If you have heard colleagues talk about ISO 14001 and wondered what it actually asks you to do, this guide is for you. We explain the 2026 edition in plain language: what it is, how it works and what is new, without assuming you have audited anything before. If you want to become an auditor later, it also shows where the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course fits.
ISO 14001:2026 is the 2026 edition of the international standard for environmental management systems, titled Environmental management systems – Requirements with guidance for use. It gives any organization a framework to manage its environmental responsibilities and continually improve its environmental performance. ISO published it in April 2026, and it replaces ISO 14001:2015, which is now withdrawn.

What is ISO 14001:2026?
It is an international standard that tells an organization how to set up and run an environmental management system (EMS).
An EMS is simply the set of policies, processes and responsibilities an organization uses to understand its effect on the environment, meet its legal duties and improve over time. ISO 14001 does not set fixed pollution limits or tell you which technology to buy. Instead, it asks you to manage your own environmental risks in a structured, checkable way. ISO says more than 670,000 organizations worldwide were certified to ISO 14001 in 2024, according to the ISO Survey. For a first look at the EMS idea, see our article what is an ISO 14001 environmental management system.
Who is ISO 14001:2026 for?
It is for organizations of any size or sector that want to manage their environmental responsibilities in a systematic way.
A factory, a hospital, a construction firm and an office-based service company can all use it, because each has environmental aspects such as energy, waste, emissions or supply chain impacts. The standard is voluntary. An organization chooses whether to implement it, and whether to ask a certification body for an independent certificate. Many do it to meet customer expectations, manage compliance and reduce waste or energy use.

How does an environmental management system work?
It works as a cycle of Plan, Do, Check and Act, spread across 7 clauses that run from context to improvement.
The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle means you plan what to do, do it, check the results and act to improve. ISO 14001 spreads this across clauses 4 to 10. The table below puts each clause in plain language.
| Clause | Plain-language meaning |
|---|---|
| 4 Context | Understand your organization, what affects it and who cares about it |
| 5 Leadership | Top management leads, sets the environmental policy and gives people roles |
| 6 Planning | Identify environmental aspects, legal duties, risks and opportunities, and set objectives |
| 7 Support | Provide resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information |
| 8 Operation | Control day-to-day activities and prepare for emergencies |
| 9 Performance evaluation | Monitor results, run internal audits and hold management review |
| 10 Improvement | Fix problems, take corrective action and keep improving |
Three ideas sit at the heart of the system. An environmental aspect and impact is an activity that touches the environment and the change it causes. An environmental policy is the commitment from top management. Environmental performance evaluation is how you measure whether it is working.
ISO 14001 does not tell you how clean you must be; it asks you to prove you manage your environmental risks.
What is new in ISO 14001:2026 compared with the 2015 edition?
The 2026 edition refines the 2015 edition rather than rewriting it, with a stronger focus on climate, lifecycle thinking and change management.
According to the CQI and IRCA summary of the key updates, these are the main changes:
| Area | What changed |
|---|---|
| Context (clause 4) | Wider environmental conditions, including climate change, pollution, biodiversity and resource availability |
| Lifecycle | Lifecycle perspective strengthened across all stages |
| Aspects (clause 6.1.2) | Evaluate separately for normal operations, abnormal operations and emergencies |
| Risks and change (6.1.4 and 6.3) | New clause on risks and opportunities, and a new clause on change management |
| Documented information | Wording moves from “retained and maintained” to “available” |
| Operation (clause 8) | Stronger control of externally provided processes and services across their lifecycle |
| Performance evaluation (clause 9) | Defined internal audit objectives, and management review split into sub-clauses |
The good news for beginners is that the structure is familiar. The standard keeps the Harmonized Structure used by other ISO management system standards and the PDCA cycle, and CQI and IRCA note that organizations may keep existing procedures and manuals if they still work. See our articles on internal audit in ISO 14001:2026 and documented information in ISO 14001:2026 for two of the changed areas.
What about the transition from ISO 14001:2015?
CQI and IRCA report that a three-year migration period is planned for organizations certified to ISO 14001:2015.
ISO now shows ISO 14001:2015 and its 2024 climate action amendment as withdrawn. If your organization is already certified, talk to your certification body about its exact transition arrangements and audit timing. If you are new to ISO 14001, start directly with the 2026 edition.
Where should a beginner start with ISO 14001:2026?
Start by understanding your context, writing your policy and identifying your environmental aspects and legal duties.
- Understand your organization and what affects its environmental performance.
- Get top management to approve an environmental policy.
- Identify your environmental aspects and which ones are significant.
- List your legal and other compliance obligations.
- Set objectives and put operational controls and emergency arrangements in place.
- Run an internal audit and hold a management review, then fix what you find.

Who needs ISO 14001:2026 auditor training?
Internal auditors, consultants, compliance managers and professionals who want to audit environmental management systems benefit from it.
Understanding the standard is the first step, and auditing it is a separate skill. Auditors collect objective evidence, judge it against the standard and report findings. If that is your goal, our ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course covers it, and our guide on audit questions during ISO 14001:2026 audits shows what auditors ask.
EMS readiness check
For planning only. Tick what your organization already has in place. This is a self-assessment, not a certification assessment.
3 of 8 elements in place: early stage
Start with your context, policy, environmental aspects and compliance obligations, then build objectives and controls.
Preloaded example: policy, aspects and compliance obligations are ticked, which gives 3 of 8. These are the usual first building blocks, so the next focus would be objectives, operational controls and emergency arrangements.
