The LEED Green Associate exam is 100 multiple-choice questions in a two-hour appointment, and you need a scaled score of 170 to pass. The 15 practice questions below are written to the same style and spread as the real exam, with a worked explanation for every answer. Attempt each one before you look.
Practice questions are the single most useful thing you can do while preparing. Candidates who pass consistently give the same advice: work through questions repeatedly and study the ones you get wrong, rather than reading a guide cover to cover. Reading builds recognition. Questions build recall, and recall is what the exam tests.
What the exam actually tests
The LEED Green Associate exam is built around eight knowledge domains, each mapped to a LEED v5 credit category. USGBC publishes how many questions come from each, which tells you exactly where to spend your study time:
| Knowledge domain | Questions | Share of the exam |
|---|---|---|
| LEED Process | 15 | The joint largest |
| Energy and Atmosphere | 15 | The joint largest |
| Materials and Resources | 11 | |
| Indoor Environmental Quality | 11 | |
| Water Efficiency | 10 | |
| Location and Transportation | 9 | |
| Sustainable Sites | 8 | |
| Integrative Process, Planning and Assessments | 6 | The smallest |
Two things follow from that table. First, LEED Process and Energy and Atmosphere together are 30 questions — almost a third of the exam. Neglect either and you will struggle. Second, Integrative Process is only six questions, so there is a limit to how much time it deserves.
The exam also contains unscored questions mixed randomly among the scored ones, and you are not told which is which. Treat every question as if it counts.

How to use these questions
- Attempt the question before reading the answer. Guessing and then reading is worth far less than committing to an answer first.
- When you get one wrong, do not just note the right answer — work out why you found the wrong one attractive. That is the gap that will cost you marks.
- Come back to the same questions a week later. If you still get them right, the knowledge has stuck.

How did you do?
There is no official pass mark for a 15-question set, but a useful rule of thumb: if you scored 12 or above and could explain why each answer was right, you are in reasonable shape. Below 10 and you have gaps worth closing before you spend money on an exam registration. Your emailed results will walk through exactly where those gaps are. The most useful next step either way is to work domain by domain rather than at random.
Practice by knowledge domain
These four domains account for 52 of the 100 questions on the exam. Each set below goes deeper than the mixed questions above:

Frequently asked questions
Are these real LEED exam questions?
No. Reproducing real exam questions breaches the agreement every candidate signs with GBCI. These are original questions written to the published exam specification, which is the only legitimate way to practise.
Which LEED version is the exam based on?
LEED v5. Confirm the current position for your exam in the USGBC LEED Candidate Handbooks before you register.
How many questions do I need to get right to pass?
The exam is scored on a scaled score, not a raw percentage, and you need 170 to pass. Because scaling adjusts for difficulty, there is no fixed number of correct answers that guarantees a pass.
How many practice questions should I do before booking?
There is no magic number, but candidates who pass first time typically work through several hundred and revisit the ones they got wrong. Consistency matters more than volume.
