PMP® exam at a test center or online? How to choose and what to expect on exam day
Both options are valid and the exam is the same. Here is what PMI and Pearson VUE require, which setting suits you, and how to avoid the mistakes that cost candidates their appointment.
In this guide
You have passed the application, paid the fee and now PMI asks one more question when you schedule: test center or online? Candidates often pick based on convenience, then discover the rules on exam day. This guide explains what the Project Management Institute (PMI) and its exam provider, Pearson VUE, require for each option, so you can choose with your eyes open.
Quick answer
The Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam can be taken in person at a Pearson VUE test center or securely online, and the exam itself is the same: 180 questions in 240 minutes. PMI’s PMP page lists the test center as its recommended option. Choose the test center if your home internet, space or computer cannot meet Pearson VUE’s online rules. Choose online only if you can pass the system test and guarantee a private room.
| Delivery options | Pearson VUE test center, or online proctored |

Can you take the PMP exam online or at a test center?
Yes, you can do either, and you choose when you schedule your appointment.
PMI’s PMP page says you can take your exam in person at a Pearson VUE testing center (recommended) or securely online. Pearson VUE runs both. The content, the number of questions and the time limit do not change with the setting. What changes is who watches you, what you must remove from your surroundings and what can go wrong with your equipment. Candidates in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) can also read our guide on when and where to take the PMP exam before they book.

What is the difference between the test center and online exam?
The test center controls the room for you, while online testing makes you responsible for the room and the technology.
| Question | Test center | Online proctored |
|---|---|---|
| Where you sit | A Pearson VUE test center | A private room you set up yourself |
| Equipment | Provided by the center | Your own computer, webcam and network |
| Your belongings | Stored in a locker; you keep only your ID and locker key | Desk and arm’s reach cleared of items |
| Check-in | 30 minutes early, with ID checks | 30 minutes early: technology checks, photos of you and your ID, 360° room scan |
| Main risk | Travel time and arriving late | Internet, software or room rule problems |
| Support if something fails | Test center staff on site | In-exam chat with a proctor, who cannot troubleshoot your device or network |
What do you need for the online PMP exam?
You need a compliant computer, a stable connection and a completely empty, private room.
Technology
- Internet. At least 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload. Pearson VUE recommends a wired connection over Wi-Fi.
- Computer. Windows 11 or 10 (64-bit, not S Mode) or macOS 14 or later. Chromebooks and Linux are not supported.
- Webcam and audio. A working webcam, microphone and speakers. Headsets and headphones are not allowed unless your exam sponsor approves them.
- One screen only. Multiple monitors and touch screens are not allowed.
- No VPN or proxy, and a personal computer is recommended over a company laptop with a firewall.
Room and desk
- Empty desk. Only the computer, approved items and a drink in an unmarked container. Remove books, notes, paper, pens, food and your phone from arm’s reach.
- Alone and quiet. No one else may be in the room or see your screen. Bathrooms and public spaces are not allowed.
- Phone. You can use it for check-in, then it must be out of reach and out of view.
- Camera view. Do not leave it unless the exam confirms an approved break. Violations can mean your exam is revoked and your fee forfeited.
Run Pearson VUE’s system test on the same computer, network and room you will use, ideally before you schedule. The full OnVUE requirements and technical specifications are on the Pearson VUE site.

What happens at a Pearson VUE test center?
You check in 30 minutes early, store your belongings and sit the exam on a center computer.
According to the PMI Certification Handbook, you may keep only your government ID and locker key on you. Everything else goes in a locker. The center provides scratch paper and two pencils, or two marker boards, and the exam software has a built-in calculator, with handheld calculators available on request. You cannot eat or drink in the testing room, take scrap paper out or bring unauthorized notes. If you leave for an unscheduled break you need permission, and you will go through security checks when you return.
For many candidates the trade-off is simple: you give up some convenience, travel and plan your arrival, and in return you avoid the technology risk. PMI lists this as the recommended option.
Test center or online? A quick venue check
For planning only. Tap the sentence that sounds most like you. This is guidance, not a PMI decision.
Which describes you best?
Test center
Online proctoring needs at least 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, and a dropped connection can disrupt a 240-minute exam. A test center removes that risk. Pearson VUE also advises avoiding company firewalls and VPNs.
Test center
You must remain alone and the room must stay free of distractions for the whole exam. If you cannot guarantee that, choose a test center.
Test center, or use a different computer
Chromebooks and Linux are not supported for OnVUE, and corporate computers often have restrictions that prevent delivery. Use a personal Windows or macOS computer that passes the system test, or book a test center.
Online can work for you
Run the system test on that exact computer and network, clear your desk fully and plan for the 360° room scan. Keep your ID ready and check in 30 minutes early.
Online is not available
The PMI handbook says online proctored testing is not available for citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Macau and Hong Kong, regardless of where they are. Mainland China uses paper-based testing.
The preloaded example is unreliable home internet, where the test center is the safer choice because one dropped connection can disrupt a long exam. The checker is a 3FOLD planning aid; you decide when you schedule with PMI.
What rules apply to both options?
The ID, name, timing and change rules are the same wherever you test.
- Name match. Your ID must match the name on your scheduling notification exactly. The handbook says there are no exceptions, and PMI cannot guarantee a name update within 5 business days of an exam.
- ID type. Valid, non-expired, original, government-issued, with a clear photograph and signature, in Roman characters or with an official English translation.
- Check-in. 30 minutes before your appointment. Late arrivals are not permitted to take the test.
- Breaks. PMI lists two 10-minute breaks. Follow the on-screen instructions for when they are offered.
- Changes. Reschedule or cancel up to 48 hours before, through the exam vendor’s website. A US$70 fee plus taxes applies inside 30 days. Missing the appointment forfeits the fee.

What mistakes should you avoid?
Most exam-day problems are avoidable if you test your setup and check your name early.
- Choosing online for convenience without running the system test on your actual computer and network.
- Using a work laptop with a firewall, a VPN, a second monitor or a touch screen.
- Leaving a phone, notes or a pen within arm’s reach of the desk.
- Having a name on your ID that differs from the one in your PMI account.
- Arriving or logging in less than 30 minutes before the appointment.
- Relying on old blog posts that describe Prometric. PMI exams are delivered through Pearson VUE.

Frequently asked questions
Can you take the PMP exam online from home?
Yes. The Project Management Institute (PMI) lets you take the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam either in person at a Pearson VUE test center or securely online. For the online option you run a system test, use a private space and have a valid photo ID ready. PMI’s page lists the test center as its recommended option.
Is the PMP exam online or at a test center?
You choose when you schedule. The Project Management Institute (PMI) offers the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam at a Pearson VUE test center or through online proctoring. The exam content, 180 questions in 240 minutes, is the same. The difference is the setting, the check-in process and the equipment rules.
How early should you check in for the PMP exam?
Check in 30 minutes before your appointment, whether you test online or at a center. The Project Management Institute (PMI) certification handbook says candidates who arrive late to an appointment will not be permitted to take the test, so build in extra time for travel or for the online technology checks.
What ID do you need for the PMP exam?
You need a valid, non-expired, government-issued ID with a clear photograph and your signature, in English (Roman) characters or with an official English translation. The name must match your Project Management Institute (PMI) scheduling notification exactly. The handbook says there are no exceptions, so fix any name mismatch well before exam day.
What are the system requirements for the PMP exam online?
Pearson VUE asks for at least 6 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload, a working webcam and microphone, and Windows 10 or 11 or macOS 14 or later. Chromebooks and Linux are not supported, and only one monitor is allowed. Run the system test on the same computer and network you will use for the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam.
Can you take breaks during the PMP exam?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) says the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam includes two 10-minute breaks. The PMI handbook says unscheduled breaks need proctor permission, and Pearson VUE says online candidates must not leave the webcam view unless the exam confirms an approved break. Read the break instructions on screen before you start.
Can you reschedule a PMP exam appointment if your setup fails?
You can change an appointment up to 48 hours before it, and PMI charges a US$70 fee plus taxes inside 30 days of the exam. The Project Management Institute (PMI) handbook says you cannot reschedule within 48 hours. If your online access fails, call the exam delivery vendor directly rather than emailing.
Is the online PMP exam available in every country?
Not for everyone. The Project Management Institute (PMI) handbook says online proctored testing is not available for citizens of the People’s Republic of China, Macau and Hong Kong. Mainland China uses paper-based testing instead. If you are unsure, check the options shown when you schedule your Project Management Professional (PMP) exam.
