How Fast Do You Get Your PMP® Result After Passing the Exam?
The Project Management Institute (PMI®) shows a preliminary score at the end of your exam and confirms the official result within 10 business days. Here is the full timeline, from result to certificate and badge.
In this guide
You have worked through the application, the study evenings and exam day itself. Now you want to know when you will find out whether you passed the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam, and when the certificate, badge and credential become real. This guide settles how fast the Project Management Institute (PMI) delivers your result, and what arrives, and when, once you have passed.
Quick answer
A candidate who takes the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam on a computer receives a preliminary score report at the end of the testing session. The Project Management Institute (PMI) treats that score as preliminary until PMI confirms the official result, and states that the official result is available no later than 10 business days after the exam date. After certification, PMI states that a Credly email with the digital badge follows within 1 to 2 business days.
| Awarding body | Project Management Institute (PMI) |
| Score at the end of the session | Score report on screen; preliminary until PMI confirms |
| Official result | Email notice; no later than 10 business days after the exam date |
| Result report | Overall pass or fail, plus diagnostic information for each domain |
| Certificate | Digital version available to download through the PMI certification portal |
| Digital badge | Credly email within 1 to 2 business days of earning certification |
| Certification Registry | Names of certification holders are listed automatically |
| Attempts | 3 attempts within the 1-year eligibility period |
| Renewal | 60 PDUs in each 3-year cycle |
How fast do you get your PMP result?
You see a preliminary score report when the testing session ends, and PMI confirms the official result no later than 10 business days after your exam date.
The PMI Certification Handbook states that, upon completing an exam on a computer, you receive a copy of the score report. The same Handbook adds that for the PMP, any score provided at the end of a testing session is “considered preliminary until the candidate receives notice from PMI that the result is official.”
PMI then emails you when your exam report is available online. That email is the official notice, and PMI states that it arrives no later than 10 business days after the exam date.
Should you treat the on-screen result as final?
No. Treat the on-screen result as preliminary and wait for PMI’s email before you announce anything.

What does the PMP result report show?
The report shows your overall pass or fail status, and PMI states that it also gives diagnostic information on your performance in each domain.
The PMP exam has three domains in 2026: People, Process and Business Environment. The domain feedback is designed to show where you were stronger and where you were weaker. If you pass, it is a useful record of the areas to keep sharp. If you do not pass, it tells you where to focus before the next attempt.
PMI makes the detailed report available online once the result is official. Keep the email that tells you the report is ready, because it is the first thing you will want to find later.
What happens after PMI confirms you passed?
Once PMI confirms the pass, three things follow: a digital certificate you can download, a digital badge from Credly, and a listing in the PMI Certification Registry.
| Step | What happens | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Preliminary result | Score report shown at the end of the session | Same day |
| 2. Official result | PMI emails you that the exam report is available online | No later than 10 business days after the exam date |
| 3. Digital badge | Credly emails you a link to accept the badge | Within 1 to 2 business days of earning certification |
| 4. Certificate | You download a digital version through the certification portal | After certification |
| 5. Registry listing | Your name is listed automatically in the PMI Certification Registry | Automatic; no application needed |
How do you claim the digital badge?
Click the accept link in the Credly email, then create a Credly account using the same email address as your PMI account. If no email arrives within 3 business days of earning your certification, PMI advises you to contact PMI or Credly support. The PMI digital badge page explains the steps.
Do you need to apply to be listed in the Registry?
No. The Certification Registry lists certification holders automatically. Employers and clients can check it through the PMI registry search.
Track your official result window
For planning only. PMI’s email is the official notice. Public holidays can change how business days are counted.
The preloaded example is an exam taken on a Wednesday with 3 business days already passed. PMI’s window closes on the Wednesday two weeks after the exam, so 7 business days remain.
What if you do not pass the PMP exam?
You can retake it, because PMI allows 3 attempts within your 1-year eligibility period.
The Handbook states that repayment of fees applies to the second and third attempts, so check the amount shown in your PMI account before you rebook. If all 3 attempts are unsuccessful, you must wait 1 year from the date of your last exam before you reapply.
Use the domain feedback in your result report to decide what to study next. Many learners find that a focused plan for the weakest domain is more useful than repeating the whole course. If you are still preparing, our guide on the PMP eligibility requirements and the PMP application process explain what the eligibility window means for your timeline.

What should you do after you pass the PMP exam?
Wait for the official notice, accept your badge, download your certificate, and plan how you will earn the 60 professional development units (PDUs) your certification needs.
PMP holders must earn 60 PDUs in each 3-year renewal cycle, and each PDU represents 1 hour spent on activities such as learning, teaching, presenting, reading or volunteering. Starting the habit early keeps the requirement small.
- Keep the PMI email that confirms your official result.
- Accept your Credly badge with the same email address as your PMI account.
- Download your digital certificate through the PMI certification portal.
- Update your resume and profile once the result is official.
- Note the start of your 3-year renewal cycle and plan your 60 PDUs.
If you are earlier in your journey, see the steps to become a certified PMP. PMI publishes the official procedures in the PMI Certification Handbook and on its PMP certification page.
