PMI student kit completion: why it matters for PMP® certification preparation
Beyond training attendance: why completing your PMI student kit, including the Knowledge Check, is part of a structured PMP® preparation.
In this guide
Preparing for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam involves more than attending sessions, studying concepts and practicing questions. It also means completing the learning activities and keeping the records that go with your training. In a recent reminder, the Project Management Institute (PMI®) asked its Authorized Training Partners (ATPs) to make sure every learner receives and completes a student kit. This guide explains what that means for you.
Quick answer
The PMI student kit is the set of PMI-approved learning content that comes with a PMI Authorized Training Partner PMP course, and it includes the Knowledge Check. PMI has asked Authorized Training Partners to ensure every learner receives and completes the kit, including the Knowledge Check, during or shortly after training. A completed kit helps verify that a learner finished the training if the PMP application is selected for audit, but it does not guarantee audit approval.
| Issued by | Project Management Institute (PMI), through its Authorized Training Partners |
| What it is | PMI-approved content that reinforces key concepts and includes the Knowledge Check |
| Who must act | Learners complete the kit; Authorized Training Partners assign it and follow up |
| When to take the Knowledge Check | At the end of the training, after you finish the course |
| Rest of the kit | Complete during or shortly after training |
| Knowledge Check | Learners must complete it to receive a PMI Certificate of Achievement; no minimum score is required |
| Audit use | A completed kit helps verify training if an application is audited; it does not guarantee approval |
What is the PMI student kit?
The PMI student kit is the learning resource that supports your engagement with a PMI Authorized Training Partner course.
PMI describes it as PMI-approved content that reinforces key concepts and helps you prepare for certification. It also includes the Knowledge Check, which learners must complete to generate their PMI Certificate of Achievement in the learning management system (LMS). Receiving access is only the first step. You still need to review the materials, complete the activities and follow your provider’s instructions.
Do not skip the Knowledge Check because you attended every live session or are already busy with mock exams. It is part of the course, and you take it at the end of the training, once you have finished the course.
To see what the kit looks like, follow PMI’s step-by-step guide to navigating the student kit materials. It shows how to sign in to myPMI, open My Courses, move through the kit sections from the left-hand menu, and download your PMI Certificate of Achievement.

Why has PMI emphasized student kit completion?
Assigning course materials does not mean learners have completed them.
PMI’s reminder points to a practical gap: a kit can be assigned and never finished. PMI also notes that from 1 December 2026, live instructor-led training hours accepted toward PMP eligibility are limited to approved pathways, including PMI Authorized Training Partners, so clear records of ATP training matter more. See PMI’s new PMP exam page for the approved pathways.
How does the student kit support your PMP® application records?
A completed kit helps verify your training if PMI selects your application for audit, but it is not a substitute for the evidence PMI asks for.
PMP applicants must meet PMI’s eligibility requirements and provide supporting information. If PMI selects an application for audit, the applicant must follow PMI’s audit instructions and provide the evidence requested. PMI may use course completion records, including Knowledge Check results, to verify training completion. Keep your course confirmations and completion records organized, and read our guide to PMP eligibility requirements.
Important: completing the student kit does not guarantee that an application will be approved or that an audit will be passed. Outcomes depend on your compliance with PMI’s requirements and the evidence it requests.
Why does completing the kit matter for your preparation?
It turns attendance into active, organized preparation.
Some learners attend every session but postpone assigned activities while they focus on practice questions. Without reminders, parts of the course stay incomplete. Finishing the kit during or shortly after training gives you a clear next step as you move from instructor-led training to independent study, and it stops course tasks piling up at the last minute. Our top study resources for PMP exam preparation show how the pieces fit together.

What should PMP® learners do?
Follow five steps, from confirming access to keeping your records.
- Confirm you have access to your student kit. Check your training communications and the learning platform, and contact your provider if you cannot find it.
- Review the kit and complete the activities. Then take the Knowledge Check at the end of the training. Do not stop at opening or downloading the materials.
- Finish outstanding activities during or shortly after training, following your provider’s guidance.
- Keep your training records organized. If PMI audits your application, follow its official instructions on what to submit.
- Keep preparing for the exam. The kit is one part. You still need the knowledge and judgment to answer questions aligned with the Exam Content Outline (ECO).

What should Authorized Training Partners do?
PMI encourages partners to make completion part of the learner experience, not an afterthought.
PMI asks ATPs to purchase and assign a student kit for every learner, encourage completion of the kit, including the Knowledge Check, during or shortly after training, include completion reminders in course communications and follow-up, and review internal processes so kits are consistently part of the training.
Frequently asked questions
Is completing the PMI student kit important for PMP candidates?
Yes. The Project Management Institute (PMI) has reminded its Authorized Training Partners to ensure every learner receives and completes their student kit, including the Knowledge Check, during or shortly after training. Project Management Professional (PMP) learners should follow the instructions that apply to their course.
Does completing the student kit guarantee that I will pass a PMI audit?
No. Completing the student kit does not guarantee audit approval. If the Project Management Institute (PMI) selects your Project Management Professional (PMP) application for audit, you must meet the eligibility requirements and submit the evidence PMI requests.
Is attending the PMP training enough?
Attendance is important, but learners should also complete the course activities and follow their training provider’s instructions. PMI’s reminder to Authorized Training Partners focuses on completing the student kit, not only on assigning it.
When should I complete my PMI student kit?
The Project Management Institute (PMI) encourages learners to complete the student kit, including the Knowledge Check, during or shortly after training. If you have outstanding activities, review your course instructions and finish them as soon as you can.
Do I have to pass the Knowledge Check in the student kit?
No minimum score is required, but you must complete the Knowledge Check. PMI has told its Authorized Training Partners that learners must complete the Knowledge Check to receive a PMI Certificate of Achievement for the Project Management Professional (PMP) course. Learners who do not complete it will not receive the certificate.
What should I do if I cannot access my student kit?
Contact your training provider and confirm that the student kit has been assigned to you. Then follow the access instructions for your Project Management Professional (PMP) course.
