Does ISO 14001 Certification Expire? Renewal Explained
How long an ISO 14001 certificate lasts, what surveillance audits check, how renewal works and what to do to stay certified.

An ISO 14001 certificate is not a permanent award. It confirms that an environmental management system (EMS) met the standard when an independent certification body audited it, and the certification body keeps checking that it still does. This guide explains how long a certificate usually lasts, what surveillance audits and recertification involve and how to stay ready. It is for managers, environmental leads and learners preparing for the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course.
Yes, an ISO 14001 certificate expires. It is typically valid for a three-year cycle. During the cycle the certification body carries out surveillance audits, usually once a year, to check that the system still conforms. Before the certificate expires, a recertification audit reviews the whole system so the certificate can be renewed. The exact dates and rules are set by the certification body and shown on your certificate and contract.
| Standard | ISO 14001, Environmental management systems |
| Certificate issued by | A certification body, not ISO and not a training provider |
| Typical validity | A three-year cycle, confirmed on your certificate |
| Between audits | Surveillance audits, typically annual |
| Before expiry | A recertification audit to renew |

Does ISO 14001 certification expire?
Yes, it expires at the end of its cycle unless the certification body renews it.
The certificate carries an issue date, an expiry date and the scope it covers. Certification is a service from a certification body, so the validity and the audit schedule are set in its rules and in your contract with it. ISO publishes the standard but does not issue certificates, and a training provider such as 3FOLD Training does not certify organizations. We train auditors; certification bodies certify organizations. Our guide to how long ISO 14001 certification takes covers the road to the first certificate.
What does the ISO 14001 certificate cycle look like?
A typical cycle starts with the certification audit, adds surveillance audits and ends with a recertification audit.
| Point in the cycle | Audit | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Start | Certification audit, then the certificate is issued | Confirm the system meets the standard |
| About one year later | First surveillance audit | Check the system is still working and findings were closed |
| About two years later | Second surveillance audit | Check continued conformity and improvement |
| Before the cycle ends | Recertification audit | Review the whole system so the certificate can be renewed |
This is the common pattern, not a promise about your contract. Your certification body sets the exact dates, the audit length and how it handles late or rescheduled audits.
A certificate shows the system worked when it was audited, so the system has to keep working.

What is an ISO 14001 surveillance audit?
A surveillance audit is a shorter, regular audit that checks the system still conforms.
It does not repeat the whole certification audit. The auditor samples parts of the system, follows up on earlier findings, checks changes since the last visit and looks at how the organization uses its certificate. Expect questions about the internal audit program, management review, objectives, legal compliance and corrective actions. Our guides to how to conduct an ISO 14001 internal audit and management review in ISO 14001:2026 help you prepare.
What is ISO 14001 recertification?
Recertification is a fuller audit before the cycle ends, so the certificate can be renewed.
The auditor reviews the performance of the system over the whole cycle, not only the last year. The review looks at whether the system is still effective, whether it has stayed relevant to the organization’s aspects and obligations and whether it keeps improving. Plan for recertification early, because findings need time to close and the certificate should not lapse. Ask your certification body when it schedules the audit and what it expects you to submit.
What happens if you miss an audit or have serious findings?
The certification body may suspend, reduce or withdraw the certificate, following its own rules.
- Missed or postponed audits. A certificate can be put at risk if audits are not completed in the agreed window.
- Serious or unresolved findings. Nonconformities must be corrected, and their causes removed, in the time allowed. See our guide to ISO 14001 nonconformity and corrective action.
- Misuse of the certificate. Using the certificate or logo outside its scope can lead to action.
- Changes the body is not told about. Major changes to sites or activities may need notice, so read your contract.
The rules differ by certification body, so read the terms you signed and ask the body if anything is unclear.
How do you stay ready for surveillance and renewal?
Keep the system alive all year, not only before the audit.
- Run internal audits on schedule and act on what they find.
- Hold management review and record decisions and actions.
- Close corrective actions and check that they worked.
- Keep legal compliance current and review it regularly. See our guide to ISO 14001 compliance evaluation.
- Track changes to processes, sites and obligations so the system stays relevant.

How does ISO 14001:2026 affect an existing certificate?
ISO 14001:2026 replaces ISO 14001:2015, and your certification body sets how certified organizations move across.
If your certificate refers to the 2015 edition, ask your certification body how and when it expects the move to the 2026 edition, and plan the update inside your audit cycle. We do not quote transition dates here, because they depend on the certification body and the accreditation rules it follows. Our guides to what ISO 14001:2026 is and ISO 14001:2026 transition training explain the change.
Certificate cycle planner
For planning only. Enter the date your certificate was issued to see a typical three-year cycle. Your certificate and certification body decide the real dates.
Typical cycle from 15 March 2026
First surveillance audit: around 15 March 2027. Second surveillance audit: around 15 March 2028. Recertification audit: complete before 15 March 2029.
Preloaded example: a certificate issued on 15 March 2026. Change the date to see another cycle. These dates are a typical pattern, not your contract.
Frequently asked questions
Does ISO 14001 certification expire?
Yes. An ISO 14001 certificate is issued for a limited cycle, typically three years, and it expires unless the certification body renews it after a recertification audit. The certificate shows its issue date, expiry date and scope, and the rules are set by the certification body.
How long is an ISO 14001 certificate valid?
An ISO 14001 certificate is typically valid for a three-year cycle. The exact validity, the audit dates and the rules for late or rescheduled audits are set by the certification body and shown on your certificate and contract.
What is a surveillance audit in ISO 14001?
A surveillance audit is a shorter, regular audit, typically once a year, in which the certification body samples the environmental management system, follows up earlier findings and checks that the system still conforms to ISO 14001. It does not repeat the full certification audit.
What is an ISO 14001 recertification audit?
A recertification audit is a fuller review carried out before the certificate expires. The auditor looks at the performance of the system over the whole cycle, whether it is still effective and relevant, and whether it keeps improving, so the certificate can be renewed.
What happens if an ISO 14001 certificate expires or an audit is missed?
The certification body may suspend, reduce or withdraw the certificate, following its own rules. Missed audits and unresolved nonconformities are common causes, so read your contract and talk to your certification body early if a date is at risk.
Does ISO 14001:2026 affect my existing ISO 14001 certificate?
ISO 14001:2026 replaces ISO 14001:2015. If your certificate refers to the 2015 edition, ask your certification body how and when it expects you to move to the 2026 edition, because transition arrangements depend on the certification body and the accreditation rules.
Who issues and renews ISO 14001 certificates?
Certification bodies issue and renew ISO 14001 certificates after auditing the organization. ISO publishes the standard but does not certify, and a training provider such as 3FOLD Training trains auditors but does not certify organizations. We prepare you for the exam; CQI and IRCA examine and certify auditors.
