What is the PMP audit for?
The audit exists to verify that you meet the requirements you declared, before you become eligible for the exam. PMI checks three claims: your formal education, your project management experience, and the 35 contact hours of project management education.
It is not a test of your knowledge. It compares what you declared in your application with the documents you provide.
What are the grounds for a PMP audit?
PMI states that all applications are subject to audit, but only a percentage are selected, and that selection is random. PMI does not publish any other trigger, so an audit is not a sign that something is wrong with your application.
One point is easy to miss. PMI reserves the right to select any candidate at any time, including after the certification has been awarded. If a certified person then fails to meet the audit requirements, PMI states they are not entitled to a refund. Every PMP® holder should therefore keep their evidence, not only applicants.
All PMI applicants must also follow the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. Where PMI finds a violation, its actions are not limited to score invalidation or revocation of the certification, so accuracy matters more than speed.

What requirements does PMI check in the audit?

How do you prove the 35 contact hours?
You must show evidence that you completed 35 contact hours of project management education. Which document you use depends on how you trained.

Route 1: You trained through a PMI Authorized Training Partner
If you completed the applicable PMP® training through a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP) and completed the required Knowledge Check, PMI may issue a PMI Certificate of Achievement through the PMI learning experience. PMI recognizes it as evidence of the required education, and it may be auto-populated in your application. Where it is already there, you do not need to attach the training institution’s certificate for the same course.
Do you need to pass the Knowledge Check?
No. Per PMI’s communication to Authorized Training Partners, learners must complete the Knowledge Check at the end of the applicable ATP course to receive a course completion record and generate their certificate of completion in PMI’s new learning management system (LMS). A passing score is no longer required, and learners may retake the Knowledge Check as many times as needed.
Complete it carefully all the same. PMI may use course completion records, including Knowledge Checks, to verify training during certification application audits.
Before submitting, confirm that your PMI learning activities are complete and that the Certificate of Achievement appears in your application.
Route 2: The PMI certificate is not in your application
If your training did not go through the ATP learning process, or the PMI certificate is not available, provide your training certificate. PMI compares it with what you typed, so each detail must agree.

Keep your training records either way. They are your backup if PMI raises a question, even when the PMI certificate is already in your application.
