How Often Do You Need to Renew AACE CCP Certification?
Every three years. Your CCP stays active for a three-year term, and AACE International gives you two ways to keep it: collect 12 continuing education units (CEUs) during that term, or sit and pass the exam again before it expires.
The short version: a CCP is valid for three years, and the clock starts on the day you become certified. Before that date runs out, you either prove continuing competence through activities worth 12 CEUs, or you pass the exam a second time.
The renewal rules and fees below come from the AACE Certification Institute Recertification Handbook, revised February 2026. Rules and fees can change, so check the current version before you submit.
How often does a CCP need renewing?
Once every three years. AACE treats each three-year term as your certification evaluation period, and only activities that fall inside it can be counted. You can open a recertification application on the first day of the term and log activities as they happen.
The same three-year rule covers CCP, CEP, CFCC, DRMP, EVP, PSP and PRMP. Two credentials sit outside it: CCT and CST cannot be renewed at all.
What are the two ways to renew?
You choose one route for each renewal. The handbook positions the exam route for anyone who is still certified but hasn't built up enough CEUs.

Pay attention to the single-attempt rule. If you fail a recertification exam, there is no second go inside that cycle, so preparation matters as much as it did the first time.

How do CEUs work for CCP renewal?
One CEU equals ten contact hours, and a contact hour is sixty minutes of instruction or presentation. You need at least 12 CEUs across the three years, with at least one full CEU in at least two different categories. Each category also has a ceiling.

Category A tops out at 6, which means a full-time job alone covers exactly half of what you need. The other six have to come from somewhere else. One catch on Category B: a new credential earns 3 CEUs, but the one you are renewing does not count, and neither do renewals with other bodies or certificates of completion.
What does renewal look like in real life?
Aisha, cost controller in Abu Dhabi — the CEU route
Aisha has worked full-time in project controls throughout her three-year term, so Category A gives her 6. She logs 30 hours of structured training (3.0), attends four local section meetings (1.0) and presents a paper at a technical meeting for the first time (2.0). That's 12 CEUs across three categories. As an AACE member, she pays US$295.
Daniel, freelance estimator — the exam route
Daniel is self-employed, which earns him 6 in Category A, but he never recorded any training. Four months before expiry he holds half the CEUs he needs. He picks recertification by examination and pays the non-member fee of US$690. Because he gets one attempt, he treats it like a first sitting and studies properly.
Priya, planning lead — two credentials
Priya holds both CCP and PSP. She files a separate application for each, although details copy across once the first is complete. As a member, her fees are US$295 for the first certification and US$100 for the second.

Recertifying a CCP by exam costs US$525 for members and US$690 for non-members. All recertification fees are non-refundable, and paying does not guarantee approval.

An unrenewed CCP automatically moves into a six-month grace period. That window is a courtesy for finishing and submitting your application, not extra time to earn CEUs. Activities dated after your three-year term won't be accepted.
If you still haven't recertified when the grace period ends, the credential is decertified immediately. The handbook's FAQ does say extensions may be possible in extenuating circumstances, handled case by case through recertification@aacei.org, so contact AACE early rather than hoping for one.
What if your application is audited?
Applications are picked for audit at random. If yours is chosen, you must upload evidence for every CEU you claimed, with no exceptions. Failing to provide it means automatic denial. Even without an audit, staff can ask for proof, and they do not pre-review applications. Keep certificates, attendance records and employer letters in one folder from the first day of your term.
