How do you register for the LEED Green Associate exam, step by step?

You register on the Credential Dashboard, schedule through GBCI Prometric, keep your confirmation number and bring the right ID.

The steps below come from the USGBC LEED v5 exam information and the USGBC exam appointments page. Before you start, check current eligibility on the USGBC credential pages, as our guide on LEED Green Associate requirements explains. A note on terms: buildings and projects are certified, and people hold credentials. Our guide on the difference between a training certificate and a credential explains why the exam, not a course, earns the credential. The table below summarizes six points candidates ask about most.

How do you schedule the exam appointment?

You schedule through GBCI Prometric, at a test center or remotely.

According to the USGBC exam appointments page, after you register you go to GBCI Prometric and click Schedule under either the Test Center Exam or the Remote Exam heading. You can also log in to your credentials account and use the scheduling button. You need your EID and the first four letters of your last name. If Prometric asks for a test sponsor, select Green Business Certification Inc. or GBCI. Once the exam is scheduled, you receive a 16-digit confirmation number, and the page tells candidates to record it, because you need it to confirm, cancel or reschedule. To switch from a test center to an online exam, you first cancel your original appointment and then schedule the online exam.

What do you need on exam day?

You need valid ID whose name matches your registration exactly.

According to the USGBC exam appointments page, your ID must have your name printed in Roman characters and match your exam registration exactly. It must be valid, in its original form, and include a recent, recognizable photo. Read the full list of ID requirements on that page, and contact GBCI well before your appointment if your ID does not qualify. The page lists a deadline for that, so check it. Our guide on LEED training course versus self-study and our article on what a LEED exam question actually tests help you prepare for the exam itself.

What if you need to reschedule or cancel?

You can change your appointment up to a point, and fees and deadlines apply.

  • You may reschedule or cancel up to 45 days before your exam without a fee.
  • Closer to the date, fees apply, so check the current amounts on the official page.
  • You cannot reschedule or cancel after midnight on the third day before your appointment.
  • Missing the exam, or not changing it in time, forfeits the registration fee.
  • You need your 16-digit confirmation number and the first four letters of your last name to make changes.

These points come from the USGBC exam appointments page. If you miss an appointment, contact Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) to submit a new registration, and if you need more time, ask GBCI about a courtesy extension. After you pass, credentials run on two-year cycles, as our guide on LEED credential recertification explains. See the USGBC LEED v5 overview for the wider picture.
