What does first certification mean?
It does not mean your first renewal. The table counts the different AACEI certifications that you hold, such as a CCP and a PSP. If the CCP is your only certification, you pay the first row. AACEI does not state which of your certifications counts as the first.
Fees follow certifications, not renewals
AACEI says that fees apply per certification currently held, not per recertification cycle. Therefore, the amount does not rise each time that you renew. Also, you must submit a separate application for each active certification. Our guide to the CCP recertification fee compares the CEU route with the exam route.

What does the fee cover?
AACEI says that the fee includes its professional review and processing. However, it does not cover the cost of earning your CEUs. Also, AACEI staff do not offer preliminary reviews of an application or of possible CEUs.
The cost of earning CEUs
Some activities cost money and some do not. For example, AACEI sells online learning modules that are worth 0.10 CEU each, but it states no cost for them on the pages that we reviewed. In contrast, AACEI’s FAQs list volunteering as a no-cost way to earn CEUs. Our guide to CCP recertification and CEUs explains the CEU rules.
When do you pay?
You pay when you submit the application online. AACEI says that you can submit once you meet the minimum CEUs and are within six months of your end date. You can start an application and log activities from the day that you became certified. Our guide to what to do after you pass the CCP exam explains the first steps of your certification period.
The steps in AACEI’s guide
First, log in to your AACE profile and open the CEU application. Then add each activity, review the application and add it to your cart. Finally, enter your payment details and click Pay Now. AACEI processes applications in the order that it receives them.
What if your application is denied?
Common routes to a denial
If you do not provide the required documentation, AACEI treats it as an automatic denial. Also, AACEI may select your application at random for an audit. If it does not approve your CEUs as submitted, it notifies you, and you can correct them or add more.
The grace period
A denial results in the expiry of your certification. AACEI then places it in a 6-month grace period. However, AACEI says that the grace period is not designed for earning extra CEUs.
How can you earn the 12 CEUs?
AACEI groups CEU activities into four categories. You need 12 CEUs over the three-year period, with at least one full CEU in at least two categories. The table shows examples from AACEI’s handbook. However, it is not the full list, so check the recertification handbook for every value.
| Category | Maximum CEUs | Examples of AACEI’s values |
|---|---|---|
| A: Performed | 6 | Industry employment: 2 CEUs per year |
| B: Professional Development | 10 | Professional development hours: 0.10 CEU per hour; online learning course: 0.10 CEU each |
| C: Industry Contribution | 10 | Published paper: 2 CEUs; authored book: 4 CEUs |
| D: Volunteer Service | 10 | Committee chair: 2 CEUs per year; mentoring: 1 CEU per mentee |
Category A shows how the values work. AACEI gives 2 CEUs for each year of industry employment, up to the category maximum of 6. Also, the AACEI CEU page lists the four categories.
Can you tally your CEUs?
Enter your years of employment, your professional development hours and your online learning courses. Then the tally shows how far you are from 12.
CEU tally for categories A and B
For planning only. Enter your industry years and professional development. The tally then uses AACEI’s published values for these two categories only.
About this example: the numbers only show how the tally works. Categories C and D can add more CEUs.
