If you have spent your career on plan-driven projects, the word “agile” on an exam outline can feel like a different language. For a working professional giving up evenings to prepare, the real worry is simple: how much of the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam will test something you have never practiced? This guide settles how much of the exam is agile, why it matters, and what to do about it.

Quick answer

About 60% of the 2026 Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI®) reflects adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches, and about 40% reflects the predictive approach, as set out in the 2026 Exam Content Outline (ECO). Applied to 180 questions, 60% is about 108 questions. PMI describes the split as approximate and does not publish an exact count for each approach.

How much of the PMP exam is agile?

About 60% of the exam involves agile or hybrid approaches, and about 40% involves predictive approaches.

ApproachShare of the examWhat it means for you
PredictiveApproximately 40%Plan-driven projects with defined scope, schedule and cost
Adaptive/agile and hybridApproximately 60%Iterative delivery, frequent feedback, or a mix of both approaches

These questions are not collected in one section. They appear inside the People, Process and Business Environment domains, so agile thinking affects your answers everywhere. Our guides to the 2026 PMP exam domain weighting and to whether the new PMP exam is harder explain the wider changes.

Why does the exam test agile and hybrid so heavily?

The exam tests agile and hybrid heavily because the work of a project professional now often involves more than one way of delivering.

Few real projects follow one method from start to finish. A software team may work in short cycles while the program around it still reports against a fixed budget and milestones. A construction or engineering project may keep a predictive backbone and use agile methods for design or digital work. The exam reflects that reality by asking what a project professional should do in a described situation, not only which definition is correct.

For you, the practical point is that agile is no longer a specialist topic to learn at the end. With about 60% of the exam involving it, a gap here can cost more than a gap in any single knowledge area.

How is agile different from the predictive approach?

Predictive projects plan most of the work up front and control change, while agile projects plan in short cycles and expect change.

Which agile topics should you know for the PMP exam?

Know the agile mindset first, then the common frameworks and terms that scenarios use.

  • The agile mindset. The four values and 12 principles of the Agile Manifesto, which explain why agile teams favor collaboration, working results and responding to change.
  • Servant leadership. Leading by supporting the team, removing obstacles and encouraging self-organization.
  • Scrum. The Product Owner, Scrum Master and Developers; the Sprint, planning, daily meeting, review and retrospective; and the product backlog.
  • Kanban. Visualizing work on a board and limiting work in progress.
  • Common terms. Backlog refinement, user stories, velocity, definition of done and minimum viable product (MVP).
  • Hybrid thinking. When to combine predictive planning with iterative delivery, and why.

You do not need to memorize every term in isolation. You do need to recognize them quickly inside a scenario and know what a good response looks like.

Approach selector: predictive, agile or hybrid?

For practice only. This shows how scenario signals point to an approach. It is not PMI guidance and does not reproduce exam questions.

The preloaded example is a project with evolving requirements, frequent customer feedback and delivery in small increments. All three signals favor short cycles and adaptation, so the selector points to an agile approach. Mixed signals point to hybrid.

Why do professionals new to agile find these questions hard?

Professionals new to agile find these questions hard because the best answer often favors collaboration and team ownership over control, which reverses habits built in plan-driven work.

What mindset shifts matter most?

  • From directing to serving. In agile scenarios, the project manager supports the team and removes obstacles instead of assigning every task.
  • From controlling change to welcoming it. Changing requirements are expected, and a prioritized backlog absorbs them.
  • From late review to early feedback. Waiting for the end to show the customer is rarely the best answer in an agile scenario.
  • From one method to the right method. In hybrid scenarios, the skill is choosing practices that fit, not defending a single approach.
On agile questions, the best answer usually trusts the team and talks to the customer before it reaches for a control.

Does experience in another approach count against you?

No. Predictive experience still earns marks on roughly 40% of the exam and gives you real judgment about risk, cost and stakeholders. The goal is to add agile thinking, not to replace what you know.

How should you prepare if you have no agile experience?

Learn the mindset before the frameworks, then practice recognizing the approach in each scenario.

  • Start with the Agile Manifesto values and principles, and servant leadership.
  • Learn Scrum and Kanban in plain words until you can explain each to a colleague.
  • Study hybrid cases: which parts of a project suit a fixed plan and which suit short cycles.
  • Practice scenario questions, and read why each wrong option is wrong.
  • Give agile and hybrid at least the weight the exam gives them, which is about 60% of your attention if you are new to it.

How do you approach an agile scenario question?

Ask yourself which approach the project uses, who owns the decision, what feedback is missing and which action best supports the team and the intended outcome. Our guides on how to avoid PMP exam failures and the top 10 study resources for PMP exam preparation give more habits to build, and the PMP course modules for 2026 show what a structured course covers. PMI publishes the official details in the 2026 PMP Exam Content Outline and on its PMP certification page.

Frequently asked questions

How much of the PMP exam is agile in 2026?

About 60% of the 2026 Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI) reflects adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches, and about 40% reflects the predictive approach. PMI describes the split as approximate in the Exam Content Outline.

Do you need agile experience to pass the PMP exam?

No. The Project Management Institute (PMI) does not require agile work experience to sit the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, but about 60% of the exam involves agile or hybrid approaches, so candidates without agile experience should study these topics carefully.

Is Scrum enough to prepare for the agile questions on the PMP exam?

Scrum is a good starting point, but the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI) covers adaptive/agile and hybrid approaches more broadly. Learn the agile mindset, Kanban and hybrid thinking as well as Scrum.

What is a hybrid approach on the PMP exam?

A hybrid approach combines predictive and agile practices on the same project. On the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI), hybrid scenarios test whether a candidate can choose practices that fit the situation.

Are agile questions harder if you come from a plan-driven background?

They often feel less familiar, because the best answer on the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI) usually favors collaboration, team ownership and frequent feedback over strict control. Practicing scenario questions helps build that habit.

Does the PMP exam ask about the Agile Manifesto?

The four values and 12 principles of the Agile Manifesto are the foundation of agile thinking, so knowing them helps candidates judge which answer fits an agile scenario on the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI).

Are agile questions in a separate section of the PMP exam?

No. Agile and hybrid questions appear across the People, Process and Business Environment domains of the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI), so they are not collected in one separate section.

How much time should you spend on agile topics for the PMP exam?

The Project Management Institute (PMI) does not publish study hours for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam. Because about 60% of the exam involves agile or hybrid approaches, candidates new to agile should give these topics at least that share of their attention.
