domains |
| Separate pass mark per domain | None found in the AACEI material |
| Result type | Pass or fail only |
Why does a total score hide weak areas?
A single percentage mixes strong and weak domains together. For example, a high score in Managing Project Costs can cover a low score in Create Reports and Documentation. Therefore, the total can look healthy while one domain needs work.
What AACEI says about the pass mark
AACEI says that the final result is an overall average across 7 domains, with 70% needed to pass. Also, we found no separate pass mark for each domain in the AACEI material. As a result, 70% in each domain is only our working target, and it is not an AACEI rule. See the official CCP details page for the exam rules.
How do you break down your results?
Follow four steps after every mock exam. However, the benefit comes from doing them after every mock exam.
Step 1: tag every question by domain
If your mock exam report does not show domain scores, tag each question yourself. Use the six domain names from the blueprint. Then count the correct answers in each domain.
Step 2: convert each domain to a percentage
Divide the correct answers by the questions in that domain. Then list the six percentages from lowest to highest. The lowest one is your first review target.
Step 3: log the cause of each miss
Write down why you missed each question. The table in the next section gives five common causes. Also, note whether the miss was a one-off or a repeat.
Step 4: plan your next study block
Match the causes to actions. For example, a knowledge gap needs reading, while a calculation slip needs practice. Our CCP mock exam guide shows how to use mock exams in your plan.

Why did you miss each question?
The topic is only half of the story. Therefore, the table below separates five causes and gives an action for each. However, these causes and actions are our suggestions and not AACEI statements.
| Cause of a miss | What it looks like | What to do (our suggestion) |
|---|---|---|
| Knowledge gap | You did not know the concept | Return to the study guide and video lessons |
| Calculation slip | You knew the method but made an error | Redo the sum with the formula sheet beside you |
| Misread question | You answered a different question | Underline what the question asks before you answer |
| Term mix-up | You confused two similar terms | Compare the terms side by side in the glossary |
| Lucky or unlucky guess | You guessed and it landed either way | Treat it as a gap and revisit the topic |
A calculation slip needs different practice from a knowledge gap. Also, a misread question needs a change of habit, not more study. Our guide to the onscreen formula sheet helps with the calculation slips.
Fix the cause, not only the topic.
Can you find your weak domains now?
Enter your percentage for each domain. Then the finder ranks them from lowest to highest and flags those below 70%.
Weak-area finder
For planning only. Enter your percentage score for each domain from a mock exam. The finder then ranks the domains from lowest to highest.
About this example: the scores are made up to show how the finder works. Replace them with your own.
Want help with the memo? The program includes a memo writing guide.
How do you turn results into a plan?
Give the lowest domains the first study blocks. However, keep time for the large domains, because they carry most of the questions. Our guide to the CCP exam domains study order explains the weightings.
Set your hours
Next, decide how many hours you can protect each week. Our guide to CCP exam study time helps you work out your own number.
Space your three mock exams
One option is to take the first mock exam early, the second in the middle of your plan and the third near the end. Then compare the domain scores each time. This spacing is our suggestion.
Use the course
In addition, our CCP exam preparation program includes 40 on-demand video lessons, a complete CCP study guide, 3 full-length mock exams, a memo writing guide and a formula sheet and glossary. Our CCP memo format guide explains the layout for the memo.
FAQ: mock exam results
About your results
How do you find weak areas from a AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) mock exam?
Score each domain separately, then rank the scores from lowest to highest. Review the lowest domain first, and ask why you missed each question.
What score should you aim for in a AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) mock exam?
AACE International (AACEI) says that 70% is the pass mark, as an overall average across 7 domains. Therefore, many candidates use 70% as a working target in each domain. This is our suggestion, not an AACEI rule, and a mock score does not predict your result.
How many mock exams should you take before the AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) exam?
Our CCP exam preparation program includes 3 full-length mock exams. One option is to take one early, one in the middle and one near the end. This is our suggestion.
Why do you miss questions on topics you know?
Common causes are a calculation slip, a misread question or a mix-up between similar terms. Therefore, log the cause of every miss, and not only the topic.
About your next steps
Should you retake the same mock exam?
Wait until you have studied your weak domains. However, you may remember answers, so a repeat score can look better than your real level. Use new questions where you can.
How do you review the memo after a mock exam for the AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) exam?
AACE International (AACEI) assesses communication through a memo. Our program includes a memo writing guide, and our memo format guide explains the layout. Compare your memo with that guidance, and note what to improve.
How soon should you review a mock exam?
Review it within a day or two, while you still remember the questions. Then recheck the weak domains after a week of study. This is our suggestion.
Can a mock exam predict your AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) result?
No. A mock exam shows your current level in each domain. However, AACE International (AACEI) results are pass or fail only, and no mock score can confirm the outcome.
