An online exam depends on your equipment as much as your preparation, so AACE International (AACEI) tells Certified Cost Professional (CCP) candidates to check their computer before they schedule. This guide explains what the Kryterion system check covers and then shows which requirements Kryterion publishes. It also lists the steps to take before exam day.
Quick answer
Before you schedule an online proctored CCP exam, run the Kryterion System Check. It covers your internet speed, your webcam and your microphone. Kryterion publishes figures for the internet connection: 1.0 Mbps or faster each way, ping under 200 ms and jitter under 50 ms. AACEI recommends a personal computer. Kryterion warns that automated checks cannot confirm that your equipment works on exam day.

What is the Kryterion system check?
AACEI’s examination delivery page says to make sure that your computer meets the system requirements before you schedule an online proctored exam. It points to the Kryterion Test Taker Guide and to the Kryterion System Check page.
What does it cover?
The Kryterion System Check page covers 3 areas. First, it tests your internet speed. Then it tests your webcam and your microphone. It also suggests free tools for each test.
What are its limits?
However, Kryterion states that automated equipment checks cannot confirm that your equipment works on exam day. Therefore, treat the check as a first filter and not as a final answer.

When should you run it?
AACEI says to run it before you schedule your exam. Then, in our view, run it again close to exam day, on the same computer and network that you plan to use. This second run is our suggestion, not an AACEI rule.
Our guide to test center and online options explains how to choose between the two. In addition, our CCP exam day checklist covers the rest of your preparation.
How do you run it, step by step?
Follow these steps in order. Steps 1 to 5 use Kryterion’s published guidance, while steps 6 and 7 use AACEI’s.
1. Choose the right computer
Use a personal or non-work computer. AACEI recommends it, and Kryterion strongly recommends it, because installing the secure browser may need administrator rights.
2. Check the system and browser
First, confirm that you have Windows 10 or 11, or macOS 12 or newer, with the latest Chrome or Firefox. Also confirm that the screen resolution is at least 1024 x 768.
3. Test your internet speed
Kryterion’s System Check page suggests free speed tools. Then compare your results with the figures in the table below.
4. Test your webcam
Check that the camera works. For example, on a Mac, you may need to allow Kryterion in the privacy settings for the camera and microphone. If you have several cameras, select the one that you want to use.
5. Test your microphone
Use your operating system’s built-in test or a free tool. Also, select the right microphone if you have more than one.
6. Install the secure testing environment
After you schedule your exam, find the link in your Webassessor profile. AACEI says to install Kryterion’s secure testing environment well before exam day.
7. Complete your biometric profile
Finally, the enrolment link for facial recognition is also in your Webassessor profile. AACEI says to complete it well in advance.
Which requirements does Kryterion publish?
Kryterion publishes general requirements for its online proctored exams. However, your test sponsor can set additional rules, so check AACEI’s page as well.
| Item | Kryterion’s published requirement |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 or 11 with the latest Chrome or Firefox |
| Mac | macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer with the latest Chrome or Firefox |
| Screen | Resolution of 1024 x 768 or greater |
| Disk space | At least 50 MB available |
| Webcam and microphone | Required; an external webcam connects by USB |
| Keyboard | English (QWERTY) |
| Internet | Download and upload 1.0 Mbps or faster; ping under 200 ms; jitter under 50 ms |
| Virtual machines | Strictly prohibited |
AACEI allows a built-in camera, although Kryterion’s standard requirement is an external camera unless the test sponsor says otherwise. In addition, download speed should be equal to or greater than upload speed.
Does your network meet the figures?
Enter the results of your speed test. Then the checker compares them with Kryterion’s published figures.
Network check against Kryterion’s figures
For planning only. Run a speed test, then enter your results. The checker compares them with the figures that Kryterion publishes. It does not test your webcam, microphone or software.
About this example: it starts with a download of 20 Mbps, an upload of 5 Mbps, a ping of 250 ms and a jitter of 30 ms. As a result, it shows 1 of 5 checks needing attention: the ping.

What can go wrong?
Most problems come from security software or permissions. For example, Kryterion advises you to allow Respondus in your security software. You may also need to turn off pop-up blockers, antivirus software and firewalls for a short time.
Virtual machines and updates
Virtual machines are strictly prohibited. Also, if the secure browser is out of date, an update prompt appears, and the exam does not start until the update finishes. To reinstall, log in to Webassessor, go to My Assessments and select Install Secure Browser.
Launching the browser is not the exam
Launching the secure browser alone does not start the exam. Instead, follow the separate launch steps. Our guide to arriving late and no-show rules explains why timing matters.
Where can you get help?
Kryterion offers 24/7 live chat support through its candidate support page. Also, AACEI describes live chat as the fastest way to get a response during an online exam.
