How to Maintain Your LEED Green Associate Credential

August 26, 2026 Posted by 3FOLD LEED, LEED GA No comments

How to Maintain Your LEED Green Associate Credential

15 continuing education hours every two years, of which at least 3 must be LEED-specific. The other 12 can be general green building education or more LEED-specific hours. You self-report them through your Credentials account, no pre-approval is needed, and a renewal fee applies. Miss it and the credential lapses — and an expired credential must be re-earned by sitting the exam again.

The requirement, precisely

Cycle lengthTwo years
Total CE hoursMinimum 15
Must be LEED-specific3
The remaining 12General green building education, or more LEED-specific hours if you prefer
Pre-approvalActivities do not require pre-approval, but LEED-specific education courses must be GBCI-approved and designated as LEED-specific.
How to reportLog into your Credentials account and select Report CE Hours

For comparison, a LEED AP with specialty reports 30 hours per cycle, 6 of them LEED-specific in that specialty. If you hold more than one AP specialty, renewal is charged once rather than per credential.

What counts as a CE hour

Four activity types qualify, and the second one surprises almost everybody.

Education coursesGeneral CE hours can come from GBCI-approved or eligible non-GBCI-approved green building education; LEED-specific education must be GBCI-approved and designated as LEED-specific Unlimited
Working on a LEED project1 CE hour per credit, on a registered or certified LEED projectUnlimited
Authoring3 CE hours per published article, 10 per published book—
Volunteering1 CE hour per hour of participationNo more than 50% of your total hours

Read the second row again. If you actively participate in a registered or certified LEED project, you can earn 1 CE hour per credit worked on, with no limit on the number of project-participation entries.  For a great many credential holders that means the requirement is substantially met by doing the job they already have — and almost nobody knows it, because it is rarely mentioned outside USGBC’s own guidance.

The volunteering cap is worth noting too: it can cover no more than half your total, so a Green Associate cannot report more than 7.5 volunteering hours against a 15-hour requirement.

The renewal fee

A fee applies at renewal, and it depends on when you renew: renewing early costs less than renewing on time, which costs less than renewing late. Organising yourself a few months ahead is worth real money for no extra effort.

Current amounts are on our LEED certification cost page, which is the single place we keep fee figures so there is only ever one page to check.

What happens if you miss the date

There is a 12-month grace period after your renewal date, which exists to let you finish earning and reporting hours. Use it if you need it.

What you must not do is let it run out. Once a credential expires it must be re-earned by sitting the exam again — the full fee, the full preparation, from the beginning. It is comfortably the most expensive way to get this wrong, and it happens to people who were three hours short and stopped opening the emails.

An expired credential also cannot be displayed. Credential logos are available to active holders only, and the credential should come off your signature, your CV and your LinkedIn profile the moment it lapses — see how to put it on your CV and LinkedIn.

Keep your documentation

This is the part people discover at the wrong moment. GBCI reviews a percentage of credential holders at regular intervals, and reserves the right to do so at any time. If you are selected, you need evidence of the hours you reported.

Keep documentation for the current and the previous reporting period. In practice that means a folder — digital is fine — with course certificates, confirmation emails, and a note of the project and credits for any project-based hours. Five minutes at the time; an unpleasant scramble if you leave it.

A system that takes ten minutes a year

  1. Put your renewal date in your calendar now, with a reminder six months before it. That reminder is the whole system.
  2. Report hours as you earn them, not in a batch at the end. Reporting takes a minute and reconstructing a year of attendance takes an afternoon.
  3. Get the 3 LEED-specific hours out of the way first. They are the constrained part; the other 12 are easy to fill.
  4. Save every certificate into one folder as it arrives.
  5. If you work on LEED projects, log the credits you contributed to. That is the cheapest source of hours available to you and it needs recording at the time.

Most of the 15 hours can be earned at no cost — see how to earn LEED CE hours for free.

Why the requirement exists

It is worth a moment, because it changes how the obligation feels. A credential nobody has to maintain is a credential that means nothing five years after the exam — and in this field five years is a version change. LEED v5 rewrote enough of the rating system that a 2019 credential holder who stopped learning would now be wrong about specific things.

The continuing education requirement is what keeps the letters after your name attached to current knowledge. That is also why an employer or client can treat the credential as meaningful.

Thinking about LEED AP next?

Your Green Associate must be active to register for a LEED AP with specialty exam.  Two consequences: a lapsed credential has to be dealt with before you can move up, and the continuing education you are already doing is part of the cost of getting there.

The LEED AP with specialty requirement is 30 CE hours per cycle, including 6 LEED-specific hours in the specialty relevant to the credential. — see what a LEED Accredited Professional is.

Frequently asked questions

How many CE hours does a LEED Green Associate need?
A minimum of 15 continuing education hours every two years, of which at least 3 must be LEED-specific. The remaining 12 can be general green building education or further LEED-specific hours.

Do CE activities need to be approved in advance?
No. Activities do not require pre-approval; they need only meet the eligibility criteria. Hours are self-reported through your Credentials account.

Does working on a LEED project count towards CE hours?
Yes. Participation in a registered or certified LEED project earns 1 CE hour per credit, with no cap on the number of hours earned this way.

What happens if my LEED credential expires?
There is a 12-month grace period after your renewal date. If the credential expires beyond that, it must be re-earned by sitting the exam again.

Will anyone check my reported hours?
Possibly. GBCI reviews a percentage of credential holders at regular intervals and may do so at any time, so keep documentation for the current and previous reporting periods.
