Passing the exam is not about memorizing the standard. It is about showing that you can apply the audit method to ISO 45001 clearly, under time pressure. Candidates who pass usually prepare in the same sensible ways: they know the format, practice with the standard, manage their time and write structured answers. This guide collects those tips for the CQI (Chartered Quality Institute) and IRCA (International Register of Certificated Auditors) ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam. CQI and IRCA set the exam rules, so always confirm the current format with them and your training provider. No tip can promise a pass, but good habits help.
To prepare for the CQI IRCA ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam, learn the format, attend every session, practice with the standard open, take timed mock exams, and plan your 120 minutes against the 90 marks. In the exam, answer every question in every section, because each section has its own minimum. Write short, structured answers that link each point to the audit method and to the clause of ISO 45001, and use the permitted copy of the standard to confirm wording.

What should you know about the exam before you start preparing?
Know the format, the pass rule and what you may bring.
Start with the facts. According to the 3FOLD Training sample exam page, the exam has 4 sections and 15 questions worth 90 marks, with 120 minutes allowed. It is closed book, but you may use ISO 45001:2018 and an English dictionary. Each section has its own minimum mark, and you must pass every section. Our guide to the format of the ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam sets out the sections and marks in full.
How should you use your study time?
Attend every session, practice little and often, and keep time for mock exams.
- Attend and take part. The audit method builds from one session to the next, and the exam draws on the whole course.
- Study little and often. Short sessions across weeks work better than one long night.
- Revisit weak areas. Use mock exam results to decide where to spend time.
- Practice questions. Try our ISO 45001 MCQ questions and answers and our ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam questions and answers.
- Plan the time. Our guide to ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam preparation time helps you decide how long you need.
Passing is about applying the audit method clearly, not about remembering every clause.
Want mock exams and recordings to practice with? The course includes LMS access for both.
How do you manage the 120 minutes?
Share the time in proportion to the marks, and keep a few minutes to check your work.
| Section | Questions | Marks | Rough time guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | 5 at 2 marks | 10 | About 13 minutes |
| Section 2 | 4 at 5 marks | 20 | About 27 minutes |
| Section 3 | 3 at 10 marks | 30 | About 40 minutes |
| Section 4 | 3 at 10 marks | 30 | About 40 minutes |
The time guide is our own planning aid. It simply shares the 120 minutes in proportion to the 90 marks, so it is not an official allocation. Watch the clock at the end of each section, and if you run over, move on and return if time allows.
How do you use the standard in the exam room?
As a reference for clause wording, not as a place to learn the topic for the first time.
Because the exam allows ISO 45001:2018, you do not need to memorize clause wording word for word. You do need to find things fast. Learn the layout of clauses 4 to 10, mark or learn where the key requirements are, and practice finding them under time pressure. Use the standard to confirm a point, then spend your time on the answer. ISO 19011 is not allowed in the room, so learn the audit method from the course instead. Our guide to how an ISO 45001 audit works helps you connect the clauses to the audit process.
How do you write answers that earn marks?
Read the question, answer what is asked, and structure your points.
- Read the question twice and underline what it asks you to do.
- Match the marks. A 2-mark question needs a short answer, and a 10-mark question needs several developed points.
- Use short, clear points in a logical order.
- Link each point to the audit method and, where it helps, to the clause of ISO 45001.
- Base findings on evidence and say what evidence you would look for.
Our guides to how to interview workers and gather evidence in an ISO 45001 audit and the ISO 45001 audit plan and checklist are useful models of the thinking the exam rewards.

How do you handle each section?
Treat every section as its own pass, and give each question a fair share of time.
| Section | Approach |
|---|---|
| Section 1 | Quick, accurate answers. Do not over-write 2-mark questions |
| Section 2 | A few clear points for each 5-mark question, in order |
| Section 3 | Developed answers for the 10-mark questions, with evidence and method |
| Section 4 | Keep time for it, because it carries as many marks as Section 3 |
The marks per question rise through the paper, so later answers need more detail. Always attempt every question, because each section has its own minimum.
What mistakes cost candidates marks?
Poor time control, skipping a section, ignoring the marks and not using evidence.
- Spending too long early. Time runs out before the heavy 10-mark questions.
- Leaving a section. A blank section risks missing its minimum.
- Ignoring the marks. A page for a 2-mark question wastes time.
- Quoting clauses without applying them. The exam tests how you use the standard in an audit.
- Bringing the wrong materials. ISO 19011 and notes are not allowed.
