Why Can a v4 GA Take a v5 AP Exam?

The transition from LEED v4 to LEED v5 changed the content covered by the professional exams, but it did not create a requirement for existing LEED Green Associates to retake the GA exam before pursuing a v5 AP specialty.

According to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) , candidates who earned their LEED Green Associate credential through either v4 or v5 are eligible to take the new LEED v5 LEED AP with Specialty exam.

Important: Your GA exam version does not by itself prevent you from progressing to a v5 AP specialty. The key requirement for the specialty-only exam is that your LEED Green Associate credential is active when you register and remains active through the exam date.

What Are the LEED AP Eligibility Requirements?

USGBC states that candidates taking a LEED AP with Specialty exam must meet the current eligibility requirements.

Age Requirement

Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.

Active GA Credential

For the specialty-only exam, you must hold an active LEED Green Associate credential at registration and maintain its active status through the exam date.

Project Experience

Prior experience working on LEED-registered projects is strongly recommended by USGBC.

Specialty Selection

You need to select the AP specialty that matches the LEED rating-system area you intend to pursue.

These requirements are described in the official USGBC LEED AP with Specialty exam guidance .

Which LEED AP Specialties Are Based on v5?

LEED v5 currently applies to the commercial rating systems BD+C, ID+C and O+M. The corresponding LEED AP specialty exams have been updated to align with LEED v5.

LEED AP SpecialtyCurrent Exam Basis
LEED AP BD+CLEED v5
LEED AP ID+CLEED v5
LEED AP O+MLEED v5
LEED AP NDLEED v4
LEED AP HomesLEED v4

USGBC's current LEED v5 exam information confirms which professional exams have transitioned to v5.

Does the GA Exam Version Matter?

For eligibility to take the v5 AP with Specialty exam, the answer is no. USGBC specifically confirms that both v4 and v5 Green Associate credentials can satisfy the GA requirement.

LEED v4 GA

If you already earned your LEED Green Associate credential through the v4 exam, you can use that credential to meet the GA requirement for the v5 AP specialty exam.

LEED v5 GA

If you earned your Green Associate credential through the v5 exam, you can also progress to the applicable v5 AP specialty.

The key point: You do not need to have passed the v5 GA exam specifically in order to qualify for the v5 AP specialty exam.

Do You Need to Retake the GA Exam?

No. If you already hold an active LEED Green Associate credential earned through LEED v4, you do not need to retake the Green Associate exam simply because you want to pursue a LEED v5 AP specialty.

Your existing GA credential provides the eligibility foundation for the specialty-only AP exam, subject to USGBC's current eligibility rules.

Do not confuse exam content with credential eligibility. The AP exam may test LEED v5 content even though your existing GA credential was earned under v4.

Do You Need LEED Project Experience?

USGBC strongly recommends prior experience working on LEED-registered projects before taking the LEED AP with Specialty exam.

However, this is different from the formal eligibility requirement. USGBC's current eligibility guidance requires an active LEED Green Associate credential for the specialty-only exam and states that prior LEED project experience is strongly recommended.

This distinction matters for v4 GA holders because having a v4 credential does not mean you are required to gain a new v5 project before registering for the AP exam.

How to Move From LEED v4 GA to LEED v5 AP

1

Check Your GA Status

Confirm that your LEED Green Associate credential is active.

2

Select Your AP Specialty

Choose the specialty that matches your intended professional area, such as BD+C, ID+C or O+M.

3

Study the v5 Content

Your AP preparation should focus on the current LEED v5 content for the specialty you are taking.

4

Prepare With Practice

Use the applicable USGBC study resources, practice questions and mock exams to become familiar with the exam format and subject areas.

5

Register for the AP Exam

Register through your USGBC credential account after confirming that you meet the current eligibility requirements.

Can You Take GA and AP Training Together?

Training progression and exam eligibility are two different things. A learner may choose to prepare for the Green Associate and AP specialty as part of a structured training pathway, while the official AP exam eligibility requirements remain determined by USGBC/GBCI.

For someone who already holds a LEED v4 Green Associate credential, the practical focus can therefore shift directly toward the relevant LEED v5 AP specialty content.

For example: A professional holding an active LEED v4 GA credential who wants to pursue LEED AP BD+C can prepare specifically for the v5 BD+C AP specialty rather than taking the GA exam again.

What Is the Current LEED v5 AP Timeline?

LEED v5 professional exams are being introduced through a beta and final-exam rollout. USGBC currently lists the following estimated timeline for the LEED AP with Specialty exam:

StageLEED AP with Specialty
v4 last day to testJune 28, 2026
v5 beta testing phaseNovember 2026 – January 2027
Estimated final v5 examFebruary 2027

USGBC notes that these dates are estimates and may shift depending on beta participation and the time required to complete exam analysis.

What Changes When You Move From GA to AP?

The Green Associate is a foundational credential, while the LEED AP with Specialty credential demonstrates advanced knowledge of green building and a specific LEED rating system.

The official USGBC LEED AP credential page describes the AP as an advanced professional credential focused on green building and a specific LEED rating system.

Common LEED v4 GA to v5 AP Mistakes

✓
Assuming a v4 GA is no longer valid for AP eligibility.
USGBC explicitly confirms that a GA earned through v4 or v5 qualifies for the v5 AP exam.
✓
Preparing for the AP exam using only old v4 material.
The v5 AP specialty exam is aligned with the applicable v5 rating system.
✓
Thinking you must retake the GA exam.
An active v4 GA credential can satisfy the GA eligibility requirement for the specialty-only AP exam.
✓
Confusing recommended experience with a mandatory prerequisite.
USGBC strongly recommends LEED project experience, but the formal specialty-only eligibility requirement includes an active GA credential.
