Energy and Atmosphere is the joint largest knowledge domain on the LEED Green Associate exam at 15 of the 100 questions, and it carries more points than any other credit category. It covers building loads and the envelope, efficiency, commissioning, refrigerants, renewable energy and decarbonization. These 15 questions test the lot.
Two things make this domain harder than its size suggests. It is technical, so it rewards understanding over memorisation. And the "Atmosphere" half — refrigerants, global warming potential, greenhouse gases — catches candidates who assume the category is only about energy.
What this domain covers
The exam specification splits Energy and Atmosphere into five areas: building loads, including the envelope and how space is used; energy efficiency, including modelling, passive design and HVAC; alternative and renewable energy, including green power, storage and renewable energy certificates; energy performance management, covering metering, benchmarking, building automation and commissioning; and environmental concerns, covering electrification, decarbonization, global warming potential, refrigerants and ozone depletion.

Where candidates lose marks in this domain
- Forgetting the "Atmosphere" half. Refrigerants, global warming potential and ozone depletion are all in scope and are all easy marks once you expect them.
- Confusing the three types of commissioning. Building enclosure, monitoring-based and retro-commissioning are distinct.
- Confusing demand with consumption. Peak demand is a moment; consumption is a total.
- Assuming renewables come first. Efficiency comes first, every time.
- Mixing on-site renewables with renewable energy certificates. Both count as green power; only one generates electricity at the building.

Frequently asked questions
How many Energy and Atmosphere questions are on the exam?
15 of the 100, joint largest with LEED Process.
Do I need to do energy calculations on the Green Associate exam?
No. The Green Associate exam tests concepts and terminology, not calculations. Calculation-heavy content belongs to the LEED AP specialty exams.
Why does Energy and Atmosphere carry so many points?
Because credit weighting follows environmental and human health impact, and building energy use is the largest single lever a project has over carbon emissions.
Turning practice into a pass
3FOLD TRAINING devotes a full module to Energy and Atmosphere in LEED Green Associate training, aligned to LEED v5. If you are going on to the specialty exam, LEED AP BD+C training takes the same material considerably deeper. Ask us through the course enquiry form.
