ISO 45001 Lead Auditor Exam: A Calm Preparation Plan
Practical advice on revision, pacing and exam-day habits, with a quick tool that matches your biggest worry to a fix.
In this guide
Most people who fail a lead auditor exam do not lack knowledge. They run short of time, read a question too fast or leave a whole domain thin. The advice below is aimed at those habits, because they are fixable in a few weeks.
Quick answer
To pass the CQI IRCA ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam you need at least 40 of the 80 marks and the minimum in every domain. The exam is open book, has 40 questions and lasts 1 hour 45 minutes. Spend most of your revision on conducting the audit, which carries 36 marks, practise with the two mock exams, and keep your notes organised so you can find answers quickly.
How is the ISO 45001 Lead Auditor exam built?
| Domain | Marks | Questions | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Management system concepts and principles | 8 | 6 | 3 |
| Audit concepts and auditor responsibilities | 8 | 6 | 3 |
| Planning the audit | 8 | 6 | 3 |
| Conducting the audit | 36 | 14 | 14 |
| Reporting and closing the audit | 20 | 8 | 8 |
The exam is online and open book. Learners whose first language is not English get an extra 30 minutes. You should sit it within 30 days of the last class, and results can take up to 14 UK working days.
What should you do before the exam?
- Attend every session. The live exercises are where audit judgement is built, and they are hard to catch up on later.
- Speak up in class. Asking a question and hearing the answer fixes an idea better than reading it twice.
- Finish the activities and the quiz on time. They show which domains need extra attention.
- Weight your revision. Almost half the marks sit in one domain, so build most of your practice around it.
- Sit both mock exams. Do the first early under timed conditions and the second after you have revised your weak points.
- Index your notes. Tabs or headings let you find an answer in seconds, which matters in an open-book paper.

If you would like to learn this in a live class, our ISO 45001 Lead Auditor course covers it.
What helps on the day?
Read the instructions, then skim the whole paper before you write anything. Answer the questions you find easy first, so marks are banked early, and come back to the harder ones. For scenario questions, picture yourself as the auditor in that room and ask what evidence you would need. Write answers in your own words rather than copying from your notes. Keep an eye on the clock, and leave the last few minutes to check that every question has an answer.
Prepare your environment too: a quiet room, a stable connection, a charged device and only the materials the exam rules allow. Check the current rules on the ISO 45001 Lead Auditor course page, because possessing unauthorised items can count as malpractice. Submit the exam properly before you close the window.
What if you need another attempt?
A second attempt costs USD 35 (AED 125) and must be taken within one year. A third attempt requires you to re-attend the class, which is free within a year, and costs USD 85 (AED 310). Fees can change, so please check the ISO 45001 Lead Auditor course page. Our ISO 45001 Lead Auditor sample exam questions and course material pages give you more to practise with.
