Candidates often ask how hard the AACE International (AACEI) Certified Cost Professional (CCP) exam really is, and the honest answer starts with what AACEI does not publish. It does not release a pass rate, so difficulty has to be judged from the exam’s structure and the rules for passing. This guide explains what makes the CCP exam demanding and gives you a way to check your own readiness.
Quick answer
AACE International (AACEI) does not publish a pass rate or difficulty rating for the Certified Cost Professional (CCP) exam. The exam is demanding because it has 119 multiple-choice and compound scenario questions across 6 domains plus a memo, it is closed book, and you need an overall average of 70% across 7 domains to pass.

What does AACEI say about difficulty?
AACEI does not give a difficulty rating or a pass rate. It reports results on a pass or fail basis only, in line with the policy of its Certification Board, so no individual scores are given. Any pass rate you see quoted online comes from other sources, not from AACEI, so treat it with care.
So what can you judge it by?
You can judge it by what AACEI does publish on its CCP details page: the format, the domains, the pass rule and the experience requirement. The sections below use those facts.

What makes the CCP exam demanding?
The exam is demanding for 5 reasons that come straight from AACEI’s published format. None of them is a trick, but together they reward broad, applied preparation more than memorising one subject.
1. It covers a wide range of work
The questions span 6 domains, from managing project costs to scheduling and risk, and a seventh domain, Communication, is assessed through a memo. Strength in cost control alone is not enough.
2. Many questions are scenarios
AACEI describes the questions as simple multiple-choice and compound scenario questions. A scenario question is built around a work situation, so you need working knowledge, not only definitions.
3. The exam is closed book
You cannot bring reference books. Onscreen formula sheets are available, and a battery-operated calculator of any style is permitted, although the testing center does not provide one.
4. The pass rule averages all 7 domains
AACEI states that an overall average score of 70% or higher is needed to pass, and that the final result averages the scores of all 7 domains. A weak domain pulls the average down, even a domain with few questions, so avoid leaving any area untouched.
The pass rule applies to the overall average of all 7 domains.
5. The memo is graded and averaged
The memo is graded and averaged with your multiple-choice result, which is also why results are not immediate. Our guide on when you get CCP exam results explains the wait.
Where do the questions come from?
Managing Project Costs is the largest domain, with 43 of the 119 multiple-choice questions, according to AACEI. The other domains range from 28 questions down to 6.
| Domain | Multiple-choice questions |
|---|---|
| Managing Project Costs | 43 |
| Interface with Other Disciplines | 28 |
| Conduct Performance Measurement and Analysis | 20 |
| Create Reports and Documentation | 13 |
| Inform the Risk Management Process | 9 |
| Support and Inform the Scheduling Process | 6 |
| Communication | 1 memo with a given scenario |
Use the counts to plan your time, not to skip a domain. Because AACEI averages the scores of all 7 domains, a domain with only 6 questions is still part of the average. Our CCP exam format guide explains the structure in more detail.
How ready are you on paper?
Enter the score you expect in each domain, for example from a practice test. The checker averages the 7 scores, compares the result with 70% and shows your weakest domain.
CCP readiness check
For planning only. Enter the score you expect in each domain, for example from a practice test. It applies the 70% average of 7 domains that AACEI states, and it cannot predict your result.
About this example: the example scores are made up to show how one weak domain pulls the average down. Replace them with your own practice results.

Who finds it harder?
AACEI requires 8 years of industry-related experience, or 4 years plus a 4-year industry-related college degree, so candidates arrive with real project exposure. The exam is usually harder in the domains you rarely touch at work.
Does experience mean you will pass?
No. Experience helps with scenario questions, but the exam is closed book and tests all 7 domains. A cost engineer with little scheduling or risk exposure still has to prepare those areas.
What if you do not pass?
After AACEI clears your application, you have 6 months to take the exam up to 3 times, with 2 attempts at a reduced fee. After the 6 months, you must begin a new registration and pay the full exam fee.
How do you make it manageable?
Prepare every domain, practise under exam conditions and use practice results to find gaps. A plan that starts from the domain counts above keeps your effort in proportion without skipping the small domains.
Where can you practise?
Our AACE CCP study plan shows how to structure the weeks, and the CCP study guide covers what to study. Use the CCP sample exam questions to test yourself, and the CCP mock exam guide to practise a full paper.
