What Happens If You Do Not Renew Your PMP® Certification on Time?
If you miss your renewal, the Project Management Institute (PMI®) suspends the certification for 12 months, and then it expires. Here is what each stage means, how to recover and how to stay on track.
In this guide
Your Project Management Professional (PMP) certificate does not last forever, and a busy year can push renewal down the list. If the three-year deadline arrives before you finish your professional development units (PDUs), you want to know exactly what the Project Management Institute (PMI) does next. This guide settles what happens if you miss it, whether you can recover, and how to avoid the problem.
Quick answer
If a Project Management Professional (PMP) holder does not satisfy the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) within the current 3-year cycle, the Project Management Institute (PMI) places the certification in suspended status for 1 year. During suspension, the holder may not use the PMP designation, but can return to active status by earning the required PDUs and completing renewal. If the suspension ends without renewal, the certification expires, and the person must reapply, pay the fees and retake the exam.
| Awarding body | Project Management Institute (PMI) |
| Renewal cycle | 3 years |
| PDUs required | 60 per cycle |
| Category rules | Minimum 35 Education PDUs, maximum 25 Giving Back PDUs, minimum 8 PDUs in each Talent Triangle skill area |
| Payment deadline | No later than 90 days after the cycle end date |
| If requirements are not met | Suspended status for 1 year |
| While suspended | You may not call yourself a certification holder or use the PMP designation |
| Reinstatement | Earn the necessary PDUs and complete renewal during the suspension; next cycle date does not change |
| After 1 year without renewal | Expired; new application, fees and a retake of the exam |
What happens if you do not renew your PMP on time?
PMI places your certification in suspended status for 1 year, and you may not use the PMP designation until you are reinstated.
The PMI Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) Handbook states: “If you do not satisfy the CCR program requirements within your current cycle dates, you will be placed in suspended status.” The same Handbook says that while suspended, you “may not refer to yourself as a certification holder or use the certification designation.”
In practice, that means removing the PMP letters from your email signature, resume and professional profiles until your status returns to active. Your certification moves through three statuses.
| Status | What it means | Can you use the PMP designation? |
|---|---|---|
| Active | Requirements met within the cycle dates | Yes |
| Suspended | Requirements not met within the cycle dates; lasts 1 year | No |
| Expired | Renewal not completed by the end of the suspension | No; you are no longer a certification holder |

Can you reinstate a suspended PMP certification?
Yes. PMI requires you to earn the necessary PDUs and complete the renewal process during the 1-year suspension.
The recovery path has three practical steps.
- Earn the PDUs you are missing, including the category minimums.
- Log your PDUs in your PMI account so they count toward the requirements.
- Complete the renewal process and pay the renewal fee.
Does reinstatement change your next cycle dates?
No. PMI states that the date of your next CCR cycle does not change after you return to active status. The suspension period overlaps the following cycle, so you do not gain extra time for the next renewal.
What happens when the 1-year suspension ends?
If you have not renewed by the end of the suspension, the certification expires, and you must start again as a new applicant.
According to the CCR Handbook, an expired holder can no longer submit PDUs and is no longer considered a certification holder. To become active again, you must complete a new application, submit the associated fees and retake the exam.
That is a much heavier route than renewal. The new application means preparing for the exam again, so it is worth acting during the suspension year. How many PDUs do you need to renew your PMP?
You need 60 PDUs in each 3-year cycle, with category rules for Education, Giving Back and the Talent Triangle skill areas.
| Requirement | PMP rule |
|---|---|
| Total PDUs per cycle | 60 |
| Education PDUs | Minimum 35 |
| Giving Back PDUs | Maximum 25 |
| Each Talent Triangle skill area | Minimum 8 |
| Carryover to the next cycle | Up to 20, from the final 12 months only |
The three Talent Triangle skill areas are Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen. Each PDU represents 1 hour spent on activities such as learning, teaching, presenting, reading or volunteering.
You can complete the renewal process at any point in your cycle once the PDU requirements are met and payment is submitted. PMI states that payment must arrive no later than 90 days after your cycle end date. Renewal fees are subject to membership and regional pricing, so check the amount in your PMI account.
Check your renewal PDUs
For planning only. Your PMI account is the official record of your PDUs.
The preloaded example is a holder with 30 Education PDUs and 10 Giving Back PDUs who has not yet reached 8 PDUs in every skill area. The tool shows 40 of 60 PDUs counted, 20 still needed, and at least 5 of them must be Education PDUs.
How do you avoid missing your PMP renewal?
Start earning PDUs early, check your cycle dates in your PMI account, and finish the PDU requirements before the cycle ends.
PMI states that suspension applies when you have not satisfied the requirements within your cycle dates. The Handbook does not say whether your status changes during the 90 days allowed for payment, so the safe plan is to complete everything before the cycle end date.
- Put your cycle end date in your calendar and set a reminder 6 months before.
- Earn PDUs steadily across the 3 years instead of in the last month.
- Cover all three Talent Triangle skill areas, with at least 8 PDUs in each.
- Keep documentation for every PDU claim for at least 18 months after the cycle ends, because PMI randomly audits a percentage of holders.
- Use the PDUs you earn in the final 12 months wisely, because up to 20 can carry over to the next cycle.
PMI explains how to earn PDUs on its ways to earn PDUs page and on the maintain your certification page. The full rules are in the PMI CCR Handbook. If you are earlier in your journey, our guide to the PMP exam result timeline explains what happens after you pass.
