Search "AACE CCP study guide" and you'll mostly find two things: forum threads asking what to read, and third-party question-dump sites selling "practice questions" with no real connection to how the exam is structured. Neither actually answers the question. A study guide worth following should map to the exam itself — what's scored, how heavily, and in what form. What the CCP exam actually tests

As per AACE International's Candidate Handbook (May 2026 exam blueprint), the CCP exam runs up to 5 hours and includes 119 scored multiple-choice and scenario questions across six weighted domains, plus a separate seventh domain scored as a written memo:

How the exam is scored

Each of the 7 domains is scored individually and then averaged into one overall result. You need 70% overall to pass — not 70% in every single domain. Per AACE's Handbook, it is possible to fail some individual domains and still pass overall, and equally possible to pass most domains and still fail overall if performance is weak where it counts most. Results are released on a pass/fail basis only; no numerical score is provided.

Recommended study materials from AACE

AACE's Candidate Handbook lists several optional (not required) resources candidates can purchase directly from AACE, including its own CCP Certification Study Guide, AACE's Recommended Practices 11R-88 and 10S-90, the Skills & Knowledge of Cost Engineering (6th Edition) reference, the Total Cost Management Framework, a free "How to Write a CCP Memo" guide, and a formal CCP Review Course. What to prioritise for each domain

Rather than working through material cover to cover, study in proportion to how each domain is actually weighted:

• Managing Project Costs (36% — the largest domain by far): historical data and benchmarking, cost estimates from ROM through detailed level, budget baselines, tracking actual and committed costs, forecasting (EAC), and change order impacts. Spend the most time here.
• Interfacing with Other Disciplines (24%): translating TCM concepts into practical guidance, communicating cost data to stakeholders, supporting the tender/bid and change control processes, and coordinating with schedulers, procurement, and other internal/external stakeholders.
• Conduct Performance Measurement/Analysis (17%): baseline performance measurement, earned value analysis, CPI/SPI interpretation, cost variance and trend analysis, and profitability/margin analysis.
• Create Reports and Documentation (11%): preparing cost reports and dashboards, explaining project financial health to stakeholders, interpreting CPI/SPI in reports, and cash flow and variance reporting.
• Inform the Risk Management Process (7%): supporting risk registers and risk assessments, interpreting risk analysis impacts, and contingency/reserve management.
• Support/Inform the Scheduling Process (5% — the smallest domain): cost/resource loading summaries, reviewing schedules for cost impact, and estimating how schedule changes affect cost.

Formula recall and calculation practice matter most in Managing Project Costs and Conduct Performance Measurement/Analysis combined, since together they make up over half the scored questions.

Don't skip the Communication Competency memo

The 7th domain is easy to underweight because it isn't multiple-choice, but it's scored on its own and can't be guessed. You're given a scenario and must respond in memo form, in a closed-book onscreen text box, under time pressure — and you'll need your AACE Customer ID memorised to include in it, since no outside materials are permitted. Memos are graded in a monthly cycle (around the 15th), so results take longer to arrive than a purely multiple-choice exam would. Candidates who never practise writing a structured, professional memo under a clock tend to lose easy marks here — not because they don't understand the content, but because they haven't rehearsed the format.
