There are no prerequisites. No degree, no professional qualification, no work experience, no prior credential, and no requirement to take any course. Anyone can register for the LEED Green Associate exam. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian contacts GBCI to complete a consent form. That is the entire list.
This surprises people, because most professional credentials gate entry. LEED Green Associate deliberately does not — it is designed as the entry point to green building, and gating the entry point would defeat the purpose.
What is actually required

What is recommended but not required
GBCI recommends that candidates have exposure to LEED and green building concepts beforehand — through educational courses, volunteering or work experience.
Read that carefully. It is a recommendation about preparation, not an eligibility condition. Nobody checks it, nothing is verified, and no evidence is submitted. It is GBCI saying, reasonably, that walking in cold is unwise.
The same applies to study material. USGBC names four references used to build the exam and says candidates are “encouraged to review” them. Encouraged. There is no required book and no required course.

What changes for LEED AP
The advanced credential does have a requirement, and it catches people out.
You must hold an active LEED Green Associate credential when you register for a LEED AP with specialty exam — unless you take both together as a combined exam, which waives the prerequisite because both parts are sat in one appointment.
Two consequences worth planning around. If your Green Associate has lapsed, you must deal with that before registering for the AP exam. And “active” means maintained, so the continuing education you agreed to at the very beginning becomes part of the cost of reaching LEED AP. More in what is a LEED Accredited Professional.
Should you sit it, though?
Being allowed to and being ready to are different questions. There is no eligibility barrier, so the real question is whether the credential is useful to you and whether you can prepare properly.
