Many professionals ask how to become a LEED AP once they have worked on a project or finished the Green Associate. The route has a clear shape: choose a specialty, prepare with the official materials, register, pass the exam and keep the credential current. This article walks through each step using the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook and the USGBC LEED v5 exam information page. It does not state fees, dates, passing scores or question numbers, so follow the official USGBC and GBCI pages for those details.

Quick answer

To become a LEED AP, you earn the LEED Accredited Professional credential in a specialty by passing the matching exam. USGBC lists BD+C, O+M and ID+C on LEED v5, and ND and Homes on LEED v4. USGBC states that Green Associate holders are qualified to take the LEED AP with Specialty exam. Prepare with the candidate handbook and the listed references, register through the official channels, pass the exam and then keep the credential current with continuing education. Always check the current official pages.

What does LEED AP mean?

LEED AP stands for LEED Accredited Professional, a credential held by a person.

Buildings and projects are certified under LEED, while people hold credentials. A LEED AP holds a credential in one specialty, which shows tested knowledge of the LEED rating system for that kind of project. A training certificate from a course is not a credential, and our guide on the difference between a LEED training certificate and a credential explains why. If you are still comparing routes, read how to become a LEED professional for the wider picture. The table below summarizes six points candidates ask about most.

Which LEED AP specialties are there?

The USGBC LEED v5 exam information page lists five LEED AP with Specialty exams.

  • LEED AP BD+C (Building Design and Construction): for teams that design and build projects, on LEED v5.
  • LEED AP O+M (Operations and Maintenance): for teams that run existing buildings, on LEED v5.
  • LEED AP ID+C (Interior Design and Construction): for teams that fit out interior spaces, on LEED v5.
  • LEED AP ND (Neighborhood Development): on LEED v4.
  • LEED AP Homes: on LEED v4.

Pick the specialty that matches your daily work. When this article was written, the page said the LEED AP with Specialty exams were in beta testing, so check the page for the current status. Our guide to the LEED AP BD+C syllabus shows what the BD+C exam covers.

What are the steps to become a LEED AP?

The route has six steps, and each one points to an official source.

  • Choose your specialty, based on the projects you work on.
  • Check the requirements on the USGBC credential pages. USGBC states that Green Associate holders are qualified to take the LEED AP with Specialty exam, and this article does not state other eligibility rules.
  • Download the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook and the references listed on the USGBC LEED v5 exam information page.
  • Prepare using the handbook domains as your checklist, and practise with questions.
  • Register through the official channels. Our guide on how to register for the LEED Green Associate exam shows how registration works in practice, and the Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) site has the current details.
  • Sit the exam, which Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) administers, and then maintain the credential.

Our guide on LEED certification for professionals explains how the credential fits a working career.

How do you prepare for the exam?

Use the official handbook as the base, then add practice.

  • List the eight knowledge domains from the handbook and tick each one as you finish it.
  • Read the references USGBC lists, and note where the Reference Guide explains credit requirements.
  • Practise with scenario questions, because the exam assesses Application and Analysis as well as Recall.
  • Take full-length mock exams to find weak domains before you register.
  • Compare self-study and a course using our guide to LEED training course versus self-study.

On the 3FOLD Training course pages, the LEED AP BD+C course runs 21 hours and the combined LEED Green Associate and LEED AP BD+C path runs 35 hours. The courses are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams. A course helps organize the content and does not replace the official handbook. Our guide on the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP BD+C career path shows the wider route.

How do you keep the credential?

The credential is maintained through continuing education on two-year cycles.

The USGBC support page describes 30 hours of continuing education for a LEED AP, including 6 LEED-specific hours, on a two-year cycle. Requirements can change, so check the support page before you plan. Our guide on how LEED recertification works explains the process in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

What does LEED AP stand for?

LEED AP stands for LEED Accredited Professional. It is a professional credential awarded in a specialty, and USGBC lists the specialties on its credential pages. Confirm the current list there.

How do you become a LEED AP?

In outline, you choose a specialty, check the requirements on the USGBC and GBCI pages, prepare with the candidate handbook and the listed references, register through the official channels, pass the exam and then maintain the credential. Follow the current official pages for each step.

Which LEED AP specialties are there?

The USGBC exam information page lists LEED AP BD+C, O+M and ID+C on LEED v5, while LEED AP ND and LEED AP Homes remain on LEED v4. Check the page for the current status of each exam.

Do you need the Green Associate before the LEED AP exam?

USGBC states that candidates who earned the Green Associate credential, on v4 or v5, are qualified to take the LEED AP with Specialty exam. This article does not state other eligibility rules, so check the USGBC credential pages before you choose a route.

Which LEED AP specialty should you choose?

Choose the specialty that matches your work. BD+C suits teams that design and build projects, O+M suits teams that run existing buildings, and ID+C suits teams that fit out interiors. The 3FOLD Training course pages cover BD+C.

Can you work on LEED projects without being a LEED AP?

Industry guides report that no credential is formally required to work on a LEED project. A credential shows tested knowledge, and the project team still follows the rating system requirements. Check the USGBC and GBCI pages for current rules.

Is the LEED AP exam final on LEED v5?

When this article was written, the USGBC exam information page said the LEED AP with Specialty exams were in beta testing, with the final v5 version still to come. Check the page for the current status before you plan your exam date.

What does the LEED AP exam cover?

The handbook lists eight knowledge domains: LEED Process, Integrative Process, Planning, and Assessments, Location and Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Confirm them in the current handbook.

How do you keep the LEED AP credential?

The USGBC support page describes continuing education on two-year cycles, with 30 hours for a LEED AP, including 6 LEED-specific hours. Check the support page for the current requirements.

Does a course make you a LEED AP?

No. A course prepares you for the exam, and the credential is earned by passing the exam administered through GBCI. A training certificate is not a credential.

How long is the 3FOLD Training LEED AP BD+C course?

On the 3FOLD Training course page, the LEED AP BD+C course runs 21 hours, delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams. The combined path with the Green Associate runs 35 hours.
