Failed the LEED Green Associate Exam? Retake Rules and Next Steps

August 25, 2026 Posted by 3FOLD Exam Tips, LEED, LEED GA No comments

You can retake it. There is no cap on the number of attempts. You pay the registration fee again for each one, and after three unsuccessful attempts within a 12-month period you must wait 90 calendar days before registering again.

That is the whole rule set. If you have just come out of the exam, read the rest of this when you are ready — but the answer to the question you searched is yes, you can sit it again, and soon.

The rules, precisely

Limit on attemptsNone. You may sit the exam as many times as you need to
Cost of a retakeThe full registration fee, every time. There is no discounted retake rate
Waiting period, first and second failureNone. You can register again straight away
After three unsuccessful attempts in 12 months90 calendar days before you may submit a new registration and payment
When the 12 months startsOn the date of your first failed attempt
When the 90 days startsOn the date of your third unsuccessful attempt

Note how the two clocks work, because it is easy to misread. The 12-month window runs from your first failure, not from your registration. The 90-day wait runs from your third failure, not from when you try to book.

Fees are on our LEED Green Associate exam cost page.

First, read your score report properly

This is the most valuable thing you will do this week, and most candidates skip it.

Your score report arrives by email within 24 hours of the exam and gives you your scaled score. It does not give you a question-by-question review — GBCI states that it does not release exam content or answers or allow candidates to review proprietary content under any circumstances. So do not plan on reviewing the paper, because you cannot. What is left is the better tool anyway: timed practice, one domain at a time, scored. You can run it repeatedly, and you can run it before the next exam rather than after it.

Those two situations call for completely different responses, and treating them the same is why second attempts fail.

What the report showsWhat it meansWhat to do
Consistently near the line across most domainsYour knowledge is broad but thin, or timing cost you marksTimed full-length practice, repeatedly, until pace stops being the variable
Strong in most, weak in two or threeSpecific gaps, not a general problemRebuild those domains from the ground up. Ignore the ones you already have
Weak nearly everywhereNot enough preparation, or preparation from the wrong materialStart again properly, and check your material is written for LEED v5

The two reasons people fail

In our experience with candidates, failures cluster into two causes, and neither is about intelligence.

1. Studying from material written for an older version of LEED

This is the big one right now, and it is cruel because the candidate did the work. LEED v5 changed what the exam weights and, in places, what the right answer is. Embodied carbon carries far more weight than it used to. Equity and resilience are examinable content rather than background. And the exam’s question format changed — every question now has exactly one correct answer, so any practice material still giving you “choose the best three” items was written for a version of the exam you did not sit.

If your study guide does not say v5 on it, that is very likely your answer. Start with LEED GA v5 exam changes.

2. Reading, but never rehearsing

Reading a study guide produces a feeling of familiarity that is easily mistaken for knowledge. The exam does not test familiarity; it asks you to choose between four plausible options at speed. Those are different skills, and the only way to build the second is to practise under time.

If you did not sit a full-length timed paper before your attempt, you met the exam’s pace for the first time on the day. That alone loses marks.

What to do in the next fortnight

  1. Run timed practice one domain at a time and score each set, then write down your two weakest domains.
  2. Check your study material is written for LEED v5. If it is not, replace it before you revise another page.
  3. Rebuild the weak domains from teaching material, not from question banks — questions test knowledge, they do not build it. Our practice question sets link to a teaching page for each of the eight domains.
  4. Then drill those domains with practice questions until you are consistently right for the right reason, rather than right by elimination.
  5. Sit a full-length timed paper. Our 50-question mock exam is free.
  6. Book only when your practice scores are consistently comfortable. Not adequate. Comfortable.

Should you retake it immediately?

There is no waiting period after a first or second failure, so you could book for next week. Usually you should not.

Retaking quickly makes sense only if you were very close and your problem was pace — in which case the knowledge is there and a fortnight of timed practice will fix it. If the gap was knowledge rather than timing, sitting again before you have rebuilt anything just costs you another registration fee to confirm what you already know.

The honest calculation: a retake costs the full exam fee. Time is the cheaper input. Two more weeks of properly targeted revision is almost always the better investment than two more weeks of waiting for an appointment you are not ready for.

A note on how common this is

Failing a professional exam feels singular and is not. The LEED Green Associate is a real exam with a real standard, and plenty of capable people working in green building do not pass first time — frequently because they assumed their day job would carry them, or because they revised from whatever came up in a search.

The credential does not record how many attempts it took. Nobody who sees LEED Green Associate after your name will ever know, or ask.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I take the LEED Green Associate exam?
There is no limit on the number of attempts. After three unsuccessful attempts within a 12-month period you must wait 90 calendar days before registering again.

How long do I have to wait to retake the exam?
There is no waiting period after a first or second failure. The 90-day wait applies only after a third unsuccessful attempt within 12 months, counted from the date of that third attempt.

Do I have to pay again to retake it?
Yes. Every attempt requires the full registration fee. There is no discounted retake rate.

Does my score report tell me what I got wrong?
No. It gives you your scaled score. GBCI states that it does not release exam content or answers or allow candidates to review proprietary content under any circumstances, so there is no question-by-question review to work from.

Will anyone know I failed the first time?
No. The credential does not record the number of attempts.

Getting it right on the next attempt

3FOLD TRAINING prepares candidates across all eight domains in LEED Green Associate training, written to LEED v5 — which matters most to candidates whose first attempt was undone by out-of-date material. Tell us how your timed domain sets came out and we will tell you honestly whether a course is what you need. Use the course enquiry form.
