ISO 14001 Lead Auditor Exam Revision Plan
Where the marks are, which environmental management topics to master, how to pace the paper and what to do after the exam.
In this guide
Candidates for the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor exam usually know the environmental management system well by the end of the course. What trips people up is how the paper is built: how marks are spread, how scenario questions reward judgement, and how little time there is to second-guess.
This plan is built around the marking scheme in the exam framework CQI IRCA publish for Lead Auditor courses. 3FOLD Training, a CQI IRCA Approved Training Partner, delivers the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor course that leads to this exam.

How is the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor exam marked?
The marks are not spread evenly. Domains 1 to 3 are each worth 8 marks, while the audit itself, Domain 4, is worth 36, and reporting and closing out, Domain 5, is worth 20. Put simply, 56 of the 80 marks come from conducting and finishing an audit.
| Domain | Questions | Marks | Domain minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Concepts and principles | 6 | 8 | 3 |
| 2. Audit concepts and auditor responsibilities | 6 | 8 | 3 |
| 3. Planning the audit | 6 | 8 | 3 |
| 4. Conducting the audit | 14 | 36 | 14 |
| 5. Reporting and closing out the audit | 8 | 20 | 8 |

Which ISO 14001 topics should you revise for the Lead Auditor exam?
The exam tests auditing, but you audit against the content of ISO 14001, so the environmental ideas must be second nature. Make sure you can explain each of these without looking them up:
- Environmental aspects and impacts: an aspect is the element of an activity, product or service that interacts with the environment, and an impact is the resulting change, adverse or beneficial.
- Compliance obligations: the legal requirements an organisation must meet, plus other requirements it has to or chooses to meet.
- Life cycle perspective: the stages from raw material acquisition to final disposal.
- Risks and opportunities: how planning turns them into objectives and actions.
- Operational control and emergency preparedness: what an auditor looks for in clause 8.
- Evaluation of compliance, internal audit and management review: the evidence in clause 9.
Then practise applying each one to a situation, because Domains 4 and 5 ask you to judge a scenario and choose what a lead auditor would do next. Our ISO 14001 beginners guide revisits the key terms.
How do you pace the ISO 14001 Lead Auditor exam?
CQI suggests a time for each domain: 10 minutes each for Domains 1 to 3, 45 minutes for Domain 4 and 30 minutes for Domain 5, which adds up to the 105 minutes of the paper. The scenario domains get about twice as long per question as the first three, because each answer takes more thought.
Use these habits on the day:
- Answer before you click Next. There is no going back, so commit to your best answer.
- Read twice, choose once. Multiple-response questions can hide marks in words like “all” or “two”.
- Use your notes as a safety net. The exam is open book, but searching the internet is not allowed.
- Take your one 10-minute break deliberately. Use the Take a break button, ideally before the scenario domains.
- Check the clock at each domain. If you are behind, speed up on the short domains rather than rushing Domain 4.
