Which Project Management Certification Should You Get? PMP or CAPM
If you qualify for the PMP, take the PMP. If you do not yet, start with the CAPM. Here is how to know which one you are.
In this guide
Experienced professionals often hesitate for opposite reasons. Some have more than 5 years of experience and still doubt they can take the PMP. Others fear they lack the foundation, or believe they must pass the CAPM first. This guide gives a straight answer for each.
Quick answer
Take the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI®) if you meet its education and experience requirements. If you do not yet have enough experience, start with the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®), which needs no project experience. The CAPM is not a prerequisite for the PMP.
| Awarding body | Project Management Institute (PMI) |
| Take the PMP if | You meet the experience requirement for your education level |
| Take the CAPM if | You do not yet have the project experience for the PMP |
| CAPM before PMP | Not required |
Which project management certification should you get?
Let your experience decide, not your confidence. If you qualify for the PMP, take the PMP. If you do not, take the CAPM now and build toward the PMP.
The reason is simple. The PMP is PMI’s certification for people who have led projects, and the CAPM is its entry-level certification for people who have not yet. Choosing the CAPM when you qualify for the PMP adds a step you do not need, and choosing the PMP before you qualify is not possible, because PMI checks your experience on the application.

Do you qualify for the PMP?
You qualify when your education, your months leading projects and your 35 hours of training all meet PMI’s requirements.
| Your education | Experience leading projects |
|---|---|
| High school diploma or GED | 5 years (60 months) |
| Associate degree or vocational trade school | 4 years (48 months) |
| Bachelor’s degree or higher | 3 years (36 months) |
| PMI Global Accreditation Center degree | 2 years (24 months) |
You have more than 5 years of experience but still doubt it
More than 5 years can meet every path, as long as the months are real project work inside the last 10 years and overlapping months are counted once. Years in a job are not the same as years leading projects, so list your projects before you decide. Your title does not matter, and our guides on applying without being a project manager and what projects count as PMP experience help you test your own examples.
You fear you lack the foundation
The foundation comes from the 35 hours of training, not from a prior certification. Qualifying for the PMP means you have led project work; the course then organizes what you already do into the exam’s framework. Our PMP eligibility guide covers every requirement in full.
Is CAPM a prerequisite for the PMP?
No. PMI does not require the CAPM before the PMP exam.
The CAPM can help in one way: an active CAPM is one of the ways to meet the PMP 35-hour training requirement. It does not reduce the experience requirement, so a CAPM holder without the project months still cannot apply for the PMP. Check PMI’s PMP certification page on the day you apply, because rules can change.
When is the CAPM the right choice?
The CAPM is right when you are early in your project career or still short of the PMP experience requirement.
| Area | CAPM | PMP |
|---|---|---|
| Project experience | None required | 2 to 5 years, by education |
| Education or training | Secondary degree and 23 hours of project management education | 35 hours of training, or an active CAPM |
| Exam | 150 questions, 180 minutes | 180 questions, 240 minutes |
| Renewal every 3 years | 15 PDUs | 60 PDUs |
If you are only a few months short of the PMP requirement, you can also simply wait and apply once you qualify. The CAPM is most useful when you need a recognized credential now, or when your project experience is still years away. Our guide on how to get PMP certification shows the route once you qualify.

Certification selector
For planning only. PMI decides your eligibility. Count only real project months from the last 10 years, with overlapping months counted once.
The preloaded example is a learner with a bachelor’s degree and 20 months leading projects. That learner needs 36 months for the PMP, so is 16 months short and starts with the CAPM.

Frequently asked questions
Which project management certification should you get?
Choose the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) if you meet its education and experience requirements, and the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) if you do not yet have the experience. The PMP asks for 2 to 5 years of project experience; the CAPM asks for none.
Is CAPM a prerequisite for the PMP?
No. The Project Management Institute (PMI) does not require the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) before the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam. An active CAPM is one way to meet the PMP 35-hour training requirement, but it does not reduce the PMP experience requirement.
Can you take the PMP exam with more than 5 years of experience?
Often yes. The Project Management Institute (PMI) asks for between 2 and 5 years of experience managing projects within the last 10 years, depending on education, so more than 5 years can meet every path. The experience must be real project work, and overlapping months count once.
What if you do not have enough experience for the PMP?
Start with the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) from the Project Management Institute (PMI). It needs a secondary degree, a minimum age of 18 and 23 hours of project management education, with no project experience required. Then build your project months toward the Project Management Professional (PMP) requirement.
Is CAPM worth taking if you already qualify for the PMP?
Usually not. If you meet the Project Management Professional (PMP) requirements from the Project Management Institute (PMI), the CAPM adds another exam and renewal cycle without shortening the PMP path. Going straight to the PMP is the more direct route.
Do you need a degree to take the CAPM exam?
No university degree is needed. The Project Management Institute (PMI) asks for a secondary degree, such as a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent, for the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) exam, plus 23 hours of project management education completed before the exam.
Do you need a project manager title to take the PMP exam?
No. The Project Management Institute (PMI) looks at whether you led or managed projects, taking responsibility for planning, decisions and delivery, so your job title does not decide eligibility for the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.
