Not motivational advice. Ten things drawn from where candidates actually lose marks. The first four are about how you study, the next three about what you study, and the last three about the two hours in the room.

How you study
1. Test yourself instead of re-reading
Re-reading a chapter produces a strong feeling of knowing, and that feeling is not knowledge. It is recognition — you recognise the words when you see them again. The exam does not show you the chapter. It shows you a question and gives you seventy-two seconds.
Close the page and answer questions instead. It will feel worse and work better. Every study session should end with questions rather than reading.
2. Space it out
An hour on most days beats one long weekend session, and it is not about willpower. Material reviewed at intervals moves into long-term memory; material crammed does not, which is why cramming feels effective the same evening and hollow four days later.
If your week collapses, protect five minutes of vocabulary rather than abandoning the day entirely. Momentum is cheaper to keep than to rebuild.
3. Go back to the concept, not the answer
When you get a question wrong, the instinct is to read the explanation, nod, and move on. That teaches you that question.
Go back to the teaching page for the domain and rebuild the idea instead. That teaches you the next question too, and the exam will not repeat the one you just saw.
4. Track your weak domains in writing
After every practice set, write down which domain cost you marks. Two weeks later you will have a list, and the list will surprise you — it is almost never the domain you assumed.
The pattern we see most often in candidates who do not pass is not that they knew too little overall — it is that they were strong in six domains, let the average reassure them, and never repaired the other two.

5. Weight your time the way the exam weights its questions
USGBC publishes how many of the 85 scored questions come from each domain, which is unusually transparent and routinely ignored.

6. Learn the confusable pairs as pairs
A large share of questions turn on two terms that sound related. Learn them together, in both directions, and the whole category of question stops being dangerous.

7. Check everything you study says v5
This is the tip that saves whole attempts. LEED v5 changed what the exam weights and, in places, what the right answer is. A candidate who prepares diligently from a LEED v4 guide will walk in confident and be wrong about specific things.
A thirty-second test: open any practice questions you are using. If they ask you to select more than one answer, they do not match the current exam — every LEED v5 question has exactly one correct answer — and material that is wrong about the format is unlikely to be right about the content. The two hours in the room
8. Answer everything, immediately, and flag what you are unsure of
There is no negative marking, so a blank question can only lose you a mark and a guess can only gain one. You can change answers, skip questions and flag them for review right up until you submit.
So: read, answer, flag if unsure, move on. Come back with whatever time remains. Running out of time is usually a pacing problem rather than a knowledge problem — it happens to candidates who refuse to move past a question they cannot crack.
9. Watch the two-thirds mark
1 minute 12 seconds per question is the average, so two thirds of the way through the time you should be two thirds of the way through the paper. You do not need to track every question, but you do need one checkpoint: with 40 minutes remaining you should be at about question 67. If you are well short of that, speed up deliberately rather than hoping it evens out.
10. Eliminate rather than select
Every question has exactly one correct answer, which makes elimination clean. Find the option that is clearly wrong and remove it. Then the next. Two options usually fall away immediately, and the real decision is between the remaining two — which is where the confusable pairs from tip six earn their keep.
When the last two both look plausible, ask which one the domain would actually prioritise. LEED consistently rewards avoiding the problem over treating it: reduce before you recycle, reduce demand before you find new water, reduce trips before you clean up the vehicles, control the source before you filter the air. That principle resolves a surprising number of final-two decisions.
One thing that is not a tip
Do not book the exam to motivate yourself. It works for a few people and is expensive for the rest, because every attempt costs the full registration fee. Book on evidence — when you are scoring consistently well on timed papers you have not seen before, across all eight domains.
