A 35-hour course sounds substantial, but what exactly fills those hours? Before you commit, it helps to know what you will study, how deep each phase goes and what you will walk away with. This guide breaks down the 14-hour LEED Green Associate phase and the 21-hour LEED AP BD+C phase, domain by domain, and explains how to make the most of the time.

Quick answer

According to 3FOLD Training’s course pages, the training covers eight domains twice. The 14-hour LEED Green Associate phase builds foundations across LEED Process, Integrative Process, Location and Transportation, Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality. The 21-hour LEED AP BD+C phase revisits those domains in more depth for design and construction work. Practice questions, mock exams and learning resources support both phases.

What will you actually learn across the 35-hour training?

You will learn the eight LEED domains twice: first as foundations in 14 hours, then in more depth for design and construction in 21 hours.

The combined path is two phases in sequence. The first phase prepares you for the LEED Green Associate, which suits new learners, career changers and professionals because 3FOLD Training’s course page states there are no prerequisites. The second phase prepares you for the LEED AP BD+C and, according to its course page, needs a current Green Associate credential. Our guide on LEED Green Associate to LEED AP in v5 explains how the two steps connect.

Both phases are built around the same domain structure, which keeps the story consistent: you meet an idea once as a concept and again as a working tool. The table below summarizes six points candidates ask about most.

What does the 14-hour Green Associate phase cover?

The Green Associate phase covers foundations across eight domains, from the LEED process to indoor environmental quality.

LEED Process and Integrative Process

You study the fundamentals of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), the structure of the rating system and the certification process and its benefits. Then you look at integrative project delivery and the roles of an integrative project team.

Location and Transportation, and Sustainable Sites

These domains cover site selection, transportation demand management and equitable development, followed by site assessment and sustainable site design and development practices.

Water Efficiency, and Energy and Atmosphere

You cover outdoor and indoor water use reduction and water performance management, then building loads, energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy performance management.

Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality

You study life-cycle impacts, embodied carbon, product declarations, reuse and waste reduction, and then air quality, lighting, acoustics, thermal comfort, biophilic design, accessibility and inclusion.

The first 14 hours give you the map. The next 21 teach you to work in the territory.

What does the 21-hour LEED AP BD+C phase add?

The LEED AP BD+C phase revisits the same eight domains in more depth, with a focus on how a design and construction team applies them.

  • LEED Process: minimum program requirements, LEED goal pathways, system synergies and project, LEED and property boundaries.
  • Integrative Process, Planning and Assessments: the integrative design process, climate resilience and carbon assessment.
  • Location and Transportation, and Sustainable Sites: community connectivity, access to transit, construction pollution prevention, habitat conservation and heat island reduction.
  • Water Efficiency, and Energy and Atmosphere: fixtures and appliances, building envelope, commissioning, demand response, renewables and energy benchmarking.
  • Materials and Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality: building and material reuse, life-cycle assessment, construction waste management, ventilation, low-emitting materials, daylight and acoustics.

The shift from the first phase to the second is a shift from knowing what a concept is to knowing how a project team uses it. That is also the shift that scenario-based questions test, as our guide on why LEED candidates struggle with scenario-based questions explains, and our guide to the most common conceptual confusions on the LEED AP BD+C exam shows where overlapping terms catch people out.

See what’s included

What practice and support come with the training?

The training includes video lessons, notes, flashcards, domain-by-domain practice questions and quizzes, full-length mock exams and learning management system access.

How does practice build skill?

Domain-by-domain quizzes let you check each topic while it is fresh, and the full-length mock exams test whether that knowledge holds across a whole sitting. Our guide on the best way to prepare for the LEED exam covers how to use both.

Is the certificate the same as the credential?

No. 3FOLD Training issues a course completion certificate, while Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI) awards the LEED Green Associate and LEED AP BD+C credentials after you pass the exams. Our guide on the difference between a training certificate and a credential explains how to describe each one.

The course also does not replace the official references. The USGBC LEED v5 exam information lists the study materials for each exam, so use the course to work through them with structure. For extra practice, try our LEED Green Associate practice questions.

How do you get the most from the 35 hours?

Get the most from the 35 hours by preparing before each session, practising after each domain and reviewing your mistakes.

  • Skim the official reference for each domain before the session, so the explanation lands on prior knowledge.
  • Take the domain quiz soon after each topic, while it is fresh.
  • Write one line on what each missed question was really testing.
  • Keep a short gap between the Green Associate exam and the LEED AP BD+C phase to protect momentum.
  • Take the full-length mock exams near the end, and confirm the current exam format with USGBC and GBCI.

If you are still deciding how to structure your study, read our guide on LEED training course versus self-study, and see the USGBC LEED v5 overview for the wider picture.
