After a PMP® (Project Management Professional) course, most learners ask the same thing: apply now, or study first? PMI (the Project Management Institute) reviews your application before you can schedule the exam, so the timing matters. This article gives you the flow from training to exam day and helps you pick the right moment to submit.
Quick answer
You can submit your Project Management Professional (PMP) application to PMI (the Project Management Institute) as soon as your training is complete, your eligibility is confirmed and your application information is accurate. You do not need to finish all your exam preparation first. PMI states that online applications are generally processed within 5 calendar days, unless PMI selects the application for audit. Approval is not exam scheduling: after approval you pay the exam fee and then schedule the exam, and the one-year eligibility period starts at approval.
| Awarding body | PMI (the Project Management Institute) |
|---|---|
| Credential | Project Management Professional (PMP®) |
| Training requirement | 35 hours of project management education |
| Application review | Generally within 5 calendar days for online applications |
| If selected for audit | The process takes longer; PMI’s handbook says the audit should take about 5-7 business days once the audit requirements are met |
| After approval | Pay the exam fee, receive your eligibility information, then schedule the exam |
| Eligibility period | 1 year, starting at approval |
| Exam attempts | Up to 3 within the eligibility period |
Should you submit your PMP application right after training?
Yes, you can submit as soon as your training is complete and your eligibility is confirmed, but the right day depends on how prepared you feel.
Completing the course does not mean you must schedule the exam straight away. It also does not mean you must wait until you have finished every mock exam. PMI’s review runs on its own clock, so you can submit and keep preparing while the review takes place.
Learners often feel that applying is the final step before the exam, so they delay it until they feel perfect. In reality the application is an early step, and the review time is useful preparation time.
The flow below shows the full path, from training to the credential. The red-tinted steps are the ones where timing is out of your hands.
- Complete training
- Confirm eligibility
- Assess exam readiness
- Submit application
- PMI review
- Approval or audit
- Exam payment
- Schedule exam
- Final preparation
- PMP credential

What should be ready before you click submit?
Three things should be ready: completed training, confirmed eligibility and accurate application information.
- Your 35 hours of project management education are complete.
- You have checked that you meet the PMP eligibility requirements, including your project experience.
- Every detail in the application is complete and accurate, because PMI may select any application for audit.
Accuracy matters more than speed. Do not submit an incomplete application just to get the process moving. Our guide on how to fill in project experience in a PMP application helps with the section that takes most learners the longest. The PMI Project Management Professional page lists the current requirements.
How long does PMI take to review your application?
PMI states that online applications are generally processed within 5 calendar days, unless the application is selected for audit.
In practice, this means the review rarely needs to delay your plans. If you are close to ready, submitting early lets the review finish while you complete your final preparation.
What if PMI selects your application for audit?
An audit can make the process longer, because you must provide the documentation PMI requests before it can finish the review.
Not every application is selected. Once your documentation meets the audit requirements, PMI’s handbook says the audit should take about 5-7 business days to complete (PMI Certification Handbook). Our guide to the PMP exam application audit requirements explains what is involved, so you can prepare your documents before you need them.
The right day to submit depends on an accurate application and your own exam readiness.
What happens between approval and exam day?
After approval you pay the exam fee, receive your eligibility information from PMI and then schedule the exam.
Is approval the same as scheduling?
No. Approval confirms that you are eligible. It does not book a seat. You pay the applicable exam fee, PMI sends your eligibility details by email, and you then choose your exam date and delivery method. Our step-by-step guide shows how to schedule the PMP exam, and our UAE guide explains where to take the PMP exam.
Does the one-year clock start at approval?
Yes. PMI gives you 1 year from approval to take the exam, with up to 3 attempts in that period. That is why timing matters in both directions: a late application delays your review, and an early application with little preparation uses part of your year.

Application readiness
Exam confidence
The preloaded example has a complete application but low exam confidence. The result shows that you can apply now while you keep preparing, and schedule the exam later.
How do you decide when to apply?
Apply when your application is accurate and you feel prepared enough to move forward; there is no single correct day.
- Application ready, exam-ready: submit now, and schedule the exam once approved.
- Application ready, not yet exam-ready: submit now if you want the review finished, keep preparing, and schedule when your mock exam results are steady.
- Application not ready: finish the details first. Accuracy is more important than speed.
What should you do while PMI reviews your application?
Keep preparing. Use the review days to take full-length mock exams, revisit your weakest domain and decide roughly when you want to sit the exam. Treat the review as part of your study plan rather than a pause in it.
What if you apply early and then need more time?
Approval does not force you to schedule straight away, but the 1-year eligibility period keeps running. An application submitted with very little preparation can leave you with less time for your attempts. An application submitted with steady mock exam results usually leaves you with more than enough.
If you are unsure about your readiness, full-length mock exams give you evidence rather than a feeling. Read how our trainers approach PMI PMP certification, or ask a person through the course inquiry form.
Not sure you are exam-ready? Full-length mock exams are included, so you can judge your readiness.
Frequently asked questions
How soon should you submit your PMP application after training?

Do you need to finish studying before you submit the PMP application?

How long does PMI take to process a PMP application?
PMI states that online applications for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification are generally processed within 5 calendar days, unless PMI selects the application for audit. An audit makes the process longer.

Is PMP application approval the same as scheduling the exam?
No. For the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, approval comes first. After approval you pay the exam fee, receive your eligibility information from PMI and then schedule the exam as a separate step.
When does the one-year PMP eligibility period start?
The one-year eligibility period for the PMI Project Management Professional (PMP) exam starts when PMI approves your application. Within that year you may take the exam up to 3 times.
Can you schedule the PMP exam straight after approval?
