LEED — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — is the world’s most widely used green building rating system, and the UAE is among the largest LEED markets outside the United States. If you work in design, construction, facilities or sustainability consulting in Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Sharjah, a LEED credential has moved from a nice-to-have to a routine expectation on tender documents.
LEED Certification is known as one of the best rating systems provided by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and helps understand the methods and importance of green building. USGBC is the non-profit that develops the LEED rating system, while its certification body GBCI administers the professional credentials and certifies projects.
If you want to be LEED Certified, you must know the basic information on different certifications offered by USGBC.
In this article, we will provide you with detailed information on LEED Certification in UAE.
How established is LEED in the UAE?
The United Arab Emirates is one of the ten largest markets for LEED-certified space outside the United States, with hundreds of certified projects and a steadily growing pipeline. USGBC attributes that growth to market demand, the country’s climate commitments and the international value of a globally recognised certification. Across the wider MENA region, thousands of projects use LEED and there is an established community of LEED-credentialed professionals. Dubai itself holds a LEED for Cities Platinum certification and is home to the world’s first LEED Platinum certified mosque. Current country and regional figures are published on the USGBC website.
Does LEED replace Al Sa’fat or Estidama?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding among UAE candidates. Dubai’s Al Sa’fat system and Abu Dhabi’s Estidama Pearl Rating System are the locally mandated green building frameworks for new construction in their respective emirates. LEED sits alongside them as a voluntary, international certification, typically pursued by developers, multinational tenants and owners reporting against global ESG frameworks. In practice many UAE project teams deliver against the local mandatory system and certify under LEED as well — which is exactly why LEED-credentialed professionals are in demand here.
LEED Green Associate (LEED GA):
This is a foundation course that helps in understanding the LEED rating system’s basic framework and concepts. After completing the LEED GA, you can move on to the advanced credentials such as the LEED AP with the specialty.
There are no prerequisites — anyone can sit the LEED Green Associate exam. It is a multiple-choice exam sat at a Prometric test centre or remotely with online proctoring. Our full guide to the credential is in what is LEED Green Associate.
LEED Accredited Professional Specialty (LEED AP BD+C):
This is the advanced level of the LEED certifications. Once you pass the LEED GA Exam, you can pursue the LEED AP.LEED AP is offered in five specialties — Building Design + Construction (BD+C), Interior Design + Construction (ID+C), Operations + Maintenance (O+M), Neighborhood Development (ND) and Homes. BD+C is by far the most widely held, and it is the specialty 3FOLD TRAINING prepares candidates for. You must hold an active LEED Green Associate credential when you register for a LEED AP exam, unless you take the combined LEED GA and LEED AP exam. There is more detail in our article on the LEED Accredited Professional credential.
Note: It is often advised to pursue the LEED AP after successfully passing the LEED GA as it would add positively to your career advancement.
What LEED v5 means for candidates
USGBC launched LEED v5 on 28 April 2025, and opened v5 project certification on 3 November 2025. It is the biggest change to LEED in more than a decade: roughly half of all available points now sit under decarbonisation, with the remainder split between quality of life and ecological conservation and restoration. Carbon and climate-risk assessments are mandatory on every project.
The credential exams are moving across too. The LEED Green Associate exam is based on LEED v5, and the LEED AP BD+C, O+M and ID+C exams are transitioning to v5, while LEED AP Homes and LEED AP ND remain based on LEED v4. Before you register, confirm the version and available exam formats in the USGBC LEED Candidate Handbooks, which are the authoritative source. Our LEED v5 guide for GA and AP candidates covers what the transition means in practice.
What do the LEED exams cost?
Exam fees are set by USGBC and are paid directly to them, separately from any training. They vary by credential, by whether you hold USGBC membership, and are reviewed periodically. Always check the current exam fee on the USGBC website before you register, rather than relying on a figure quoted anywhere else.
