People often ask whether passing the LEED Green Associate exam means you can manage a LEED project. This article looks at what the USGBC and GBCI sources say about the credential, about project roles and about how projects are registered. It uses the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook, the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook, the USGBC guide to working on LEED v5 projects in Arc, the USGBC support page on LEED Online project team roles and the LEED Certification Manual, 2024 edition. It is not legal or contractual advice, and it does not state fees, exam dates, eligibility rules or job outcomes, so check the official USGBC and Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) pages before you plan.

Quick answer

None of the USGBC and GBCI sources we read says a LEED Green Associate credential is required to manage a LEED project, or that it appoints the holder to that role. The handbook describes knowledge of green building principles and does not describe project management duties. Who manages a project is decided by the project team and its agreements. The credential shows what you know, and it can help you take part in the process.

Short answerThe sources do not require a Green Associate credential to manage a LEED project
Handbook wordingUp-to-date understanding of green building principles and practices
Project rolesThe handbook lists team members and defines no Green Associate role
ArcTeams register, complete forms, upload documents and submit
AP with SpecialtyKnowledge and skills to support the LEED certification process
WordingProjects are certified, and people hold credentials
Exam basisThe Green Associate exam is based on the LEED v5 rating system
What is not hereFees, exam dates, eligibility rules, job outcomes and legal advice

Can a LEED Green Associate manage a LEED project?

The sources do not say the credential is needed, and they do not say it gives the role.

The LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook says credential holders have a documented up-to-date understanding of the most current green building principles and practices. It lists integrative project team members, such as architects, consultants, contractors, engineers, facility managers and owners, as something the candidate should know, but it does not define a role that a Green Associate fills on a project. It does not describe project management duties either. So the credential can support you in a project role, but the sources do not say it decides who manages the project. The table below sets out the main points. Our guide on who should get LEED Green Associate and our guide on LEED certification for individuals cover the wider picture.

What do the sources say about roles and credentials?

The sources we read do not link a project role to a credential.

The USGBC guide to working on LEED v5 projects in Arc says all LEED v5 projects are registered in Arc, where teams complete credit forms, upload documentation, mark credits ready for review and submit. It does not mention a LEED credential as a requirement for registering or working on a project. The USGBC support page on LEED Online project team roles describes Project Administrator, Project Team Manager and Project Team Member roles and says no credential is required for a role. That page covers LEED Online, the earlier platform, and not Arc, so check the current Arc guidance. The LEED Certification Manual, 2024 edition says Review Teams carry out the technical review and that GBCI manages the certification of projects. A credential does not replace that review.

  • Projects are registered in Arc, and the Arc page names no credential requirement
  • The LEED Online page ties no team role to a credential
  • Review Teams carry out the technical review
  • Who manages a project is decided by the team and its agreements

What can a Green Associate contribute to a project?

Knowledge of the LEED process and the credit topics helps a team work together.

The handbook lists eight knowledge domains: LEED Process, Integrative Process Planning and Assessments, Location and Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. It also covers life cycle cost analysis, product purchasing and declarations, and embodied carbon and life-cycle assessment. The AIA Architect article on LEED v5 says carbon assessment and reduction are LEED v5 prerequisites. Knowing these topics helps you follow credit discussions, ask better questions and keep documents in order, which are useful in a team. Our guide on the LEED Green Associate syllabus walks through the domains.

When does LEED AP with Specialty become relevant?

It becomes relevant when you want to support the certification process in more depth.

The LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook says a credential holder possesses the knowledge and skills necessary to support the LEED certification process, and that prior LEED project experience is strongly recommended. It also says Green Associate holders can register for a LEED AP with Specialty exam. Like the Green Associate, it is a credential of knowledge and skills, and the sources we read do not describe it as a project management appointment or as approval authority. Our guide on how to become a LEED professional explains the route in more detail, and a training certificate is not a credential, so see our guide on the difference between a LEED training certificate and a credential.

  • Green Associate: up-to-date understanding of green building principles
  • AP with Specialty: knowledge and skills to support certification
  • Neither source describes a project management appointment
  • Check the current eligibility rules with USGBC and GBCI

How do you plan your next step?

Decide whether you want knowledge or project experience first, then read the handbook.

Start by reading the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook. Eligibility and registration rules are set by USGBC and GBCI and this article does not state them, so see our guide on LEED Green Associate eligibility before you apply. If you are weighing the effort, our guide on whether LEED Green Associate is worth it sets out the questions to ask, and our page of LEED Green Associate practice questions tests your foundations. If you want to manage a project, ask your team how roles are set, because the sources do not tie a role to a credential. The courses are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams.

Frequently asked questions

Can a LEED Green Associate manage a LEED project?

None of the USGBC and GBCI sources we read says a LEED Green Associate credential is required to manage a LEED project, or that it gives the holder that role. The handbook describes knowledge of green building principles and does not describe project management duties.

Do you need a LEED credential to register a LEED v5 project?

The USGBC support page on Arc says all LEED v5 projects are registered in Arc and describes the registration steps. It does not mention a LEED credential as a requirement, so check the current USGBC terms if you are unsure.

What does the LEED Green Associate handbook say about project roles?

The handbook lists integrative project team members such as architects, consultants, contractors, engineers, facility managers and owners as a knowledge area. It does not define a role that a LEED Green Associate fills on a project.

What does a LEED Green Associate credential show?

The LEED Green Associate handbook says credential holders have a documented up-to-date understanding of green building principles and practices. The exam is based on the LEED v5 rating system.

What can a LEED Green Associate contribute to a project team?

The handbook covers the LEED process, integrative process planning, and topics such as life cycle cost analysis and embodied carbon. That knowledge can help a team talk about credits, and the team decides who holds which task.

How are team roles set in a LEED project?

An older USGBC support page on LEED Online describes Project Administrator, Project Team Manager and Project Team Member roles and says no credential is required for a role. That page covers LEED Online, not Arc, so check the current Arc guidance.

When does a LEED AP with Specialty credential become relevant?

The LEED AP with Specialty handbook says a credential holder has the knowledge and skills to support the LEED certification process, and that prior LEED project experience is strongly recommended. A LEED Green Associate holder can register for a LEED AP with Specialty exam.

Who decides whether a LEED project is certified?

The LEED Certification Manual describes Review Teams who carry out the technical review, with GBCI managing the certification of projects. A credential does not replace that review.

Is a LEED training certificate a credential?

No. A training certificate shows you completed a LEED course, while a LEED credential is earned through the exam administered by GBCI. A course prepares you for the exam, and the exam result decides the credential.

How long are the 3FOLD Training LEED courses and how are they delivered?

On the 3FOLD Training course pages, the LEED Green Associate course runs 14 hours, the LEED AP BD+C course runs 21 hours and the combined LEED path runs 35 hours. They are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams.

Where can I check the current LEED v5 project rules?

The USGBC support pages on LEED v5 and Arc, the LEED Certification Manual and the LEED candidate handbooks hold the current rules. This article does not state fees, exam dates, job outcomes or eligibility rules, so check USGBC and GBCI before you plan.
