When developing ISO 9001, the ISO committee settled on a number of ‘Quality Management Principles’ that were advised to be used in creating an effective management system to achieve flexibility, customer satisfaction, and stronger performance. ISO 9001 was maintained through continuous improvement of the Quality Management System to fulfill regulatory requirements and customer satisfaction.

What are the ISO 9001 quality management principles?
The ISO 9001 quality management principles are seven principles that form the basis of the standard. ISO 9001 is the most generic and accepted international standard when building the Quality Management System in an organization. This standard can be applied to any type of organization, and it is based on seven quality principles that form the basis of the standard. See the ISO 9001 quality management system guide for the wider picture.
What is a quality management system (QMS) in ISO 9001?
A quality management system (QMS) is a set of various business processes targeted at meeting customer needs and increasing their satisfaction. It is the part of an organization’s management system that deals with quality.
What are the seven ISO 9001 quality management principles?
There are seven: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision-making and relationship management.
| No. | Principle | In one line |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Customer focus | Gather customer feedback to understand needs and improve processes and performance. |
| 2 | Leadership | A clear perception of the company’s future that keeps the whole team working to the same objectives. |
| 3 | Engagement of people | People at all levels know their role and feel respected for their contribution. |
| 4 | Process approach | Plan-Do-Check-Act guides a process-driven environment. |
| 5 | Improvement | Continual improvement and overall performance are the main objective. |
| 6 | Evidence-based decision-making | Authentic, reliable data supports informed decisions. |
| 7 | Relationship management | Select and build continuing relationships with suppliers and other interested parties. |
1. Customer focus
Growing a stronger customer focus is an exceptional way of establishing your commitment to quality. Gathering customer feedback is key, as this will help you understand the customer needs and requirements to improve your business process and performance.
2. Leadership
Stable and strong Leadership equals you having a clear perception of your company’s future. This creates and maintains the internal environment in which employees can fully take part in achieving the organization’s objectives. Every organization should make sure that the whole team works coherently for the same objectives, and also help in increasing morale and productivity.
3. Engagement of people
People at all levels are the basis of an organization and their full participation facilitates their abilities to be used for the organization’s benefit. It is necessary that everyone in your company knows their role and feels respected for their contribution to its success. This will also determine your organization’s engagement, and improve quality.

4. Process approach
The Plan-Do-Check-Act principle of the ISO 9001 Standard will guide you to develop a process-driven environment across your organization. It is a set of actions that use resources to convert inputs into outputs.
5. Improvement
Continual improvement and overall performance should be an organization’s main objective. Everyone in your organization should make the necessary efforts to find ways to improve and make your business stronger.
6. Evidence-based decision-making
Authentic and reliable data is important for making informed decisions. To clarify the root cause of nonconformity, you need the right information. Efficient decisions based on the scrutiny of data and information.
7. Relationship management
The organization needs to analyze and select suppliers that can maintain costs, develop resources and create value. Building such continuing relationships with the suppliers and other interested parties means balancing short-term and long-term financial gains, commonly beneficial strategies.
Did ISO 9001:2026 change the quality management principles?
No. ISO 9001:2026, the sixth edition published in September 2026, lists the same seven principles in subclause 0.2, and it is still based on the principles in ISO 9000.
The new edition replaces ISO 9001:2015 and takes in Amendment ISO 9001:2015/Amd 1:2024. What did change sits in the requirements, and a few of those changes connect directly to the principles:
- Quality culture and ethical behaviour now appear in the requirements, especially around leadership, awareness and the environment in which processes operate.
- Risks and opportunities are separated more clearly, with their own actions.
- Management of change is tougher than before.
Note: This page was first written for ISO 9001:2015. The principles themselves have not changed, but the standard you audit against is now ISO 9001:2026. Check the current edition with ISO before you quote a clause.
