Not passing a LEED exam is disappointing, and the useful next step is a calm review of what to change. This article looks at what the USGBC candidate handbooks say about retaking the exam, and then offers a practical way to decide what to change. It uses the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook, the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook and the USGBC LEED v5 exam information. The study suggestions are our own and not USGBC or Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) rules, and the article does not state fees, scores, exam dates, waiting-period details, eligibility rules or pass rates, so check the official pages before you book.

Quick answer

Both LEED candidate handbooks say you may register and pay again if you do not pass, with a fee for each attempt and a waiting period after repeated unsuccessful attempts. The handbooks we read do not describe domain-level feedback, so you often need your own review. Write down what you remember, map it to the eight knowledge domains, separate knowledge gaps from problems with scenario questions, and change one or two things before you book again.

What do the sources say about retaking the LEED exam?

You may register and pay again, and the details sit in the handbook.

The LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook and the LEED AP with Specialty Candidate Handbook both say that if you do not pass, you may register and pay again in the same way as your first registration. They say candidates pay the registration fee for each attempt, and they describe a waiting period that applies after repeated unsuccessful attempts within a set period. This article does not state the fee or the waiting-period details, so read the retake section of the current handbook before you book. The USGBC LEED v5 exam information sets out the current status of the LEED v5 exams. The table below sets out the main points. Our guide on whether the LEED Green Associate exam is difficult and our guide on the LEED exam question test cover the exam itself.

What can your score report tell you?

Read it closely, and do not expect more than it shows.

The Green Associate handbook says the result is shown at the end of the exam and that a score report is emailed after your session. The handbooks we read do not describe domain-level feedback or diagnostic reports, so check your own report to see what it contains. They also say GBCI does not modify exam scores under any conditions, and the AP with Specialty handbook describes a content appeal route if you believe a question was faulty. Because the report may not show weak areas, your own notes from the exam day are valuable, and it helps to write them down soon after the exam while they are fresh.

  • Read the score report and note what it does and does not show
  • Write down topics you remember from the exam while they are fresh
  • Do not expect the handbook to list your weak domains
  • Read the content appeal section if you believe a question was faulty

How do you decide what to change?

Separate what you did not know from how you answered, then choose one or two changes.

These steps are our own suggestions and not USGBC rules. First, map what you remember to the eight knowledge domains in the handbook: LEED Process, Integrative Process Planning and Assessments, Location and Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. Second, ask whether the gaps were knowledge, such as a credit you had not studied, or reading, such as a scenario you misread. Third, think about the exam day, including time, language and format, because the Green Associate exam is currently English only according to the handbook. Our guide on why candidates struggle with LEED scenario questions explains the question style.

Change what the review showed, and test it before you book again.

What should you change in how you prepare?

Match the change to the gap, and avoid changing everything at once.

If the gaps were in knowledge, return to the handbook domains and our guide on the LEED Green Associate syllabus. If the gaps were in question style, add practice questions and full-length mock exams, starting with our page of LEED Green Associate practice questions. If you studied alone and felt unsure of the plan, compare options in our guide on LEED training course versus self-study. A training certificate is not a credential, so see our guide on the difference between a LEED training certificate and a credential. A course prepares you for the exam, and the exam result decides the credential.

  • Knowledge gap: revisit the domains and the handbook
  • Question-style gap: practise scenario questions and mocks
  • No clear plan: compare a structured course with self-study
  • Exam-day factors: check the format, language and timing

How do you plan your next attempt?

Read the retake rules, choose your changes and book when practice is steady.

Start by reading the retake section of the LEED Green Associate Candidate Handbook, and check the USGBC LEED v5 exam information for the current exam status. Eligibility and registration rules are set by USGBC and GBCI and this article does not state them, so see our guide on how to register for the LEED Green Associate exam. Choose one or two changes, test them with practice questions, and book again when your practice results are steady. The courses are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams.

Frequently asked questions

Can you retake the LEED exam if you do not pass?

Yes. Both LEED candidate handbooks say that if you do not pass, you may register and pay again in the same way as your first registration. Check the current handbook for the rules that apply to your exam.

Is there a waiting period before a LEED exam retake?

The LEED candidate handbooks describe a waiting period that applies after repeated unsuccessful attempts within a set period. This article does not state the details, so read the retake section of the current handbook before you book.

Does each LEED exam attempt need a new fee?

The LEED candidate handbooks say candidates must pay the exam registration fee for each attempt. This article does not state amounts, so check the current fee with GBCI.

Does the LEED score report show which domains you missed?

The LEED handbooks we read do not describe domain-level feedback, and they do not say what a score report contains beyond the result. Check your own report and the handbook to see what is provided.

Can GBCI change a LEED exam score?

The LEED handbooks say GBCI does not modify exam scores under any conditions. The LEED AP with Specialty handbook describes a content appeal route, so read it if you think a question was faulty.

How do you decide what to change before retaking the LEED exam?

Write down what you remember, map it to the eight LEED knowledge domains, and separate knowledge gaps from problems reading scenario questions. Then change one or two things and test them with practice questions.

Is the LEED exam based on LEED v5?

The LEED Green Associate handbook says the exam is based on the LEED v5 rating system. Check the USGBC LEED v5 exam information for the status of each exam, because the AP with Specialty exams were in beta when we checked.

Should you take a LEED course again before a retake?

That depends on what your LEED review shows. If the gaps are in knowledge, a course can help, and if they are in question style, more practice questions and mock exams may help. A course prepares you, and the exam result decides the credential.

Is a LEED training certificate a credential?

No. A training certificate shows you completed a LEED course, while a LEED credential is earned through the exam administered by GBCI. A course prepares you for the exam, and the exam result decides the credential.

How long are the 3FOLD Training LEED courses and how are they delivered?

On the 3FOLD Training course pages, the LEED Green Associate course runs 14 hours, the LEED AP BD+C course runs 21 hours and the combined LEED path runs 35 hours. They are delivered as Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT) with Learning Management System (LMS) resources, practice questions and full-length mock exams.

Where can I check the current LEED exam retake rules?

The LEED candidate handbooks and the USGBC LEED v5 exam information hold the current rules. This article does not state fees, scores, exam dates, job outcomes or eligibility rules, so check USGBC and GBCI before you plan.
