How Long Does ISO 45001 Certification Take?
There is no single answer, but the stages are clear and a few factors decide whether the road is shorter or longer. Here is how to plan.

“How long will it take?” is the first question most organizations ask about ISO 45001 certification, and the honest answer is that it depends. A small single-site business with a tidy system and a committed owner moves differently from a multi-site operation with high-risk work starting from nothing. This guide explains the stages, the factors that change the pace and how to plan without inventing a date. It is for managers, health and safety and quality leads and learners preparing for the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) ISO 45001 Lead Auditor course.
ISO 45001 certification has no fixed duration. The time depends on how much of an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system already exists, the size and complexity of the organization, the number of sites and contractors, the level of hazard and risk, the legal duties involved, how well workers take part, management commitment and the certification body’s availability. Plan by working through the stages: gap analysis, building the system, running it, internal audit, management review and the certification audits. Ask your chosen certification body for its own timeline.
| Standard | ISO 45001:2018, Occupational health and safety management systems |
| Typical stages | Gap analysis, build, run, internal audit, management review, stage 1 and stage 2 audits |
| Main time drivers | Starting point, size, sites, hazards, legal duties, worker participation, resources and commitment |
| Who sets audit dates | The certification body, within its scheduling |
| After certification | Surveillance audits and recertification over a multi-year cycle |

Why is there no fixed answer to how long ISO 45001 certification takes?
Because the timeline is driven by the organization’s starting point, not by the standard.
ISO 45001 does not set a number of weeks or months. It sets requirements, and an independent certification body checks that the system meets them and works in practice. An organization with a hazard register, defined responsibilities and records of incident follow-up has less to build. An organization starting from scratch has to create the policy, identify hazards, assess risks, map legal duties, set objectives, involve workers, train people and then run the system long enough to produce evidence. We do not quote a figure here, because any number would mislead. Ask your certification body and any consultant for a timeline based on your situation. Our guide to how an ISO 45001 audit works from start to finish shows what auditors look for.
What are the stages of ISO 45001 certification?
The stages run from a gap analysis through building and running the system to the certification audits.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Scope and gap analysis | Decide the scope and compare what exists with the standard |
| Build the system | Policy, hazard identification and risk assessment, legal requirements, objectives, controls, emergency plans, worker participation, roles and training |
| Run the system | Operate the controls and keep records so there is evidence to audit |
| Internal audit | Check the system against the standard and the organization’s own rules |
| Management review | Top management reviews performance and decides on actions |
| Stage 1 audit | The certification body reviews readiness and documents |
| Stage 2 audit | The certification body audits implementation on site |
| Close findings and certify | Nonconformities are corrected and the certification decision is made |
These stages are common across certification bodies, but names and details vary, so confirm them with the body you choose. Our guides to the ISO 45001 audit plan and checklist and auditing management review in ISO 45001 cover two stages in more detail.
Certification measures a system that is working, so the system has to run before it can be audited.

What affects the ISO 45001 certification timeline?
The main drivers are the starting point, size, sites, hazards, legal duties, worker participation, resources and commitment.
| Factor | Tends to shorten the timeline | Tends to lengthen it |
|---|---|---|
| Existing systems | An existing management system such as quality or environmental | Nothing documented yet |
| Management commitment | Top management engaged, with a named owner | No owner, or limited management time |
| Size and sites | One site, simple operations | Several sites, or many contractors on site |
| Hazards and risk | Hazards identified and risks assessed | High-risk work such as heights, confined spaces or hazardous substances |
| Legal duties | A register of legal and other requirements in place | Unclear or unmapped obligations |
| Worker participation | Consultation already works in practice | No routes for workers to take part |
| Certification body | Early booking and flexible dates | Late booking or limited availability |
Use the checker at the end of this page to see which of these apply to you. It shows a general outlook, not a number of months. Our guide to the hierarchy of controls in ISO 45001 and our guide to auditing evaluation of compliance cover two of the biggest workloads.
What takes longer than organizations expect?
Common delays are hazard identification, the legal register, worker participation, building evidence and management time.
- Hazard identification and risk assessment. Covering every activity, including non-routine work and contractors, takes longer than writing the policy.
- The legal register. Finding and understanding every legal and other requirement takes time.
- Building records. The system needs a period of operation, so there is something real to audit.
- Internal audit findings. Nonconformities found internally must be corrected, and the cause removed, before certification.
- Management time. Review meetings and decisions wait for busy leaders.
Treat this list as a prompt for your own plan, not a prediction.
How can you plan a realistic ISO 45001 timeline?
Start with a gap analysis, name an owner and ask the certification body early.
- Name an owner with the authority and time to lead the work. See the role of top management in ISO 45001.
- Run a gap analysis so you know what exists and what is missing.
- List the work by stage and give each task a person and a date.
- Train your people, including internal auditors, before you need them.
- Ask the certification body for its scheduling and audit stages, and book early.

What happens after ISO 45001 certification?
The certification body returns for surveillance audits and recertification over a multi-year cycle.
Certification is not a one-off event. The certification body typically schedules surveillance audits between the main audits and a recertification audit at the end of the cycle. The exact pattern is set by the certification body, so confirm it before you sign. An organization that keeps its internal audits, management reviews and continual improvement alive finds these visits easier.
How does worker participation affect the timeline?
It can add time, because consultation has to work in practice and not only on paper.
ISO 45001 puts weight on the consultation and participation of workers, including non-managerial workers. Setting up routes for workers to take part in hazard identification, incident investigation and objectives takes time, and auditors will interview workers to check it. Start early and keep records of how workers were involved. Our guide to worker consultation and participation in ISO 45001 explains what auditors look for.

Outlook: mixed. Some factors help and some slow you down. (2 helping, 1 slowing)
Address first: several sites or many contractors. Working in your favor: an existing management system to build on; engaged top management with a named owner. Ask your certification body for its own timeline.

Frequently asked questions
How long does ISO 45001 certification take?
ISO 45001 certification has no fixed duration, because the timeline depends on the organization’s starting point, size, number of sites, hazards and risks, legal duties, worker participation and management commitment, plus the certification body’s scheduling. Ask your certification body for a timeline based on your situation.
What affects the ISO 45001 certification timeline?
The main factors are whether a management system already exists, how engaged top management is, the size and number of sites, how many contractors and high-risk activities are involved, how well legal requirements are mapped, whether worker consultation works in practice, how competent the team is and how early the certification body is booked.
What are the stages of ISO 45001 certification?
The stages are scope and gap analysis, building the OH&S management system, running it to create records, an internal audit, a management review, a stage 1 audit, a stage 2 audit and closing any nonconformities before the certification decision. Certification bodies may name the stages differently.
Can a company speed up ISO 45001 certification?
A company can avoid delays by naming an owner, running a gap analysis early, involving workers from the start, training its people and booking the certification body in good time. It cannot skip the need for the system to run and produce evidence, because the audit checks that the system works in practice.
Does worker participation affect ISO 45001 certification time?
It can. ISO 45001 puts weight on the consultation and participation of workers, and auditors interview workers to check it. Setting up routes for workers to take part in hazard identification and incident investigation takes time, so start early and keep records.
How long does an ISO 45001 certificate last?
Certification typically runs on a multi-year cycle, with surveillance audits between the main audits and a recertification audit at the end. The exact cycle is set by the certification body, so confirm it before you sign.
Do I need trained auditors to get ISO 45001 certification?
