Quick answer: The 2026 PMP® exam includes several question formats rather than only traditional multiple-choice questions. The current Examination Content Outline lists case or scenario, enhanced matching, graphic-based, multiple-choice single response, multiple-response, point and click, matching, and pull-down list questions.

What changed in the 2026 PMP exam?

The current PMP® examination is built around the updated 2026 Examination Content Outline. Along with changes to the exam content, the outline describes a broader range of question formats that candidates may encounter.

This matters because preparing only for traditional multiple-choice questions may not give you enough practice with the way information can be presented during the exam.

You may need to interpret a project situation, identify relationships between items, work with a chart or diagram, select more than one correct response, identify a location on an image, match items, or select an answer from a pull-down list.

The goal is not simply to memorize the names of the question formats. Your preparation should help you recognize what the question is asking and apply project management judgment to the situation presented.

What are the PMP exam question types in 2026?

According to the current 2026 PMP® Examination Content Outline, the exam can use the following question types:

Question typeWhat it can require you to do
Case or ScenarioAnalyze a project situation and determine the appropriate response or action.
Enhanced MatchingMatch related information, potentially using images, diagrams, or drag-and-drop interaction.
Graphic-Based QuestionsInterpret charts, graphs, diagrams, images, or other visual information.
Multiple-Choice Single ResponseSelect one correct response from the available choices.
Multiple-ResponseSelect more than one correct answer from the available choices.
Point and ClickIdentify a specific area or hotspot within an image.
MatchingMatch items from one list with the appropriate items from another list.
Pull-down ListSelect the appropriate response from a drop-down list.

The exact number of questions in each format can vary by exam form. The question types above describe the formats identified in the current 2026 Examination Content Outline.

What are case or scenario questions?

Case or scenario questions present a project situation and ask you to determine what the project manager should do, should have done, or should consider next.

These questions are particularly important because PMP® questions often test how you apply project management principles rather than whether you can recall a definition word for word.

What should you look for?

  • What is happening in the project?
  • What is the actual problem or concern?
  • What has already happened?
  • Who is involved?
  • What should the project manager do next?
  • Which response addresses the situation appropriately?
Illustrative example
A stakeholder raises a concern about a deliverable after a change has already been implemented. What should the project manager do first?

This is an example of the style of reasoning a scenario question can require. It is not a PMI exam question and is included only to illustrate the format.

What are enhanced matching questions?

Enhanced matching questions require you to establish relationships between different pieces of information. The current 2026 Examination Content Outline indicates that enhanced matching may include images or diagrams and can involve drag-and-drop interaction.

Instead of simply choosing one answer from four traditional options, you may need to understand several items and place or connect them with the appropriate response.

The best preparation is to understand the underlying project management concept rather than trying to memorize a particular screen layout.

What are graphic-based questions?

Graphic-based questions use visual information such as charts, graphs, diagrams, or images. You may need to interpret what the visual is showing before selecting your response.

For example, a question could present project performance information in a graph and ask you to identify what the information means or determine the appropriate project management response.

How should you prepare?

  • Practice reading charts and project data.
  • Review the meaning of common project management metrics.
  • Read the question before interpreting the graphic.
  • Do not assume that every number in a graphic is relevant.
  • Look for the relationship between the visual information and the question.

What are multiple-choice single-response questions?

Multiple-choice single-response questions require you to select one correct response from the choices provided.

This is the traditional format many candidates associate with the PMP® exam. However, even a conventional multiple-choice question may still require significant analysis when it is based on a project scenario.

Read every option carefully. A choice may describe something reasonable but still not be the most appropriate response for the situation presented.

What are multiple-response questions?

Multiple-response questions require you to select more than one correct answer. This is different from a single-response question where only one option should be selected.

The important distinction is to read the instruction carefully before selecting your answers. Do not assume that every question has only one correct option.

Illustrative example
Which two actions would be appropriate when addressing the situation described in the question?

If a question asks you to select two answers, you should evaluate each option against the scenario and identify the required number of responses.

This example is not a PMI exam question.

What are point and click questions?

Point and click questions present an image containing areas that may be relevant to the question. You are asked to identify or click the appropriate area.

This format means that you need to understand the visual information as well as the project management concept being tested.

When practicing, focus on interpreting diagrams and visual information instead of trying to memorize where an answer might appear on the screen.

What are matching questions?

Matching questions require you to connect items from different lists. The task may involve identifying which concept, action, responsibility, or description belongs with another item.

A useful way to prepare is to understand relationships between project management concepts rather than studying each term in isolation.

For example

  • Match a project situation with an appropriate response.
  • Match a project management concept with its description.
  • Match an item with the corresponding category or outcome.

The examples above are illustrative only and are not actual PMI exam questions.

What are pull-down list questions?

Pull-down list questions require you to select a response from a drop-down list. The current 2026 Examination Content Outline identifies Pull-down List as one of the available PMP® question types.

The important point is that the interaction may look different from a traditional multiple-choice question even though the underlying task still requires you to identify the most appropriate answer.

Older PMI prototype exam materials documented other computer-based formats, including fill-in-the-blank questions. However, fill-in-the-blank is not listed as a question type in the current 2026 PMP® Examination Content Outline. For current preparation, use the 2026 ECO as the primary reference.

What is the PMP exam structure in 2026?

The current PMP® examination contains 180 questions. Of these, 170 are scored and 10 are pretest questions. The examination time is 240 minutes.

For computer-based exams, the current Examination Content Outline also identifies two 10-minute breaks. The exact placement and experience can depend on the examination delivery process.

Exam time240 minutes
Computer-based exam breaksTwo 10-minute breaks
Question formats Case or Scenario, Enhanced Matching, Graphic-Based Questions, Multiple-Choice Single Response, Multiple-Response, Point and Click, Matching, and Pull-down List

The PMP® exam also continues to assess People, Process, and Business Environment. The 2026 Examination Content Outline assigns 33% to People, 41% to Process, and 26% to Business Environment.

How should you prepare for different PMP question formats?

Preparing for the 2026 PMP® exam means practicing both knowledge and application. You should become comfortable moving between different question formats without allowing the visual layout to distract you from the underlying problem.

Preparation areaWhat to practice
Scenario analysisIdentify the situation, stakeholder needs, constraints, and appropriate next action.
Visual interpretationRead charts, graphs, diagrams, and project information presented visually.
Multiple responseEvaluate every option and determine which responses satisfy the question.
MatchingUnderstand relationships between concepts, actions, situations, and outcomes.
Interactive formatsPractice reading instructions carefully before selecting, matching, or identifying an answer.
Time managementPractice answering questions efficiently while leaving enough time to review flagged questions.

Your goal should not be to memorize a question format. Instead, build enough understanding and practice that you can recognize what the question is testing, identify the relevant information, eliminate unsuitable responses, and select the response that best fits the situation.
