How to protect your CMQ/OE® result: a remote-proctored exam checklist
ASQ records every remote-proctored session and can review it. Here is how to set up your ID, room, desk and materials so your session stands up to any review.

You have put months into preparing for the Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE®) exam from the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and a technical slip or a rule you did not know about should not be what puts your result in question. This article gives you the exam-day rules that matter, in the order you need them, and shows which of them depend on where you live.
The ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE) remote-proctored exam is recorded, and ASQ’s Testing Agreement lists review of session recordings, log files and metadata among its security measures. To protect your result, confirm that remote proctoring is available in your country, match your ID to your registration, clear your room and desk, keep every reference book bound, and follow the proctor until the session ends. ASQ states that Live Remote Proctoring is not available in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan or China, where candidates test at a Prometric center.

Can you take the CMQ/OE exam remotely from the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Qatar?
No. ASQ states that Live Remote Proctoring is currently not available in China, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Pakistan, so candidates there sit at a Prometric test center. You can confirm the current list on the ASQ computer-based testing page.
| UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan, China | Prometric test center only. Arrive 30 minutes early, store belongings in a locker and expect an inspection. |
| Any country not on that list | Remote proctoring or a test center. Confirm availability when you book. |
The test-center and remote rules share the same core: valid ID, bound reference materials, no phones and no unauthorized help. If you are in the Gulf, the room and desk checklist below is still a useful way to see what proctors look for. What does ASQ review after a remote-proctored exam?
ASQ’s Testing Agreement lists live and recorded proctoring, review of exam session recordings, log files and metadata, and statistical and forensic analysis of results among its security measures. Read the full wording in the ASQ Testing Agreement.
Two details in that agreement matter to you. First, ASQ may cancel or invalidate a score, and it separates intentional misconduct from scores it cannot validate: a score may be canceled without additional sanctions when it cannot be validated with confidence. Second, the agreement names the behaviors it treats as misconduct, including using unauthorized notes, software, recording devices, smart glasses or mobile phones, capturing exam content, and sharing exam content afterward.
The practical conclusion is simple. Your recording and session data are the record of your exam, so a clean setup and calm behavior are your best protection. Our explainer on CMQ/OE exam result verification covers how this plays out for candidates who pass.
Your recording is the record of your exam, so make it a clean one.
What should you sort out before exam day?
Four things decide whether your session even starts: your ID, your registration name, your internet connection and your system check.
| Item | What to do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| ID | Carry a physical, unexpired, government-issued photo ID. | Electronic IDs on a phone or digital wallet are not accepted. |
| Name match | Check that your ID name matches your ASQ registration exactly. | Your face and ID photo are compared during the session. |
| System check | Run ASQ’s system readiness check before scheduling and again close to exam day. | ASQ makes you responsible for meeting the technical requirements. |
| Internet | Use a stable, wired connection if you can. | Failing to launch or finish because of your connection costs USD 130 to reschedule. |
How should you set up your room and desk?
ASQ’s remote proctoring guidance asks for an indoor, well-lit, quiet and uncluttered room where nobody else is present for the whole exam. Its live remote proctoring guide for candidates sets out the rules below.
What the 360-degree room scan covers
- All ceiling corners and the floor.
- The chair, including the underside, and the workspace, including the underside of the desk, keyboard, mouse and mousepad.
- Pictures, decor and bookcases, which you may be asked to cover.
- Window locations and the view through them. Glass walls need frosting if you cannot reposition.
What is and is not allowed at your desk
| Category | Not allowed | Allowed |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | Pens, pencils, notebooks, blank paper | Bound reference materials |
| Devices | Phones, watches, other electronics, Bluetooth devices, most wearable tech | Computer, mouse and keyboard, which are subject to inspection |
| Calculator | Programmable calculators, such as TI-89 style models | Silent, hand-held, battery-operated calculator without an alphanumeric keyboard |
| Clothing | Outerwear, hats, bulky accessories | Light clothing; you may hang a removed layer on the chair back |
| Food and drink | Food and drinks | Two tissues, which are inspected |
The proctor may also ask you to raise your sleeves, show your ears, take off your glasses for inspection and turn your pockets out. ASQ lists pens, pencils and blank paper as prohibited, and the exam includes an on-screen calculator, so plan to work without scratch paper and ask at check-in if you are unsure.
What are the rules for open-book materials in the CMQ/OE exam?
ASQ states that all of its exams are open-book, and that all reference materials, including every form of notes, must be bound and stay bound during the exam. The same rule appears on the ASQ CMQ/OE page and in ASQ’s exam policies.
| Material | Status |
|---|---|
| Notes in a ring or spiral binder, or stitched or glued | Allowed. Fasteners must go through all pages. |
| Post-It notes | Allowed only as book tabs. |
| Hand-stapled or paper-clipped pages, loose notes | Not allowed. |
| Blank writing tablets or tablets containing blank pages | Not allowed. |
| Collections of questions and answers, weekly refresher quizzes | Not allowed. |
The Testing Agreement also bars unauthorized study materials, including questions from past exams or leaked exam content, before the exam. Study from legitimate sources, and build your own bound reference with tabs for each of the 7 Body of Knowledge domains. Our guide to the CMQ/OE 2026 exam changes shows what changed in the 2026 version.

How should you behave during a remote-proctored exam?
Stay in view, stay silent and stay in place, because those three habits cover most of ASQ’s conduct rules for remote sessions.
- Do not speak aloud. Read every question silently.
- Do not change location or turn off the lights. ASQ calls both strictly prohibited.
- Do not receive help from anyone. Nobody else may be in the room for the full session.
- Tell the proctor before you leave the camera view. ASQ allows a maximum of three ten-minute breaks, and a full security scan follows each one.
- Expect check-in to repeat. ASQ repeats it before the exam, after any break and every time you disconnect or restart.
- Expect continuous recording and periodic facial scans. Treat the whole session as monitored.
ASQ states that failure to comply may result in termination of your exam and may invalidate your results. If something unexpected happens, such as a noise at the door or a dropped connection, stop and tell the proctor instead of improvising.
Is your exam setup ready? Try the readiness checker
CMQ/OE® remote-proctoring readiness checker
For planning only. This tool is not an ASQ or Prometric product, and it does not replace ASQ’s own rules or system check.
The checker opens with an example candidate who has sorted ID, connection and desk but has not yet bound their notes or covered the shelves. It flags the unbound notes as critical, because ASQ requires every reference to stay bound during the exam.
