What is the CCT, and what is the CCP?

CCT (Certified Cost Technician) is AACE's technician-level certification. Per the handbook's own framing, CCT serves as a broader, more general credential covering the fundamentals of cost engineering, positioned for professionals earlier in their careers.

CCP® (Certified Cost Professional) is AACE's flagship professional-level certification. The handbook describes CCP as an encompassing umbrella across the full scope of cost engineering and Total Cost Management, demonstrating advanced knowledge in planning, executing, and managing project costs, plus the ability to communicate that analysis clearly to stakeholders.

The recertification difference is worth sitting with: per the handbook, technician-level certifications like CCT are not eligible for recertification at all, while CCP holders must actively maintain their credential every three years through CEUs or a repeat exam. Do you need the CCT before the CCP?

No. CCT and CCP have separate, independent eligibility paths. If you already meet the CCP experience requirement, you can apply directly for CCP without ever sitting the CCT exam. CCT exists as an accessible option for professionals who are not yet eligible for CCP, not as a mandatory prerequisite for those who already are.

Which AACE certification should you pursue?

If you already have eight years of relevant industry experience (or four years plus a four-year related degree), CCP is very likely the certification worth pursuing directly. It is AACE's broadest professional-level credential, it is the one most consistently recognised as a career-long benchmark across construction, oil and gas, EPC, and infrastructure hiring, and unlike CCT, it comes with an ongoing recertification cycle that keeps the credential meaningful over time.

CCT remains a sensible option if you are earlier in your career and do not yet meet CCP's experience threshold, or if you want a lower-commitment way to validate foundational cost-engineering knowledge first. But if CCP is within reach for you now, working toward it directly, rather than treating CCT as a required first step, is usually the more efficient path.
