CMQ/OE® Exam Policies at a Test Center
What happens at check-in, what to wear, what you may bring into the exam room, and what can cost you your seat or your fee.
ASQ exam preparation · Licensed by KHDA, Dubai
The Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE®) exam from the American Society for Quality (ASQ) is open-book, but that does not mean anything goes. At a Prometric test center, strict rules cover your ID, your accessories, your books and your calculator, and breaking one can end your exam. This guide sets out the rules, and how to get there on time, so nothing surprises you at the door.
For the ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) exam at a Prometric test center, arrive at least 30 minutes early, because late arrivals cannot test and forfeit the exam fee. Bring one valid government-issued photo ID with a signature, wear no jewelry beyond wedding and engagement rings, bring only bound references and a silent, non-programmable calculator, and change your appointment at least 5 days ahead.

CMQ/OE is a registered mark of the American Society for Quality. 3FOLD Training prepares learners; ASQ examines and certifies, and Prometric runs the test center. Rules can change, so confirm them on the official ASQ CMQ/OE page and the ASQ certification FAQ. If your exam is remote-proctored instead, read our guide to the remote-proctored ASQ CMQ/OE exam.
How early should you arrive, and how far is your test center?
Arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment. Late arrivals are not admitted, and you forfeit the exam fee.
Find your center first: open the ASQ page on Prometric and choose Locate a Test Center, then search by address, postal code or city. ASQ also lists exam locations. Then plan the trip around the problems that make people late:
- Parking: allow time to find it, and check beforehand where you will park.
- Traffic and public transport: leave earlier than the route planner suggests.
- Distance: if the center is far, travel the day before and stay nearby, so a delay cannot cost you your seat.
Check-in includes ID and security inspections, so a margin of time also keeps you calm before a 4 hour 18 minute exam.
What ID do you need at check-in for the CMQ/OE® exam?
One valid, government-issued photo ID with a signature, such as a passport or driver’s license.
- One valid, unexpired, government-issued photo ID with a signature.
- The name on the ID must match your registration.
| Where you test | ID you must present |
|---|---|
| Testing outside your country of citizenship | A valid passport |
| Testing within your country of citizenship | A valid passport, driver’s license, national ID or military ID |
What should you wear and bring to the test center?
Prometric inspects eyeglasses, jewelry and other accessories for hidden cameras that could capture exam content, at check-in and after breaks. Dress simply to keep the checks quick.
- Wear comfortable clothes you can sit in for a long exam. This is our practical advice, not an ASQ rule.
- Jewelry: only wedding and engagement rings are allowed.
- Eyeglasses: you remove them for a close visual inspection at check-in and after breaks.
- Hair accessories, ties and bowties: subject to inspection. Leave ornate clips, combs, barrettes, headbands, tie clips and cuff links at home.
- Other personal items: they go in a locker, so bring as little as you can.
A violation of security protocol may result in the termination of your exam and notification to your test sponsor, which is ASQ.

What are the rules for reference materials?
The exam is open-book, but every reference, including all forms of notes, must be bound and stay bound.
What counts as bound?
- Material permanently bound by stitching or glue.
- Material fastened securely in its cover by fasteners that penetrate all papers: ring binders, spiral binders, plastic snap binders, brads or screw posts.
- Post-it notes used as book tabs only, attached before you enter the test center.
What is prohibited in the exam area?
- Hand-stapled materials, unbound notes, and blank writing or unbound tablets.
- Slide charts and wheel charts with rotating or sliding pieces.
- Collections of questions and answers, and weekly refresher-course quizzes, unless the questions are removed or obscured.
The Test Center Administrator (TCA) inspects all references before you enter the exam room. The desk is approximately 48 inches long and 24 inches wide, so keep your set compact. You are also responsible for following applicable copyright laws. To match your material to the current syllabus, see our guide to the CMQ/OE 2026 exam changes.
Open-book still means bound, inspected and compact.
Which calculator can you use in the CMQ/OE® exam?
The exam has a basic scientific calculator on screen, and Test Center Administrators can provide a hand-held basic one on request. You may also bring a silent, non-programmable one, plus a backup.
| Allowed | Not allowed |
|---|---|
| On-screen basic scientific calculator, built into the computer-based exam | Not applicable |
| Silent, hand-held, battery-operated calculator with no programmable memory | Programmable calculators, including graphing models and ones that store text or have function buttons (F1, F2) |
| A backup calculator, if you want one | The Texas Instruments TI-89 or similar |
