How to Check Your PMP Exam Application Status
You submitted your PMP® application and now you are waiting. Here is where to look, which emails the Project Management Institute (PMI®) sends, and what to do at each stage.
In this guide
After you click submit on a PMP® application, the silence can feel long. You want to know whether PMI has accepted it, whether an audit is coming, and when you can pay and book your exam. This guide settles where to look, what each email means, and what you can do while you wait.
Quick answer
You check your PMP® application status by signing in to your PMI.org account and opening your mypmi.org dashboard, where PMI shows your audit package if your application is selected. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) also notifies you by email: an audit notice before you pay the certification fee, and an email with your PMI Eligibility ID once the fee is received. PMI does not publish a list of status labels, so those emails are the most reliable signals.
| Awarding body | Project Management Institute (PMI®) |
| Where to check | Your PMI.org account and mypmi.org dashboard, plus your email inbox |
| Audit selection | Random; only a percentage of applications are selected |
| Audit notice | By email, before you pay the certification fee |
| Audit documents | 90 days to submit |
| Audit review | About 5 to 7 business days |
| After approval | Pay the certification fee, then receive your PMI Eligibility ID by email |
| Eligibility period | 1 year, with 3 attempts at the exam |
Where do you check your PMP application status?
You check it in your PMI.org account, and you watch the email address linked to that account. PMI’s Certification Handbook says audit packages are available from your mypmi.org dashboard, which is also where you manage your certification activity.
PMI does not publish a list of status names for the PMP® application, so this guide describes stages by what PMI does and what it emails you, not by on-screen labels. If your dashboard shows a different word from the ones you expect, the stage table below still tells you what to do next.
Your PMI account and your inbox tell you the same story, so check both.
What are the stages after you submit your PMP application?
There are five stages between submitting the application and sitting the exam, and PMI marks the key ones by email.
| Stage | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Submitted | Your online application is with PMI. All applications are subject to audit. | Watch your inbox, including spam |
| 2. Audit notice (only if selected) | PMI emails you before you pay the certification fee | Upload all documents within 90 days |
| 3. Audit review | PMI checks your documents against your application | Wait about 5 to 7 business days |
| 4. Approved, fee due | Your application is approved and the certification fee is due | Pay the certification fee |
| 5. Eligibility ID issued | PMI emails your PMI Eligibility ID after payment | Schedule your exam within 1 year |
If you are not selected for audit, stage 2 and stage 3 do not apply to you. For the full audit rules, read our guide to the PMP exam application audit, and for the form itself see how to apply for the PMP exam.

How long does each stage take?
The only review time PMI states in its Certification Handbook is for the audit, which should take about 5 to 7 business days once you submit the requested documents.
PMI allows 90 days to submit audit documents, so your own speed decides how long that stage lasts. The handbook does not state a standard review time for applications that are not audited, so this guide does not promise one. If you want to avoid delays, make your entries accurate the first time, using our guides on PMP project descriptions and which projects count as PMP experience.
Find your stage
For planning only. It shows the usual next step, not a PMI decision.
The preloaded example is an applicant who has submitted the application but has no audit email and no Eligibility ID yet. The tool places them at stage 1, tells them to keep watching their inbox, and reminds them not to book an exam until the Eligibility ID arrives.
What if your PMP application seems stuck?
Start with your own side, then contact PMI. Most delays come from a missed email or from audit documents that are not uploaded yet.
- Search your inbox and spam folder for emails from PMI, because the audit notice arrives by email.
- Open your mypmi.org dashboard and look for an audit package waiting for your documents.
- Count the days since the audit notice, because PMI allows 90 days to submit documents.
- Check that every requested document is uploaded, not only some of them.
- If nothing explains the wait, contact the PMI Customer Care Service Center in your region, as the handbook directs.
Keep your question short and include the email address on your PMI account. If you trained with 3FOLD, send us your question through the course enquiry form and the team can guide you on the application steps.
What happens once your PMP application is approved?
Once your application is approved, you have 1 year to take the exam, and you pay the certification fee to receive your PMI Eligibility ID.
PMI sends the PMI Eligibility ID by email after the certification fee is received, and you use it to schedule your exam appointment. Within the 1-year eligibility period you may take the exam 3 times. Our guide on how many attempts you get to pass the PMP exam explains what happens if you need more than one. Fees depend on your membership and region, so see the PMP exam fees and PMI membership cost guide before you pay.
Because the 1-year clock starts once you are approved, plan when to submit your application after training before you click submit.
PMI publishes the official rules in its PMI Certification Handbook and on its PMP certification page.
