You are about to apply for the Project Management Professional (PMP®) exam and see a “Join PMI” button on every page. Many candidates wonder whether membership comes first. This guide settles whether PMI® membership is required, what it changes in the exam fee, and when it makes sense to join.
Quick answer
PMI® membership is not mandatory to apply for or take the PMP® exam. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) treats membership and certification as separate, so a non-member can earn the PMP® credential by paying the non-member exam fee. Membership is optional and mainly lowers the exam fee, adds PMI resources, and can be worth it when more than one PMI certification is planned.
| Awarding body | Project Management Institute (PMI®) |
| Membership required? | No. Membership is optional for the PMP® exam |
| PMP® exam fee (PMI list price) | $405 for members and $655 for non-members |
| PMI membership fee (example used here) | $159 with a local chapter, plus applicable tax |
| Pricing depends on | Your current country of work and residence; developing economies generally pay less |
| Where you pay | Directly to PMI through your PMI account |
| Timing rule | Membership must be active before the certification payment to get the member price |
Is PMI membership mandatory for the PMP exam?
No. You can create a PMI account, submit your PMP® application, pay the exam fee and sit the exam without becoming a PMI member.
PMI confirms that membership is separate from its certifications. The only thing that changes if you stay a non-member is the price you pay. Eligibility, the exam content and the credential you earn are identical for members and non-members.

What is the difference between PMI membership and PMP certification?
Membership is a paid subscription to PMI’s resources, while PMP® certification is a credential you earn by meeting PMI’s eligibility requirements and passing the exam.
| Item | PMI membership | PMP® certification |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Access to professional resources and the PMI community | A professional credential |
| How you get it | Pay the membership fee | Meet eligibility requirements and pass the exam |
| Required for the other? | No | No |
PMI lists member benefits that include digital access to the PMBOK® Guide and other PMI standards, member pricing on certifications and renewals, free and discounted eLearning, webinars, templates and tools, and access to the PMI professional community. PMI advertises up to 30% off certifications, renewals and selected learning for members.
How much can PMI membership save on the PMP exam fee?
In the UAE example below, the member route costs $95.55 less than the non-member route, even after paying for membership.
PMI lists the PMP® exam fee at $655 for non-members and $405 for members. The gap is $250 before tax. Membership itself costs money, so the real saving is the gap minus the membership fee. This example uses the $159 membership with a local chapter and the UAE’s 5% VAT (value added tax).
| Cost item | Non-member route | Member route |
|---|---|---|
| PMP® exam fee | $655.00 | $405.00 |
| PMI membership fee | Not paid | $159.00 |
| Subtotal before tax | $655.00 | $564.00 |
| 5% VAT | $32.75 | $28.20 |
| Total | $687.75 | $592.20 |
| Member route saves | $95.55 |
The saving is modest for a single certification, but membership also gives you a year of PMI resources that a non-member does not receive. Treat the numbers as an illustration only. Always confirm the amounts displayed in your own PMI account, and see our guide to the total cost of PMP certification for the full breakdown.
Compare the member and non-member route
For planning only. Uses the PMI list prices quoted in this guide, not a PMI quotation.
The preloaded example is a UAE candidate who joins with a local chapter and pays 5% VAT. The member route comes to $592.20 against $687.75 for the non-member route, so membership saves $95.55 on the PMP® exam alone.
Does PMI pricing depend on where you live?
Yes. PMI uses geolocation-based pricing, so candidates in developing economies generally pay lower membership and exam fees than candidates in developed economies.
Two candidates preparing for the same exam may therefore see different numbers. A candidate working in a developing country is shown lower amounts than a candidate working in a developed country, and local taxes such as VAT are added on top where they apply. The figures in this guide are the UAE example, so use them to understand the logic, not as your final bill.
Which location should you enter in your PMI account?
Always enter the country where you currently work and live when you create your PMI account. The price follows that location, not your nationality or the country on your passport.
For example, an Indian national working in the UAE enters the UAE and sees UAE pricing, while the same professional living and working in India enters India and sees India pricing. Enter your real, current location from the start, because the fees shown in your account depend on it. Our guide on the total cost of PMP certification, exam fee and membership explains how this works in more detail.

When should you become a PMI member?
Join before you pay for the PMP® exam if you want the member price; the exact timing before that is your choice.
PMI notes that if membership is obtained after paying for a certification, the difference may not be refunded. Two timings are common:
- At the start. Joining when you create your PMI account lets you use member resources, such as the PMBOK® Guide and eLearning, during your preparation.
- After approval. Joining once your application is approved lets you arrange membership together with paying for and scheduling the exam.
Learners in our PMP® batches generally become PMI members, but the timing differs from one learner to another. Membership is not a requirement imposed by 3FOLD Training. A typical UAE path runs from training to application, approval, membership and exam payment, then exam scheduling. For the full sequence, see the steps to become a certified PMP and how to submit your PMP exam application.
Does PMI membership help if you plan another PMI certification?
It may, because one membership can bring member pricing to more than one certification in the same membership year.
Consider a professional in the UAE who plans the PMP® and a second PMI certification within the same year. Rather than judging membership against the PMP® fee alone, the candidate can weigh one membership fee against member pricing on both exams. Applicable pricing is subject to PMI’s regional pricing and membership rules, so check the amounts in your account.
If you only plan the PMP®, the decision depends on how much you expect to use the member benefits. Both choices are valid. Check the PMP eligibility requirements first, then use PMI’s own pages on PMI membership and the PMP certification to confirm the current fees.

Frequently asked questions
Is PMI membership mandatory to take the PMP exam?
No. PMI® membership is not mandatory to apply for or take the PMP® exam. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) treats membership and certification as separate, so a candidate can apply, sit the exam and earn the PMP® credential as a non-member by paying the non-member exam fee.
Can I take the PMP exam without PMI membership?
Yes. A candidate can take the PMP® exam from the Project Management Institute (PMI®) without membership. The only difference is the exam fee, which is higher for non-members than for members.
How much more does a non-member pay for the PMP exam?
PMI® lists the PMP® exam fee at $655 for non-members and $405 for members, a gap of $250 before tax. After the PMI membership fee of $159 is added, the member route is $91 lower before tax, and $95.55 lower with 5% VAT, in the UAE example used in this guide.
Is PMI membership pricing the same in every country?
No. PMI® uses geolocation-based pricing, so candidates in developing economies generally pay lower membership and PMP® exam fees than candidates in developed economies. The price follows the country where you currently work and live, so check the amounts shown in your own PMI account before you pay.
Which country should I select when creating my PMI account?
Select the country where you currently work and live. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) prices membership and the PMP® exam by that location, not by nationality, so an Indian national working in the UAE enters the UAE and sees UAE pricing.
Do I need PMI membership before applying for the PMP?
No. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) confirms that membership is not required to apply for or earn a PMI certification. You can create a PMI account and submit your PMP® application without joining.
When should I become a PMI member for the PMP exam?
Become a member before you pay for the PMP® exam if you want the member price. PMI® notes that if membership is purchased after a certification payment, the difference may not be refunded. Some candidates join earlier to use member resources during preparation.
Can I become a PMI member after submitting my PMP application?
Yes. PMI® membership is separate from the PMP® certification application, so you can join after you submit your application. Make sure membership is active before the certification payment if you want the member exam fee.
Can PMI membership help if I plan to take another PMI certification?
It may. The Project Management Institute (PMI®) offers member pricing on applicable certifications, so a candidate planning more than one PMI certification in the same membership year should compare the combined cost, subject to PMI’s regional pricing and membership rules.
Do 3FOLD learners have to buy PMI membership through 3FOLD?
No. PMI® membership and the PMP® exam fee are paid directly to the Project Management Institute (PMI®) through your PMI account. 3FOLD Training does not collect the PMI membership fee or the exam fee.
