Can LEED Credentials Expire?

LEED Credentials

Can LEED Credentials Expire?

Yes. LEED professional credentials such as the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP with specialty must be maintained through continuing education and renewal. If the required requirements are not completed, a credential can become inactive and eventually expire.

2 Years Standard credential maintenance cycle
12 Months Grace period after a credential lapses
Expired Retesting is required after the grace period
Short answer: A LEED professional credential does not remain active indefinitely. LEED credentials are maintained in two-year reporting periods. If you do not complete the required continuing education and renew your credential, it becomes inactive. If it remains inactive for more than 12 months, it expires and you must register and retest as a new candidate.

Can LEED Credentials Expire?

Yes. LEED professional credentials can expire if the credential holder does not complete the required continuing education and renewal process.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) , LEED credentials have three possible statuses: active, inactive and expired.

The important point is that missing the renewal date does not immediately mean that the credential is permanently lost. A 12-month inactive period is available during which the credential holder can complete the missing requirements and renew the credential.

StatusWhat it meansWhat you can do
Active Your credential is current and you are maintaining it within the reporting period. Continue earning CE hours and renew on time.
Inactive Your credential has lapsed after the renewal date. You have up to 12 months to earn/report missing CE hours and renew.
Expired Your credential has remained inactive for more than 12 months. You must register and retest as a new candidate.

How Long Is a LEED Credential Active?

LEED credentials are maintained through two-year reporting periods. The reporting period starts when the credential is earned and ends two years minus one day from the start date.

For example, if you earned your LEED credential on August 30, 2024, your reporting period would run from August 30, 2024 through August 29, 2026.

Your exact reporting period and renewal date can be checked through your USGBC account under your credentials information.

Important: The renewal date is the last day of your reporting period. The day after your renewal date, your credential becomes inactive if it has not been renewed.

LEED Credential Maintenance Is Ongoing

Earning the LEED Green Associate or LEED AP credential is not the end of the process. Credential holders are expected to continue learning and maintain their credentials through the Credential Maintenance Program (CMP).

The continuing education requirements depend on the credential. For example, a LEED Green Associate requires 15 CE hours during its two-year reporting period, while a LEED AP with specialty requires 30 CE hours, including 6 LEED-specific hours related to the specialty.

What Happens When a LEED Credential Becomes Inactive?

If you do not complete the required continuing education and renewal by the end of your two-year reporting period, your LEED credential lapses and becomes inactive.

You then have a 12-month grace period to earn and report your missing CE hours and renew your credential.

Inactive does not mean expired. An inactive credential can still be reactivated during the 12-month period by completing the required maintenance requirements and renewing it. Reactivation fees may apply.

Does the Reporting Period Change During the Inactive Period?

No. The reporting period itself does not change. However, any additional time used during the 12-month inactive period is taken into account in the next reporting period.

In practical terms, delaying renewal can reduce the amount of time available in your next two-year reporting period.

When Does a LEED Credential Expire?

A LEED credential becomes expired when it has remained inactive for more than 12 months.

At that point, the credential is no longer valid. USGBC states that the credential holder must register and retest as a new candidate to regain a credential.

Once expired, the credential cannot simply be renewed. The credential holder must go through the applicable credential examination process again as a new candidate.

Can You Use an Expired LEED Credential?

No. Once a LEED credential has expired, it is no longer valid. USGBC states that upon expiration, the credential holder must cease use of the credential and associated logo.

This is different from simply having a certificate or record showing that you passed the exam in the past. The current credential status determines whether the professional credential is active.

Do You Need to Retake the LEED Exam After Expiration?

Yes. If your LEED credential has expired, USGBC requires you to register and retest as a new candidate.

Current credential holders in good standing do not need to retake their exams simply because LEED exam versions are updated. Retesting becomes necessary when the credential itself has expired.

Example: A LEED professional whose credential remains active continues through the normal two-year maintenance cycle even if the LEED exam version changes. An expired credential, however, requires the individual to start the credential process again and retest.

This distinction is particularly important for professionals who earned their LEED credential under an earlier exam version and are concerned about the transition to newer LEED exam versions.

What Happens to Renewal Fees?

USGBC currently uses different credential maintenance fees depending on when the credential is renewed.

Renewal timingCurrent fee
Early renewal during year 2 through the renewal date$85
On-time renewal: day after renewal date through first 30 days of grace period$100
Late renewal: more than 30 days into the grace period$150

These are credential maintenance renewal fees. They are separate from fees associated with taking a LEED examination.

Can You Renew a LEED Credential Early?

Yes. USGBC allows credential holders to renew during the second year of their reporting period after completing the required continuing education hours.

Early renewal also provides access to the reduced $85 renewal rate.

How Can You Avoid LEED Credential Expiration?

The simplest approach is to treat credential maintenance as an ongoing process rather than waiting until the end of the reporting period.

1. Check Your Reporting Period Log into your USGBC account and confirm your credential status and renewal date.
2. Know Your CE Requirement Confirm the number of CE hours required for your specific credential.
3. Earn CE Hours Regularly Complete eligible education, project participation, authorship or volunteering activities.
4. Report Your Hours Keep your credential maintenance records updated through your USGBC account.
5. Keep Documentation Retain supporting records for your completed CE activities.
6. Renew Before the Deadline Renew during the active period to avoid inactive status and additional fees.

Do You Have to Wait Until the End of Two Years?

No. You do not have to wait until the final day of your reporting period. USGBC allows early renewal once you are eligible and have completed the required CE hours.

Planning your CE activities throughout the reporting period can make renewal easier and reduce the risk of missing the deadline.

Do LEED Project Certifications Expire?

LEED professional credentials and LEED project certifications are different things and follow different maintenance rules.

A LEED professional credential, such as LEED Green Associate or LEED AP, is maintained through the Credential Maintenance Program. It can become inactive and eventually expire if the professional does not meet the credential maintenance requirements.

Project certification has separate rules depending on the LEED rating system and certification pathway.

Important distinction: Do not confuse a professional LEED credential with a LEED-certified building or project. The expiration rules for professional credentials are not the same as the rules for project certifications.

LEED BD+C and ID+C project certifications do not expire. LEED O+M certifications, however, have defined certification periods and recertification options depending on the applicable LEED program and certification pathway.

LEED O+M projects can pursue recertification to maintain their certified status.

What Happens If You Miss Your LEED Renewal Date?

Missing the renewal date does not immediately require you to retake the LEED exam.

Your credential becomes inactive, and you have up to 12 months from the date it lapsed to complete and report the missing CE requirements and renew your credential.

However, waiting longer can result in higher renewal or reactivation costs and can reduce the available time in your next reporting period.

Best practice: Do not rely on the 12-month grace period as your normal renewal strategy. Complete your CE requirements and renew while your credential is still active whenever possible.

What Happens If Your LEED AP Credential Expires?

If a LEED AP with specialty credential remains inactive for more than 12 months, it expires and is no longer valid.

According to USGBC, an expired LEED AP credential cannot simply be reactivated. The credential holder must start the credential process again and retest for the applicable LEED credential requirements.

In particular, USGBC states that if a LEED AP with specialty credential expires, the individual must start the credential process from the beginning and retest for the LEED Green Associate credential.

This makes regular credential maintenance especially important for professionals who use LEED AP status as part of their professional credentials.

LEED Credential Expiration: Key Points to Remember

Two-year cycle LEED professional credentials are maintained through two-year reporting periods.
CE is required Credential holders must complete the required continuing education hours.
Inactive comes first Missing the renewal date makes the credential inactive rather than immediately expired.
12-month grace period You have up to 12 months to complete missing requirements and renew.
Expiration is different After more than 12 months of inactivity, the credential expires.
Retesting after expiration An expired credential requires registration and retesting as a new candidate.
